Revista CEFAC , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-18462007000400010
Abstract: purpose: to check the occurrence of temporomandibular disorder in children from monte negro/ro, correlating the findings to the presence of harmful oral habits. methods: the study was conducted on 79 children aged form 6 to 11-year old (41 girls and 38 boys). the presence of temporomandibular disorder was investigated and classified into articular, muscular and mixed. the presence of harmful oral habits involving sucking (baby bottle, pacifier, finger/thumb sucking) and chewing (nail biting, biting objects, biting the oral or labial mucosa, bruxism and clenching) was also found. results: among the 79 investigated children, 27 (34.18%) showed symptoms of temporomandibular disorder, with highest periodicity of articular disorder (48.15%, n=13), followed by mixed (33.33%, n=9) and muscular disorder (18.52%, n=5). harmful oral habits were found in 69.62% (n=55), mostly involving chewing habits (39.91%, n=26) followed by sucking (8.86%, n=7); some children showed both types of habits (27.85%, n=22). the results did not demonstrate any association among harmful oral habits and temporomandibular disorder according to the chi-square test, regardless of the type of habit (chewing or suction). conclusion: one third of children evaluated (34%) presented symptoms of temporomandibular disorder, without any association between temporomandibular disorder and the presence of harmful oral habits.
An analysis of the degrees of persistence of inflation, inflation expectations and Real interest rate in Brazil
Silva, Cleomar Gomes da;Leme, Maria Carolina da Silva;
Revista Brasileira de Economia , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-71402011000300004
Abstract: this paper makes use of auto-regressive fractionally integrated (arfima) models, as well as unit root tests with structural breaks, to examine the ipca (the official inflation rate), inflation expectations, and the real interest rate in brazil. for the period ranging from july 1999 to december 2010 the results show that the brazilian inflation can be taken as stationary and mean-reverting, with some degree of persistence. as for inflation expectations, the non-stationarity detected in the fractional integration model is due to structural breaks, meaning that they can also be taken as stationary with mean-reversion. finally, the selic interest rate shows some sign of non-stationarity, which had already been found in the unit root tests. however, it cannot be characterized by a unit root of a pure form, but as a fractionally integrated process with some long memory.

Food and Nutrition Sciences (FNS) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/fns.2011.29138
Abstract: The aim of this study is to identify the adolescents’ knowledge and perceptions of healthy and unhealthy eating. It is a qualitative cross section study with 83 adolescents of both genders between 10 and 16 years old enrolled in a public school in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. The participants answered two discursive questions that assessed their knowledge and perception of their actual diet. These questions were later analyzed by a qualitative technique, “Discourse of Collective Subject” based on the Theory of Social Representations. Overall, the youth presented an adequate knowledge about healthy eating. About half (52.6%) reported a balanced and varied diet; and 56.3% considered their actual diet as being healthy. Adolescents’ knowledge about healthy eating isn’t the only determinant for their food choices; and so traditional nutritional interventions focusing on concepts about healthy eating should be modified, aiming at behavioral changes.

Abstract:

The digital images generated by remote sensors often contain noises that are inherent in the process of imaging and transmission. The application of digital processing techniques greatly enhances the ability to extract information on surface targets from remote sensing data. When digital images are used with high spatial resolution, one of the problems emerging the high variability of targets presents in such images. From the computational point of view, the use of partial differential equations is favored by the large number of numerical methods showed in the literature. Many of the models are considered non-complex both from the mathematical and computational standpoints, due to the characteristics of explicit equations. This work uses techniques of the partial differential equations (PDE) and mathematical morphology to extract cartographic features in digital images of the remote sensing. The selected study area corresponds to an image containing part of the Mário Covas Ring Road, located in the metropolitan region of Sao Paulo (SP), Brazil. The results are promising and show the high potential of using mathematical morphology in the field of cartography.
