Revista Brasileira de Ginecologia e Obstetrícia , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-72032006001000006
Abstract: purpose: to verify the existence of association between sub-fertility or infertility and concurrent celiac disease in women attended at a reproductive disorders out-patient clinic of a general hospital. methods: this was a case-control study in which a group of 200 women with difficulty in conceiving was compared with a control group with 400 women who were treated at the same hospital for various reasons, but not for fertility problems. both groups were submitted to the anti-endomysium antibody protocol using the indirect immunofluorescence method. whenever positive, the diagnosis was further confirmed by endoscopic duodenal biopsy and histopathological exams. results: anti-endomysium testing resulted positive in three patients (1.5%) within the group of women with difficulty in conceiving. diagnosis of celiac disease was subsequently confirmed by histopathological exams of the duodenal mucosa. all the control patients presented negative results in the serological exams. conclusion: celiac disease was observed only in women with difficulty in conceiving, a relevant fact indicating that this disease may be more common in infertile women. however, new studies with a greater sample size are needed to confirm this possible association.
The Influence of Organo-Clay Ratio in the HIPS-OMMT Nanocomposites Analyzed by Proton Spin-Lattice and Spin-Spin Relaxation Times  [PDF]

Materials Sciences and Applications (MSA) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/msa.2016.73015
Abstract: Spin-lattice and spin-spin relaxation times are one of the most attractive tools in the solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to evaluate the level of clay dispersion in the nanocomposite matrices. The efficiency of the relaxation processes can be used to evaluate the nanoparticles intermolecular interactions and, consequently, the dispersion of them in the polymer matrix, the molecular dynamic of the hybrid compounds, as well as the molecular domains formation in an organic material. The determination of relaxation parameters was carried out to evaluate the organoclay exfoliation and intercalation process in the polymeric matrix, in addition to their dispersion and distribution in the matrix. The proton NMR relaxation data showed that the polymeric nanomaterials investigated presented good intermolecular interaction that promoted good nanoparticles dispersion and distribution in the hybrid materials. The proportion of 2% clay promoted a greater heterogeneity in the matrix compared to other ratios; 1% clay influenced only to the higher molecular rigidity phase; and 3% clay had a decrease in heterogeneity compared to 2% though still influenced the matrix as a whole. These results prove the efficiency of NMR technique in the evaluation of nanofillers interaction with polymer matrices, as well as their dispersion and distribution.

Materials Sciences and Applications (MSA) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/msa.2018.95033
Abstract: In this study, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-based nanocomposites consisting of metallic oxide nanoparticles (TiO2, ZnO, ZrO2) were obtained from an aqueous solution of 7% PVA, in order to compare the microstructural, and physical properties of bionanocomposite films reinforced with various loading contents (0.1%, 0.2% and 0.3% w/w). They were evaluated regarding their molecular toughness through Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), regarding their chemical structural through Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), regarding their crystallinity throught X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and regarding termal properties through Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). The NMR results showed that the smallest concentrations of these oxides have a tendency to disperse better in the polymeric matrix, improving the structural toughness. Besides, changes in the termal resistance of the material were found with the use of TGA and DSC.
Polymer Nanocomposites Used as Scaffolds for Bone Tissue Regeneration  [PDF]
Raquel Couto de Azevedo Gon?alves Mota, Emerson Oliveira da Silva, Lívia Rodrigues de Menezes
Materials Sciences and Applications (MSA) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/msa.2018.98049
Abstract: Scaffolds are three-dimensional biocompatible structures that can mimic the properties of the extracellular matrix (ECM) of a given tissue, like mechanical support and bioactivity, which provides a platform for cellular adherence, proliferation and differentiation. Consequently, scaffolds are frequently used in tissue engineering with the intention of assisting the regeneration of a damaged tissue, and a major application in bone regeneration. An ideal scaffold needs to be biodegradable, biocompatible, and needs to match the biomechanical properties of bone. Polymers are widely used in this field because they fulfil the first two requirements. However, no polymeric material can achieve mechanical properties similar to the bone. For that reason, polymeric nanocomposites, which consist of ceramic/metallic nanoparticles dispersed in a polymer matrix, are being considered for bone scaffold fabrication in order to overcome this problem, since nanoparticles are known to improve composite mechanical strength, and enhance other properties.

Abstract: Objective: To evaluate the admission of children aged 0 to 5 years due to respiratory infections at a major hospital in the Southern region of the city of S o Paulo. Methods: A total of 4,240 clinical records of children hospitalized and diagnosed with pneumonia, bronchopneumonia, bronchiolitis and bronchitis were evaluated for the 2008-2009 period, based on age, gender and year season. Results: Out of this total of children aged 0 to 60-months, 139 (3.2%) presented with pneumonia, with a slight predominance in female babies, and 73.4% occurred between 12 and 60 months (102 cases), particularly during the winter. No significant difference was found as to gender in bronchopneumonia. Age range and year seasons showed to be significant. As regards to bronchiolitis, there was a slight increase in male babies (253 cases) aged less than 12 months and in the autumn season. A total of 182 (4.3%) presented with bronchitis, mainly boys (101 cases) in children aged 12 to 60 months, predominantly during autumn/summer seasons. Conclusion: The assessment of admissions of children aged 0 to 5 years due to respiratory infections at a major hospital at the Southern region of the city of S o Paulo, in the 2008-2009 period, showed that respiratory diseases affect age groups, and gender in a different way occurring in specific periods of the year.

Einstein (S?o Paulo) , 2012,
Abstract: Objective: To correlate the Apgar score, and neonatal mortality andits causes at a hospital located in the southern area of S o Paulo City. Methods: A retrospective study performed by analysis of medicalcharts (n=7,094) of all live newborns during the period of 2005 to2009, with data up to 28 days of life in reference to weight, Apgarscore, survival and cause of mortality. Cases were analyzed by theX2 test (p < 0.05). Results: In 7,094 births, there were 139 deaths,58.3% during the first week, and 3.6% of them with Apgar < 4 inthe 1st minute. A positive association was found between mortalityand this variable, with significantly declining values up to 2,000 gin weight. In the group with weight < 1,000 g, the association withApgar < 4 in the 1st minute with mortality was three-fold greaterthan in the 1,000-1,500 g weight group, and 35-fold greater than inthe ≥ 3,000 g group. Among newborns with Apgar 8-10, the rate ofmortality and low weight was two times greater than in those withweight > 2,499 g. Fetal distress and prematurity were associated withearly neonatal death; malformations and fetal distress to late mortality. The predictive value of death with Apgar < 4 varied, according to weight, from 62.74% in the < 1,000 g group to 5.5%, in the > 3,000 g group. Conclusions: The Apgar score proved linked to factors both epidemiological and related to attention given to the birth and neonatal mortality, and was associated with extremely low birth weight.
Sobre a amizade em tempos de solid?o
Gomes, Lívia Godinho Nery;Silva Junior, Nelson da;
Psicologia & Sociedade , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-71822007000200008
Abstract: this paper analyzes some results of a research that investigated the semantics on friendship and analyzed the political quality of the friendship. the objective of this article is to describe and to argue the implications of the decomposition of public bonds and the consequent destruction of political engagement. in the liquid scene of current times, individualization process and the weakening of social bonds configures the decomposition of public space and the consequent degradation of politics. the capitalist market when transforming human bonds and people into merchandise, has promoted the fragmentation of human solidarity and the abilities of sociability. in this research workers of a popular cooperative were interviewed on the histories of their friendships. the results of this research highlight that the bonds of friendship can form relations of shelter and commitment with the other, in which one lives the vigor of solidarity. on the other hand, the narratives of the citizens had also disclosed the contemporary fragility of social bonds, social isolation and individualism.
Implica??es políticas da semantica familialista nos discursos de amizade contemporaneos
Gomes, Lívia Godinho Nery;Silva Júnior, Nelson da;
Psicologia em Estudo , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-73722008000200009
Abstract: friendship semantics has been historically articulated to the concepts of equality and fraternity. it has been characterized by a familial semantics that associates friends to brothers. however, several authors show that familial semantics, based on intimacy and familiarity, privileges homogenization processes and suppression of otherness. in fact, it may foreground intolerable practices of debasement and discrimination of the other. current essay describes and discusses results of a research on friendship semantics in contemporary discourses. friendship?s familial semantics seems to be associated with fragility of bonds and with the depreciation of social skills which an encounter of the other requires.
Experimenta??o política da amizade: alteridade e solidariedade nas classes populares
Gomes, Lívia Godinho Nery;Silva Júnior, Nelson da;
Psicologia: Teoria e Pesquisa , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-37722007000200005
Abstract: to think about the experience of friendship as a space of experimentation which may bring about fixed forms of subjectivity and sociability, thus constituting a form of political resistance, represents an invitation to a state of otherness in an experimental relationship designated by the irreversible commitment with the other. this paper intends to describe and discuss some results of a research elaborated in a master?s dissertation project which investigated the semantics of friendship and the possibility of friendship turning into a space of political experimentation. trying to understand how friendship ties may constitute privileged forms of experimentation of other forms of relationship, incompatible with the individualist and excluding models of capitalism, the authors conducted several interviews with workers of popular cooperatives (an autonomous and non-hierarchical form of work-group organization) about their friendship histories. the results of this survey highlight that the solidarity ties that flourish among friends of the lower class working groups do not coincide with the neoliberal imperatives but rather resist against oppressive situation, revealing creative ways of facing unfair working conditions, thus contributing to revert them.

Jorge, Lívia Loamí Ruyz;Silva, Sueli Riul da;
Revista Latino-Americana de Enfermagem , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-11692010000500003
Abstract: this study aimed to evaluate the quality of life of female gynecological cancer patients submitted to antineoplastic chemotherapy between august 2007 and april 2009, 50 patients who were undergoing chemotherapy at an outpatient chemotherapy unit in uberaba - mg were interviewed, by applying the instrument of evaluation of quality of life of the world health organization, whoqol-bref. the results showed that the domain most affected was the physical and the more preserved, the social, with the mean of the general quality of life above the means obtained in other studies. all domains correlated significantly with the general quality of life. it was evident then that the quality of life of these women is satisfactory, however it is suggested that the domains with lower scores be the targets of more accurate observations during multi-professional interventions in order to provide a better quality of life during the chemotherapy treatment.
