Advances in Biological Chemistry (ABC) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/abc.2014.42021
Abstract: The phytochemical study of Uruguayan specimens of Allophylus edulis (Sapindaceae) yielded the isolation of various natural products being some of them reported for the first time in this species. Although most of them are ubiquitous in the plant kingdom, some revealed in this study to have anti insect properties. Two sesquiterpenes (6,7-Epoxicaryophyllene and spathulenol), two phytosterols (sitosterone and sitosterol), a pentacyclic triterpene (lupeol) and a clerodane diterpene were isolated. 6,7-Epoxycaryophyllene, lupeol and sitosterol showed to be deterrent against the aphid Myzus persicae and the coleopteran Epilachna paenulata. Moreover, the crude ethanolic extract of twigs of A. edulis showed to be deterrent against both insect species being some of its fractions also active against another aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi. Various active compounds against different insect models have been isolated from the twigs extract of A. edulis. The results evidenced synergic as well as antagonistic effects in the mixture, summed to differential activity against the insects, a desirable attribute when developing botanical pesticides.
Eruptive xanthomas and acute pancreatitis in a patient with hypertriglyceridemia

International Archives of Medicine , 2008, DOI: 10.1186/1755-7682-1-6
Abstract: This article is translated from Spanish, originally published in Archivos de Medicina. The original work is at doi:10.3823/001Severe hypertriglyceridemia, with higher levels than 2000 mg/dL, can cause the deposit of lipids in the dermis (eruptive xanthomas) and in the retina (lipemia retinalis). These symptoms are often described in medical literature, but their observation in clinical practice is rare [1]. Moreover, serum triglyceride levels above 1000 mg/dL are a well-known cause of acute pancreatitis, and in 50% of cases these are associated with mild hyperglycemia [2]. On the contrary, the onset of a diabetes mellitus can produce severe hypertriglyceridemia which develops severely if these lipids show an additional elevation of genetic origin [3]. The clinical case below describes a patient with hyperglycemic symptoms, sudden appearance of abdominal pain and yellowish papules [4].A 33-year-old male, with no history of hereditary dyslipidaemia or diabetes, obese, teetotal, was admitted to hospital with a clinical picture of acute pain in the left hypochondrium and vomiting. Furthermore, in the last 10 days he was presented with papular dermatosis and diabetic symptoms. Clinical exploration with deep pressure elicited pain in the upper part of the abdomen, but there were no peritonitis symptoms. Scattered white-yellowish papules burst on the lower limbs, buttocks and thorax (figure 1).Further observation revealed left deviation leukocytosis, a rise of C-reactive protein, glucosuria and ketonuria, hyperglycemia (310 mg/dL), an increase of serum amylase and lipase, extrahepatic cholestasis, and a notable elevation of triglycerides (2350 mg/dL). The axial high-resolution computerized tomography showed an edematous pancreas, in absence of necrosis foci, abscesses or hemorrhage, as well as liquid deposits in the pararenal region (figure 2).The skin biopsy showed dermic bursts of frothy cells, suggestive of a clinical diagnosis of eruptive xanthomatosis (figure 3).The p

Abstract: En un huerto de lechosa cv. Abstract: proper management of irrigation water provides an optimal balance. with this objective the water balance simulation model isareg was calibrated and validated for micro-sprinkler irrigated sweet pepper, garlic, onion, cabbage and carrots, using field observations performed in the irrigation station of alquízar, south of la havana. model calibration and validation were performed using two independent data sets for each crop. the calibration referred to the crop coefficients (kc) and the soil water depletion factor for no stress (p) and to the soil hydraulic properties of a red ferralitic compacted soil. the calibration procedure consisted of adjusting first the soil properties and then, through an iterative procedure, to determine the kc and p values that minimize the differences between observed and simulated soil water content along the crop season. the model validation was performed using the calibrated kc and p with a different climate and crop data sets. the following indicators of goodness of fitting were used to assess model calibration and validation: regression coefficient forced to the origin (b), determination coefficient (r2), root mean square error (rmse) and average absolute error (aae). results show a good agreement between field observations and model predictions, with b close to 1,0; r2 ranging 0,84-0,95 for the calibration and 0,78-0,90 for the validation for all the five crops. the rmse and aae are small. rmse ranged 0,97-2,08 mm for the calibration and 1,07 to 2,82 mm for the validation. the kc and p values are in the range suggested in fao 56. results allow to further use the isareg model to define alternative irrigation schedules and to generate those that may provide for improved water productivity in cuba.
