Abstract: this article offers a historical account of the political process behind the incorporation of today's statutory museums into the university of s?o paulo, providing support for ongoing discussions about the changes to the university's bylaws. it describes the steps leading to the integration of the museums into usp while considering the environment in which this process took place, with a special focus on the zoology museum. it identifies the main obstacles that have stood in the way of their full integration into the academic life of the university.

Abstract: stalk rot (colletotrichum graminicola) is one of the most serious disease affecting maize crop in brazil, especially after the flowering phase, when yield losses can reach significant levels. the use of genetically resistant cultivars is the most efficient strategy to control the disease. the aim of this work was to evaluate the incidence of stalk rot in maize commercial hybrids sinde there is scarce information to allow the use of genetic resistance as a strategy to control this disease. eighteen maize commercial hybrids were evaluated in 2005, 2006, and 2007 in the experimental area of embrapa maize and sorghum research center sete lagoas, minas gerais state, brazil, under conditions of natural infection. from each plot, three stalk segments of three plants were sampled: the second internode above the soil line, the internode of ear insertion, and the internode right bellow the tassel. four tissue fragments of each stalk segment were surface sterilized and transferred to oatmeal agar plates, which were incubated under continuous fluorescent light at 25oc. pathogen identification and quantification were performed after three to four days of incubation. the hybrids br201 and br206 showed the lowest infection level (below 30%) whereas the highest incidence (above 60%) was observed for the hybrid brs1010. the pathogen was observed in all analyzed stalk segments, but was most frequently isolated from the internode right below the tassel. no evaluated hybrid could be considered to have high resistance to the pathogen.
Mucocele de apêndice
Costa, Roberto Gibson Ferreira;
Revista do Colégio Brasileiro de Cirurgi?es , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-69912009000200018
Abstract: appendiceal mucocele is a rare entity characterized by a gross enlargement of the appendix from accumulation of mucoid substance within the lumen. it is encountered in only 0.1 - 0.4% of all appendicectomies with a female predominance (m/f: 1/4) and a mean age of more than 50 years at the time of presentation . because of that, appendiceal mucocele is often incidentally discovered either during surgery or on radiologic examination. a case of benign appendiceal mucocele is reported here, in a 49 years old male. the pathogenesis and the different surgical strategies are discussed.

Abstract: between november 1988 and april 1990, 75,637 phlebotomines were captured with the use of falc?o light traps on palmital farm in the north of paraná state, brazil. fifteen species were represented. the percentage of 95.8% of the insects were captured within the domiciliary area and the remaining 4.2% in the forest environment. the percentage of 62 were captured in one single falc?o light trap installed in a henhouse, where blancasmya migonei predominated. in all the other traps psychodopygus whilmani was predominant. b. migonei, p. whitmani, pintomyia pessoai, pintomyia fischeri and psychodopygus intermedius are highly significant vectors of american cutaneous leishmaniasis and represented 93.8% of all phlebotomines captured with 10 falc?o light traps. the monthly densities of these insects were obtained from one falc?o light trap installed in a henhouse and increased especially in the warmer and more humid months. in the forest environment the phlebotomines were captured principally in traps installed about 10 meters above the ground and p. whilmani, b. migonei, p. intermedius, brumptomyia brumpti, psychodopygus monticola and p. pessoai were the dominant species. the need for information about the epidemiology of american cutaneous leishmaniasis calls for further investigation with a view to clarifying the implications of the relationship between the phlebotomines and domestic animals in the leishmania cycle of transmission in domiciliary areas.

Revista de Saúde Pública , 1993, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89101993000300006
Abstract: in two years of phlebotomine captures in a modified forest an appreciable decrease in the size of this insect population has been observed when compared to previous data from the same locality. the captures with the shannon light trap were made in the outlying forest of palmital farm in terra boa county, parana state, brazil. the predominant species were lutzomyia withmani, lutzomyia migonei, lutzomyia intermedius e lutzomyia fischeri. these insects were active from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. and the period of greatest activity varied according to the species. these species' densities were higher in the summer and autum months. environmental modifications may have influenced the observed changes in phlebotomine behavior.

Abstract: during the period from september 1988 to april 1990, mosquitoes were captured using shannon light trap and falc?o light traps, in terra boa county, in the north of paraná state, brazil. the shannon trap was installed in the outlying modified forest and falc?o traps were installed in the modified forest and domiciliary areas. the prevalence of species was verified and the methods of capture compared.

Abstract: the study was developed in the fragment situated in the catende's-pe city (mata santa luzia - 8o72'49" s e 35o72'47" wat 142 km of the capital, with 239m altitude. the present work aims to study and evaluated the total natural regeneration of arboreal species in the forest fragment and to verify the diversity and structure of the species in the same one. for estimate the natural regeneration, were made systematically 20 subunits (samples with 5 x 5 m), with 50 meters between the ones. the regeneration study (cap < 15 cm) was developed with heights divided in three categories (1 - individuals with minimum heights 1 < 2 m; 2 - individuals with minimum heights 2 < 3 m; 3 - individuals with heights > 3 m). - individuals with heights > 3 m). in fragment was observed 25 botanical families and 36 arboreal táxons inside 107 individuals. 33 had been identified in level of species, 2 in sort level and 1 are not identify. five species obtained bigest values for total natural regeneration of the samples population (rnt) was descript following way: rheedia gardneriana planch. & triana (9,9%), cupania racemosa (vell.) radlk (7,7%), brosimum discolor schott (7,4%), vismia guianensis (aubl.) pers. (6,1%), protium heptaphyllum (aubl.) marchand (5,9%). these species probably they will be main responsible for the maintenance of forest's structure and physiognomy.
