Revista do Hospital das Clínicas , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0041-87811999000300004
Abstract: rheumatic fever is still the most commonly seen rheumatic disease in brazilian pediatric rheumatology clinics. it remains a significant health problem since subsequent cardiac sequelae represent one of the most important causes of chronic heart disease in children. we reviewed the clinical manifestations of rheumatic fever in 786 patients, followed at seven pediatric rheumatology clinics in the state of s?o paulo, brazil. all patients were diagnosed according to revised jones' criteria. regarding major criteria, 396 (50.4%) children exhibited carditis, 453 (57.6%) polyarthritis, 274 (34.8%) chorea, 13 (1.6%) erythema marginatum, and 12 (1.5%) subcutaneous nodules. valvular lesions documented by echocardiography in the absence of accompanying auscultatory findings were found in 144 (18.3%) patients. migratory polyarthritis was observed in 290 (64.0%) patients with articular involvement. documented previous streptococcal infection assessed by serum antistreptolysin (aso) titers occurred in 531 (67.5%) patients. even though prophylaxis with benzathine penicillin was recommended to all patients, recurrent attacks were observed in 147 (18.7%). we emphasize the high frequency of chorea, silent carditis and recurrences in our series as well as the variable clinical presentation of arthritis in rheumatic fever. multicenter studies should be encouraged to improve our understanding of the clinical features of rheumatic diseases in children and adolescents.

Experimental Study of Stockpiles of Iron Ore Fines  [PDF]
Evandro Moraes da Gama, Matheus Henrique de Castro, Carlos Gomes, Felipe Abbas da Gama
Geomaterials (GM) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/gm.2014.41003
Abstract:

Storage of iron ore pellet feed fines (with 90% minimum granulometry of <45 μm and 100% <150 micron) can be studied through the mechanics of granular materials. Geotechnical inputs are not able to explain the failure phenomenon comprehensively. Yet, in the industry the trend is to work with geotechnical inputs and an exaggerated degree of visual interpretation. The first part of this article briefly shows some articles in which authors emphasize the mechanics of granular materials and an article placing emphasis on the geotechnical features of granular materials. The second part shows the solution to the equation developed by [1] applied to the geometry of iron ore storage piles. The scale model study of stress variation on the model’s axis is done and the comparison of the stress variation and Thamwattana’s analytical resolution is commented. The third part shows a stress distribution study formulating centered finite differences by applying the Itasca Consulting Group’s PFC2D software to the iron ore stockpile within the same footprint as the stockpile in the analytical model. This study’s conclusions are as follows: 1) The differential between the models is the differences between tangential and normal rigidity. These differences between tangential rigidity Kt and normal rigidity Kn make the stockpile unstable. We can state that when Kn = Kt the stockpiles are more stable. 2) The models and all the work done show that the stockpiles are not stable. The stockpiles are at times temporarily stable, but even after formation, these stockpiles are unstable and the particles are always moving.

Circumstantial Indications Emitted by the Teacher during Discursive Activity  [PDF]
Carlos Eduardo Laburú, Osmar Henrique Moura da Silva, Marcelo Alves Barros, Andreia de Freitas Z?mpero
Creative Education (CE) , 2017, DOI: 10.4236/ce.2017.88095
Abstract:
This study makes use of a reading of Prieto’s semiotics with the aim of shedding light on semiotic elements that occur during the discursive process in the classroom. Taking as reference an overview of this author’s theories in the context of science education, the paper focuses on the semiotic element of circumstantial indications. Circumstantial indications are a collateral and not always explicit type of sign in the teacher’s communication that assist the meaning of messages conveyed by signals. Compared with indications, signals are signs transmitted explicitly and openly that constitute the main axis of the discourse. In the course of classroom communication, teachers emit circumstantial indications in parallel with the transmitted signals. The signals refine the understanding of the messages of the scientific concepts being taught in order to make them more meaningful. This study investigates one Physics teacher’s class in a lab in which an empirical activity is guided at various moments through discursive activity based on problem-solving methodology. The paper identifies and qualifies some types of circumstantial indications emitted by the teacher, contextualizing their role in the discursive process during teaching.
Characteristics of the CsI:Tl Scintillator Crystal for X-Ray Imaging Applications  [PDF]

Materials Sciences and Applications (MSA) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/msa.2018.92018
Abstract: Scintillators are high-density luminescent materials that convert X-rays to visible light. Thallium doped cesium iodide (CsI:Tl) scintillation materials are widely used as converters for X-rays into visible light, with very high conversion efficiency of 64.000 optical photons/MeV. CsI:Tl crystals are commercially available, but, the possibility of developing these crystals into different geometric shapes, meeting the need for coupling the photosensor and reducing cost, makes this material very attractive for scientific research. The objective of this work was to study the feasibility of using radiation sensors, scintillators type, developed for use in imaging systems for X-rays. In this paper, the CsI:Tl scintillator crystal with nominal concentration of the 10-3 M was grown by the vertical Bridgman technique. The imaging performance of CsI:Tl scintillator was studied as a function of the design type and thickness, since it interferes with the light scattering and, hence, the detection efficiency plus final image resolution. The result of the diffraction X-ray analysis in the grown crystals was consistent with the pattern of a face-centered cubic (fcc) crystal structure. Slices 25 × 2 × 3 mm3 (length, thickness, height) of the crystal and mini crystals of 1 × 2 × 3 mm3 (length, thickness, height) were used for comparison in the imaging systems for X-rays. With these crystals scintillators, images of undesirable elements, such as metals in food packaging, were obtained. One-dimensional array of photodiodes and the photosensor CCD (Coupled Charge Device) component were used. In order to determine the ideal thickness of the slices of the scintillator crystal CsI:Tl, Monte Carlo method was used.

Ciência & Educa??o (Bauru) , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-73132011000300013
Abstract: this work gives continuity to the existent reflections in the literature of scientific education area that suport considerations about the function carried out by the didactic laboratory in the science teaching. when placing didactic laboratory in a semiotic perspective, based on the referential of the multi-modal representations, it is defended the importance of that space in the school for appropriation, consolidation and improvement of the scientific concepts. the experimental action on and with the objects of the natural world and implicated instrumentation it is here pondered as a representational modal that should compose the multi-modal representations spectrum in teaching with the objective to making the speech and scientific ideas integrated and significant.
