Ferra, Janine de Campos;Cieslak, Silvia;Sartori Filho, Roberto;McManus, Connie;Martins, Carlos Frederico;Sereno, José Robson Bezerra;
Revista Brasileira de Zootecnia , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-35982010000100018
Abstract: the objective of this study was to identify and to correlate parameters that characterize puberty and estimate the age and weight of suffolk ewe lambs in mato grosso do sul. this study was carried out with twenty-two suffolk ewe lambs for 256 days. blood samples were collected from the jugular vein and centrifugated and the plasma were stored at -20°c until analysis of progesterone (p4) concentration by radioimmunoassay (ria). the morphometric measurements included: head length and width, body length, elbow height, chest perimeter, back-sternal diameter, croup length, width and height, cannon bone perimeter and shoulder and hip width, using a tape. the animals became pubertal when the plasma progesterone concentration was >1.0 ng/ml, at 34.1 ± 5.2 kg and 39.5 ± 8.5 weeks of age. meanwhile, the lambs that did not reach puberty (37.7 ± 11.4 weeks of age) were lighter. the morphometric measurements has medium to low correlations with age and weight at puberty.

Abstract: the objective of this study was to evaluate the morphological and functional characteristics of bovine spermatozoa retrieved from chilled epidydimides for long periods and cryopreserved. bovine testicles were collected in abattoir, transported to the laboratory and stored at 5°c for 0, 24, 48h e 72 hours (n=10 for each storage time treatment group). the spermatozoa were retrieved from each epidydimides, evaluated and diluted in tris-egg yolk-glycerol 7% medium and cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen. the morphological and functional characteristics of the spermatozoa were analyzed in vitro, by microscopic evaluation and in vivo, using artificial insemination. morphological alterations as sperm immaturity and motility reduction decreased after 72h of epididymides refrigeration and after thaw sperm were observed. the membrane and acrosome integrity were only affected in g48 and g72 groups after cryopreservation. however, the sperm capacity of fertilization post-cryopreservation was sufficient to promote two pregnancies and birth of healthy calves from g24 h and g72h groups. these results indicated that recovery and cryopreservation of chilled epididymal sperm until 72h from dead animals is a viable option to preserve male gametes to compose a germplasm bank.
Complexidade e dialética: contribui??es à práxis política e emancipatória em educa??o ambiental
Loureiro, Carlos Frederico Bernardo;
Educa??o & Sociedade , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-73302005000400020
Abstract: this paper analyses the main theoretical and methodological approaches to environmental education from a critical perspective within the historical dialectics. it problematizes the functional and organic formulations, produced in the field of theory of systems, and the holistic vision that dilute the political, social and cultural aspects inherent to the environmental complexity, establish an abstract unity among nature and society and, in some of its propositions, segregate the whole in relation to the parts. in the end, the relevant categories that define the emancipatory or transformative views of environmental education are brought forward in an approach that emphasizes citizenship participation, the re-signification of the environment, and the social transformation as structuring principles bound to the process of re-qualification of the human in the nature.
Crítica ao fetichismo da individualidade e aos dualismos na educa??o ambiental
Loureiro, Carlos Frederico B.;
Educar em Revista , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-40602006000100004
Abstract: in this article we establish the critic made to two recurrent categories in environmental education, in practical and discursive terms: the fetichism of individuality and the dualism school-society, speech-work. in the context of a theoretical reference from the emancipating dialectic tradition, we question the limits and the pedagogical implications of these categories in practicing environmental education. in this way, we draw attention to the necessity of deeper considerations and more debates of some non-historical and non-dialectic points of view, eventhough sometimes related, in face of the challenges and objectives that environmental educators historically deals with. at last, we reaffirm the relevance of marx's dialectical method, when the objective is the construction of an environmental education established in understanding the reality in its complexity and context, and focused in excelling the social relations that were established in capitalism as a way to solidify a new level of the society in the nature.
Um sistema para apoio à forma??o de empresas virtuais baseada em recursos de ch?o-de-fábrica
Bremer, Carlos Frederico;
Gest?o & Produ??o , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-530X1999000200001
Abstract: the agility to exploit new business opportunities is key to success for an enterprise to keep its competitiveness. the information technology advances, such as the internet, allow enterprises to work together effectively even if they are geographically separated. these technologies facilitate new forms of cooperation, like virtual enterprises. this paper describes the vishof, virtual shop floor system, that enables enterprises to share their shop floor resources to form virtual enterprises. this system is a piece of software for which access and operation is made via the internet with a browser.
A nova grande promessa da inova??o em fármacos: RNA interferência saindo do laboratório para a clínica
Menck, Carlos Frederico Martins;
Estudos Avan?ados , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-40142010000300007
Abstract: the discovery of gene silencing mechanisms in our own cells using rna interference is very recent. however, in less than a decade, the scientific investigation have progressed enough to make us see that, very soon, we will use this knowledge for therapeutic purposes. rna duplexes are potential pharmaceutical drugs and there are high investments in this new strategy. the promising gene therapy seems to finally reach maturity with these new tools.
Body size, female reproduction and sexual dimorphism in the lizard Ameiva ameiva (Teiidae) in a restinga of southeastern Brazil
Rocha, Carlos Frederico Duarte;
Revista Brasileira de Zoologia , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-81752008000200024
Abstract: in this study 57 specimens of the lizard ameiva ameiva (linnaeus, 1758) collected in the restinga at barra de maricá, in the state of rio de janeiro, southeastern brazil, were analyzed to investigate size relations and reproduction (in females) and sexual dimorphism of this population. we answered the following questions: 1) what is the minimum reproductive body size in females? 2) what is the average clutch size and 3) how is clutch size related to body size? 4) are body and head sizes sexually dimorphic? mean clutch size was 6.7 ± 2.1 eggs and was positively correlated with female body size. sexual dimorphism favoring males was found: adult mean snout-vent length was great in males (124.2 ± 17.8 mm) than females (96.5 ± 23.1 mm svl), and males were larger with respect to head width and length, and body mass. thus, despite the marked seasonality at barra de maricá, a. ameiva has an extended reproductive period. also, intrasexual selection may have acted on females to produce larger clutches, and on males, favoring larger males.

Abstract: We study existence and uniqeness of the nonlinear wave equation ¢ 2u ¢ t2+M(x, ¢ | ¢ u(x,t)|2dx+ ¢ |u(x,t)|2dx)( ¢ ’ ”u+u)=0in unbounded domains. The above model describes nonlinear wave phenomenon in non-homogeneous media. Our techniques ivolve fixed point arguments combined with the energy method.
Ultrassonografia em portadores de artrite reumatoide: o que o reumatologista clínico deve saber Ultrasonography in rheumatoid arthritis: what rheumatologists should know
Carlos Frederico Arend
Ultrasonography has recently gained prestige as an adjuvant method for the diagnosis and therapeutic follow-up of rheumatoid arthritis, although radiography remains the imaging modality traditionally and widely used for those purposes. The great advantage of the ultrasonographic study, which has motivated enthusiastic research in the area, resides in its capacity to detect synovitis and bone erosion at a pre-radiographic phase, which has been increasingly valued in preventing late and definitive structural damage. Because that is a relatively new subject, several scientific articles have been published in recent years about the potential applications of ultrasonography in individuals with rheumatoid arthritis, some of which directed to researchers and others to clinical rheumatologists. This study aimed at assessing the currently available bibliography on the subject and at describing only the concepts that are of practical applicability in the daily routine of clinical rheumatologists.
