Monetary policy, default risk and the exchange rate
Gon?alves, Carlos Eduardo;Guimares, Bernardo;
Revista Brasileira de Economia , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-71402011000100003
Abstract: in a country with high probability of default, higher interest rates may render the currency less attractive if sovereign default is costly. this paper develops that intuition in a simple model and estimates the effect of changes in interest rates on the exchange rate in brazil using data from the dates surrounding the monetary policy committee meetings and the methodology of identification through heteroskedasticity. indeed, we find that unexpected increases in interest rates tend to lead the brazilian currency to depreciate.

Open Journal of Anesthesiology (OJAnes) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ojanes.2014.49029
Abstract: In rare cases, rocuronium has been associated with dose-related tachycardia, probably by a cardiac muscarinic M2 receptor blockade mechanism. We report the case of a 30-year-old female who underwent excision of a branchial cyst under general anesthesia. This patient presented an episode of sinus tachycardia (130 bpm) shortly after anesthesia induction with propofol, sufentanyl, and rocuronium. Tachycardia could not be explained by any cause other than the use of rocuronium, which was reverted with sugammadex. Two minutes after sugammadex administration, heart rate normalized, corroborating our hypothesis that rocuronium induced the sinus tachycardia observed in our patient. The patient recovered well from the anesthetic-surgical procedure and showed no further cardiovascular, ventilatory, or neurological changes, being transferred to the post-anesthesia care unit, and finally discharged to the ward.

Geologia USP : Série Científica , 2012,
Abstract: A small and poorly diversified bivalve fauna from Taciba Formation, Itararé Group, Paraná Basin (State of Santa Catarina,Mafra Municipality), is described in this paper for the first time, based on new findings. The fauna is recorded in a 30 cmthick interval of fine sandstone locally at the top of Taciba Formation, in the Butiá quarry. The studied fossil-bearing sandstonebed is a marine intercalation recording a brief eustatic rise in sea-level, probably following glacier retreat and climateamelioration at the end of a broad glacial scenario. The fauna is mainly dominated by productid brachiopods, which are notdescribed here, and rare mollusk shells (bivalves and gastropods). Two bivalve species were identified: Myonia argentinensis(Harrington, 1955), and Aviculopecten multiscalptus (Thomas, 1928). The presence of Myonia argentinensis is noteworthysince this species is also present in the Baitaca assemblage found in marine siltstones (Baitaca assemblage) of theRio do Sul Formation, cropping out at the Teixeira Soares region, Paraná State. This species is also recorded in the bivalvefauna from the Bonete Formation, Pillahinco Group, Sauce Grande Basin, Buenos Aires Province, in Argentina. Hence, themarine bivalves of the Taciba Formation are associated with the transgressive event that characterizes the Eurydesma fauna,indicating a Late Asselian-Sakmarian age for the bivalve fauna. Presence of the Myonia argentinensis megadesmid speciesreinforces the Gondwanic nature of the studied fauna.

Mielke, Olaf Hermann Hendrik;Emery, Eduardo de Oliveira;Pinheiro, Carlos Eduardo Guimares;
Revista Brasileira de Entomologia , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0085-56262008000200008
Abstract: an updated list containing 335 species of skippers (hesperiidae) found in the distrito federal (central brazil), including data obtained from the literature, from several entomological collections, and from collecting of the authors, is presented. species with presumed distribution in the region are not included. it is presented too, a supplementary list with 32 endemic species occuring in the cerrado vegetation, from which 27 were found in the distrito federal.
Análise dos transientes da fluorescência da clorofila a de plantas jovens de Carapa guianensis e de Dipteryx odorata submetidas a dois ambientes de luz
Gon?alves, José Francisco de Carvalho;Silva, Carlos Eduardo;Guimares, Diogo Gato;Bernardes, Regiane Sablina;
Acta Amazonica , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0044-59672010000100012
Abstract: tropical tree species are almost always under high irradiance in the amazonian. the high energy flux can be decisive for the success or not in the initial establishment in the field. the objective of this study was to investigate the answers of young plants of andiroba (carapa guianensis aubl) and cumaru (dipteryx odorata (aublet) willd) exposed to two light environments (shade and sunlight). the experiment was carried in manaus-am, brazil (3o8's, 59o52'w). analysis of chlorophyll a fluorescence transients were obtained in intact and healthy leaves between 10:00 to 12:00 am. the curve ojip indicated that the species high irradiance exposed presented photoinhibition after 45 days of experiment. andiroba and cumaru plants exposed to sunlight exhibited low values of tro/abs (7.17 and 20.4%, respectively), eto/tro (14.5 and 27.2%, respectively) and eto/abs (20.6 and 42.2%, respectively) and high values of dio/abs (26.9 and 43.0%, respectively), compared with plants exposed to the shadow with 45 days of experiment. as for phenomenological flux, most of the parameters, low values were observed for both exposed species in the sunlight. andiroba and cumaru plants exposed in the sunlight exhibited low values of piabs (63.3 and 78.7%, respectively) compared with exposed plants to the shadow at the end of the experiment. although the species have suffered with the stress for high irradiance andiroba specie presented better performance than cumaru being indicated for use in production planting or degraded area restoration.
Biology of Chirocentrodon bleekerianus (Poey, 1867) (Clupeiformes: Pristigasteridae) in a continental shelf region of southern Brazil
Corrêa, Carlos Eduardo;Chaves, Paulo de Tarso;Guimares, Paulo Ricardo Bittencourt;
Brazilian Archives of Biology and Technology , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-89132005000300013
Abstract: this study provides information on the biology of c. bleekerianus from paraná state coast, brazil, assembling data about its abundance, size structure, diet and reproduction. monthly collections were accomplished in 1999 and 2000 in the internal continental shelf, with trawl net. the catch-per-unit-effort did not vary significantly among the seasons. in the summer, the individuals were larger, followed by autumn, spring and winter. c. bleekerianus was predominantly planktivorous and the most frequent items in its diet were copepods followed by diatomaceous algae. seasonal variation in the frequency values of the gonad maturation stages, gonadossomatic index and gonadal condition factor indicated that the reproductive period encompassed spring and summer. the mean total length at first maturity of females was estimated to be 76 mm.
Fotossíntese e potencial hídrico foliar de plantas jovens de andiroba submetidas à deficiência hídrica e à reidrata??o
Gon?alves, José Francisco de Carvalho;Silva, Carlos Eduardo Moura da;Guimares, Diogo Gato;
Pesquisa Agropecuária Brasileira , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-204X2009000100002
Abstract: the objective of this work was to investigate the photosynthetic performance of young andiroba plants (carapa guianensis) submitted to water stress and rewetting. the plants were irrigated daily in greenhouse conditions for 15 days. after acclimatization, the plants were separated randomly in two treatments, irrigated and non-irrigated plants. when the photosynthesis of the non-irrigated plants reached values close to zero, the plants were rewetted. measurements of gas exchanges and chlorophyll a fluorescence were recorded on seven-day intervals, during 21 days. plant water potentials were determined at the beginning and at the end of the experiment. net photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, and transpiration rates were reduced by 88, 89, and 89%, respectively, after 21 days of water stress. in relation to chlorophyll a, fluorescence variables were reduced 27 to 58%. the plant water potential was reduced more than four times by 21 days of stress. with rewetting, seedlings recovered their photosynthetic characteristics in four to eight days as well as their water potential, indicating that young andiroba plants exhibited high physiological plasticity to water stress.
