Advances in Computed Tomography (ACT) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/act.2014.31002
Abstract:

Considered rare tumors, gangliogliomas account for 0.4% - 0.9% of intracranial neoplasms. The peak of its incidence occurs between 10 and 20 years of age. These tumors are composed of glial and ganglion cells and they are relatively low-grade neoplasms associated with good prognoses. We report a case of an atypical calcified ganglioglioma in an 18-year-old woman with history of four months of stabbing right-sided parietal headache, paroxysmal. On image studies were noted the presence of thick wall calcification in gangliogliomas. Although rare, this atypical ganglioglioma should be included in the differential diagnosis of lesions occurring in this area of the brain.

IDENTIFICA O DE ARRANJOS PRODUTIVOS LOCAIS: O CASO DO ARRANJO PRODUTIVO LOCAL DO áLCOOL DE PIRACICABA

Gest?o & Regionalidade , 2010,
Traumatic subdural hygroma: five cases with changed density and spontaneous resolution

Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2007000100015
Abstract: thirty-four consecutive adult patients with subdural traumatic hygroma were analysed for clinical evolution, serial computed tomography scan (ct), and magnetic resonance imaging (mri) over a period of several months. five of the patients presented ct scan and mri evolution data showing increasing density over a period of 11 days to 6 months post trauma. in these five patients, final clinical and ct scan data were benign, with complete spontaneous resolution. descriptions in literature of evolving traumatic subdural hygroma have presented ct scan density modifications changing into chronic subdural hematoma. our patients show another possibility, density transformation, which sometimes show as subdural hematoma in ct scan and mri, but with final evolution where clinical condition and ct scan return to normal.

Abstract: zinc is an oligoelement involved in several organic reactions and it has been recognized as an essential component in the synthesis of proteins and as a probable factor in the stabilization of cell membranes. in the cochlea it is considered to be the principal protective component against reactive oxygen species, and it also acts as a synaptic modulator in some glutamatergic systems. its participation in synapses in the auditory system and in the treatment of tinnitus has been largely studied in the past few years. aim: the objective of the present study was to investigate the serum zinc levels in patients with tinnitus, before and after the treatment with drugs containing zinc, and to compare them with a control group. study design: clinical prospective. patients and method: we evaluated 41 patients (22 with tinnitus and 19 control) that were split into two groups (i and ii), respectively. both groups were submitted to audiologic evaluation, metabolic and biochemical exams, including determination of the serum zinc levels in order to attend the criterion of approval or not. the patients were treated with drugs containing zinc for 90 days, and after that they were submitted to exams to determinate the serum zinc levels again. results: in terms of serum zinc levels, the relationship between the group with tinnitus and the control group was not statistically significant, but the treatment significantly increased the serum zinc levels in the group with tinnitus, making it closer to the control group. 45,5% of the patients treated with zinc presented a reduction in their tinnitus. conclusion: patients with tinnitus and normal population did not present different serum zinc levels in this study.
Field spatial and temporal patterns of soil water content and bulk density changes

Scientia Agricola , 2006,
Abstract: Soil water content (theta) and bulk density (rhos) greatly influence important soil and plant processes, such as water movement, soil compaction, soil aeration, and plant root system development. Spatial and temporal variability of theta and rhos during different periods of the year and different phases of crops are of fundamental interest. This work involves the characterization of spatial and temporal patterns of theta and rhos during different climatic periods of year, aiming to verify whether there are significant temporal changes in rhos at the soil surface layer when submitted to wetting and drying cycles. The field experiment was carried out in a coffee plantation, Rhodic Kandiudalf soil, clayey texture. Using a neutron/gamma surface probe, theta and rhos were measured meter by meter along a 200 m spatial transect, along an interrow contour line. During the wet period there was no difference of spatial patterns of theta while during the dry period differences were observed, and can be associated to precipitation events. It was also observed that there are rhos temporal changes at the soil surface along the studied period as a consequence of the in situ wetting and drying cycles.

Repetitive elements in parasitic protozoa
Christine Clayton
BMC Biology , 2010, DOI: 10.1186/1741-7007-8-64
Abstract: See research article http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2164/11/321 webciteThe genomes of eukaryotes contain numerous types of repetitive element with a wide variety of functions. Some are within coding regions; others are in untranslated regions of mRNAs or are located in regions that are important for chromosome maintenance; and many may have no function at all beyond self-perpetuation. Repetitive elements fall into three broad classes. Simple repeats can change in copy number, but do not move to new locations; DNA 'cut-and-paste' transposons are able to 'jump' to a new location; and retroposons move via an RNA intermediate, leaving an intact retroposon at the original location. Changes in the numbers, or locations, of repetitive elements can alter the structures of proteins, influence gene expression and affect chromosome segregation and karyotypes. Repetitive elements are therefore significant drivers of diversity. There is currently little direct evidence for active transposition of the elements present in the genomes of parasitic protists but a genome-wide bioinformatic screen of the sequenced genome of the gut parasite Entamoeba histolytica published recently in BMC Genomics by Huntley et al. [1] has found indirect evidence of recent transposition events involving the SINE (short interspersed nuclear element) class of retroposon. The numbers of simple repeats and transposons in the genomes of parasitic protists vary considerably, with estimates of the proportion of repetitive DNA in genomes varying from 11% to 65%. These numbers are unreliable, however, as repetitive regions usually become compressed during alignment, and sequences present in multiple locations cause difficulties in assembly of contiguous chromosomes. Within species, variations between isolates in the numbers of simple repeats, and in the locations of transposable elements, are useful for epidemiological studies. Multicopy sequences are also ideal targets for amplification-based diagnostics.Simp
Guerra-Peixe: da trilha sonora do filme O diabo mora no sangue ao Prelúdio no 2 para viol?o

Abstract: the present text presents our conclusions on examining guitar player nélio rodrigues's statement that prelude no. 2 for guitar (1970) by césar guerra-peixe was "idealized" from the soundratck of the film o diabo mora no sangue (1967, the devil dwells in the blood), by cecil albery thiré. after discussing general questions relating the score of the five preludes for guitar published in 1973, we compare the characteristics of prelude no. 2 not only to the resources previously used by guerra-peixe in the music composed for the mentioned film but also to those used in the duos for song and guitar nesta manh? (this morning); resta, sim, é remover (it will have to be removed); and m?e d'água (1969).
A Curious Mistake Concerning Cranial Sutures in Aristotle's Parts of Animals, or, the Use and Abuse of the Footnote
Barbara Clayton
Glossator : Practice and Theory of the Commentary , 2010,
Abstract: This article examines an erroneous claim Aristotle makes in Parts of Animals about the number of cranial sutures in men and women, in the context of a discussion of this mistake by Robert Mayhew in his study, The Female in Aristotle’s Biology. By subjecting both Mayhew’s use of existing commentary on this passage and the references in his corresponding footnote to a literary analysis, the author explores the potential for play in the footnote, and its ability to destabilize the very argument it is intended to support.
Análise de Desempenho de Small Caps no Mercado de A es Brasileiro: Forma o de Carteiras ótimas
Clayton Drumond
