Evaluation of the effect of hyoscine-N-butyl bromide on the cardiovascular actions of detomidine in the horse
VALAD?O, Carlos Augusto Araújo;TEIXEIRA NETO, Francisco José;MARQUES, José Ant?nio;
Brazilian Journal of Veterinary Research and Animal Science , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-95962000000500011
Abstract: twenty one adult horses, males and females, were pretreated with 0.14 mg/kg of hyoscine-n-butylbromide intravenously and injected 5 minutes later with 0.02 mg/kg, iv of detomidine (group a, n = 9) or saline (group b, n = 12). mean arterial pressure measurements and electrocardiography were performed during 65 minutes. after hyoscine injection the heart rate was increased by 43% and 65% in a and b groups, respectively. heart rate remained increased after injection of detomidine, returning to baseline values after 15 minutes. no increase in the mean arterial pressure (map) was noticed after hyoscine but the map was increased by 62% after detomidine, returning to basal measurements until the end of observation time. no additional increase was noted in the group b horses. hyoscine shortened pr and qt intervals in both groups, but after detomidine, pr and qt intervals enlarged significantly at the end of the experiment. the second degree atrioventricular block occurred in 3 horses after 40 minutes only in group b. it was concluded that hyoscine prevented detomidine induced bradycardia and may be an useful drug combination against the bradycardia induced by this alpha-2 agonist, in horses.
Avalia??o da associa??o midazolam/droperidol na tranqüiliza??o de suínos
Marques, José Antonio;Valad?o, Carlos Augusto Araújo;Teixeira Neto, Francisco José;
Ciência Rural , 1995, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-84781995000200012
Abstract: the association midazolam/droperidol was evaluated in the chemical restraint of 11 landrace swines. cardiac and respiratory rates were studied as well as rectal temperature and blood gas analisis after and before the midazolam (0.4mg/kg)/droperidol (0.4mg/kg) injection. the parametrical values and the blood gas analisis were performed during an hour period after drug administration, at 10 minutes intervals. at the same time, clinical trials were performed about the effectiveness of the tranquilization. significant changes did not occur in the heart rate and acid-basic equilibrium. the respiratory rate decreased significantly, when compared to basal measurements. the set time of the drug action was that of 60 minutes, with an onset period of 3 minutes. during the tranquilization it was observed muscle relief, loss of the postural reflexos, abscence to enviromental stimulus and keeping of the pain reflex. the analysis of the obtained results enables to indicate the midazolam/droperidol association for the tranquilization of swines.
Tricobezoares no est?mago, duodeno e íleo
Rodrigues, Fransber Rondinelle Araújo;Cruz, Carlos Augusto Teixeira;Vianna, André Luiz;
Revista do Colégio Brasileiro de Cirurgi?es , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-69912000000200011
Abstract: a 21-year-old girl presents with a 15-day history of epigastric pain and vomiting. ten days later, constipation and abdominal distension followed. the patient reported similar epigastric pain and vomiting for 6 days last year. a painless epigastric 12-by-8-centimeter tumor was observed on abdominal palpation, and rectal examination revealed an extrinsic tumor compressing anterior rectal wall. upper digestive endoscopy showed a trichobezoar. upon laparotomy, one gastric and one duodenal trichobezoar were removed through an anterior gastrotomy. another one was found 40 centimeters proximal to the ileo-cecal valve and removed through a proximal ileotomy. trichobezoar is an unspecific disease, which diagnosis is made upon suspicion. early recognition of bezoars is important because morbidity and mortality rise considerably once complications occur. we illustrate this case to emphasize the need for early recognition and surgical management in order to reduce morbimortality.

Abstract: this article presents the central concepts of the multiple case study "health promotion in primary care" conducted by nescon-ufmg in 2005. teams of the family health program developed twelve health promotion experiences in different brazilian regions. after a conceptual revision and field research, health promotion was defined as the process of improving the health of people independently of any previous disease or injury, helping them to increase control over their health. we also concluded that an increased autonomy, understood as the capacity and possibility of the persons to choose, is the central category and criterion for defining health promotion practices.

Abstract: the objective of this study was to evaluate the aflatoxins effects on the growth of jundiá fingerlings (rhamdia quelen), and its deposition on the tissue of fishes fed with diets containing different concentrations of the micotoxin. a total of 960 fingerlings were used in two experiments, the first with 45 days, and the second with 35 days. the experimental facilities were composed by a thermoregulated water reused system. in the first experiment, concentrations of 41, 90 and 204 ppb of aflatoxins kg-1 were tested. in the second experiment, 350, 757 and 1,177 ppb aflatoxins kg-1 were also evaluated. the following parameters were estimated: weight, total and standard length, dressing carcass, condition factor, weight gain, survival and aflatoxin deposition in the liver and carcass. in the first experiment, it was observed a decrease of weight and length in fish fed with 204 ppb aflatoxins kg-1. in the second experiment, significant difference in the tested variables did not occurred. for feed over 350 ppb kg-1, alterations in the liver and tissues occurred without compromising the growth for 35 days.

Abstract: three-dimensional computerized tomography angiography is a fast diagnosis method and low invasive that passed to be used recently in the cases of intracranial aneurysms. this method presents a 100% specificity and can reach 95% of sensibility in the evaluation of the aneurysms in the circle of willis, substituting the digital angiography but not in all of the cases. we report our experience in evaluation of the three-dimensional angiotomography exams in a period of 2 years between june of 1997 and june of 1999, were accomplished for detection of intracranial aneurysms in 136 patients, being 118 just with three-dimensional angiotomography and in 18 cases they were accomplished besides three-dimensional angiotomography also the conventional digital angiography. the exam of three-dimensional angiotomography possesses low risk being used better in the detection of the aneurysms when possess higher diameter than 3mm, with some limitations as in the very small aneurysms when smaller than 3mm, carotid intern cavarnous aneurysms, posterior circulation aneurysms as well as the non accomplishment of the dynamic exam.

Abstract: persistent left superior vena cava with absent right superior vena cava is a rare anomaly, with less than 150 cases reported in the literature. congenitally persistent left superior vena cava is the most common variant of systemic venous return to the heart, resulting embryologically from failure of the left anterior cardinal vein to become obliterated. its incidence varies from 0.3% in patients with otherwise normal heart to 4.3% in patients with congenital heart disease. in the majority of the patients, a right superior vena cava is present as well, but rarely the right anterior cardinal vein degenerates resulting in the absence of the normal right superior vena cava. the blood from the right side is carried by the persistent left superior vena cava to the right atrium through the coronary sinus. we report the case of a patient with a persistent left superior vena cava and absence of right superior vena cava identified by chance during a chest radiograph and computed tomography examination for investigation of chronic pulmonary obstructive disease. the patient had no congenital heart disease and the blood from the right side was drained by the persistent left superior vena cava into the right atrium through the coronary sinus.
