The development of Brazilian agriculture: future technological challenges and opportunities

Agriculture & Food Security , 2012, DOI: 10.1186/2048-7010-1-4
Abstract: Ensuring food security has always been a priority issue for governments, international organizations, and society in general. Recent developments have further increased the political, professional, and public concern about this issue worldwide. After remaining at historically low levels for decades, nominal food prices have become substantially higher and more volatile since the 2007 to 2008 food crisis. Between January 2007 and June 2008, food prices increased significantly, ranging from 38% for sugar to 224% for rice [1]. Prices for other major food crops such as maize and wheat also experienced sharp spikes in the same period. Following this period of steep rises, the prices of these and other agricultural commodities experienced a downturn in the second half of 2008.From the second half of 2010, food prices increased again, and peaked in January 2011. Through the course of 2011, a downward trend was re-established, but prices are still at historically high levels (Figure1). Depending on how world production evolves in the next years, nominal food prices could remain at or even above the 1997 to 2006 level [2,3].The consequences of higher prices and volatility in food markets are well documented in the literature, and include economic and political instability as well as cycles of positive and negative effects on consumers and producers. At high prices, increased poverty and malnutrition among the poor can be expected, but this trend for higher prices may also enhance investments in agricultural activities [4]. With increased supply, food prices decrease, benefiting consumers; however, excessive volatility may discourage longer-term investment in agriculture, and hence jeopardize an expansion in agricultural supply.The degree of future volatility in the food system is uncertain. Therefore, efforts are needed to minimize high levels of volatility in global food markets and ensure food security for all. The nature of this challenge requires country-level actions on
Association of the estrogen receptor gene Pvu II restriction polymorphism with expected progeny differences for reproductive and performance traits in swine herds in Brazil

Abstract: estrogen has an important function in swine reproduction and growth. a pvu ii restriction enzyme polymorphism has been proven to be an important genetic variation in the estrogen receptor gene (esr) and may be considered as a candidate gene for use in pig production but there is no data regarding the prevalence of this polymorphism in the brazilian pig population. we used dna samples from the following three purebred pig breeds: large white (336 females and 26 males), landrace (304 females and 27 males) and pietrain (125 females and 11 males). the esr genotyping was performed using pcr-rflp. for each breed, genotypes for the esr gene were compared independently for expected progeny differences (epd) in litter size (ls), average daily weight gain (dwg) (g/day) and back fat thickness (bt) as measured in mm by ultrasound. in the large white breed, but not the other breeds, the esr genotype was significantly (p < 0.05) associated to ls, dwg and bt. large whites genotyped as aa or ab had higher epd values for the ls and bt traits compared to bb large whites, while aa large whites had higher dwg epd values than bb large whites. our results for the large white population showed that the a allele has a beneficial effect on ls, dwg and bt expected progeny differences.

Abstract: two polymorphisms (ghc and ghd) in the growth hormone gene were evaluated in the ninety-six (96) animals of three breeds of pigs (pietrain, large white, and landrace), through pcr-rflp. allele frequencies observed for the ghc polymorphism were: c1 0.42, c2 0.0, c3 0.06 and c4 0.52 for landrace; c1 0.0, c2 0.03, c3 0.14 and c4 0.83 for large white and c1 0.02, c2 0.25, c3 0.28 and c4 0.45 for pietrain. the ghd polymorphism presented the following allele frequencies:. d1 0.69 and d2 0.31 for landrace; d1 0.25 and d2 0.75 for large white and d1 0.72 and d2 0.28 for pietrain.
O aprofundamento das rela??es do Brasil com os países do Oriente Médio durante os dois choques do petróleo da década de 1970: um exemplo de a??o pragmática
Santana, Carlos Ribeiro;
Revista Brasileira de Política Internacional , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-73292006000200009
Abstract: faced with the energy crises of the 70's brazil pursued a natural model of economic development that led to strengthening its ties with the middle east, which filled a certain diplomatic vacuum in brazil's foreign policy. with high oil prices, securing its supplies was a crucial issue to the country. in an international context that forced brazil to strengthen its political ties with the middle east, foreign policy action was then geared to pragmatic ends, which meant that diplomatic relation should be intensified as foreign exchange losses grew with oil imports, something which contributed to the diversification of brazil's relations with the countries in that region.

PALAVRAS-CHAVE: esporte – jogo – rendimento The aim of this research work is to analyze the occurrence of counter attacks in high performance football matches. 28 Brazilian National League matches which were broadcast on TV were recorded in VHS tapes and used for observation. Descriptive and percentual analyses were chosen to conduct results analysis. Of a total 521 counter attacks, 78% were made individually, either preceded by a pass interception or a tackle; 28,22% were assisted either by a fellow fielder, or by the goalkeeper. Results show that counter attacks occur both individually and collectively, they are caused by defensive actions and both the fi elders and the goalkeeper participate in it. This research work suggests that counter attack practice should be done from a variety of formations that stimulate defensive actions and encourage goalkeeper participation.
