Glycan Biomarkers in Cancer Diagnosis

Abstract: Glycosylation is a post-translational modification that is found on about 70% of all human proteins. It is sensitive to the biochemical envirnonment and has been shown to vary between contral and cancer patients. Glycans represent a new paradigm for biomarker discovery, but is faced with considerable challenges. Glycans are difficult to analyze in terms of their structure and their position in the proteins. In this presentation, the methods for glycan analysis are described in context of biomarker discovery. Glycosylation holds considerable promise potentially increasing the sensitivity and specificity
Statistical fatigue experiment design in medium density fiberboard

Abstract: medium density fiberboard (mdf) is a wood-based composite widely employed in several industrial applications, in addition to its use in structures subjected to dynamic loads. its fatigue-related aspects, however, have been consistently ignored. this work proposes to study fatigue in mdf, including the following factors: the basic concepts of mdf and fatigue and the statistical design of fatigue experiments in mdf, with the purpose of obtaining accurate information for analysis by means of statistical methods. the results of our tests revealed that the statistical model is suitable to fit the number of cycles in intermediary s and f levels and to determine the levels of the factors that maximize the total number of cycles to failure. it was also found that the proposed design is of great practical interest for fatigue strength in the tension in wood and wood derivatives.

Abstract: this paper shows the strategy used in the numeric modeling of a composite specimen of wood and concrete, with metallic connection system, with applied cyclical load. the modeling of the system was made starting from a three-dimensional model, using the software ansys, version 10.0, that has as base the method of the finite elements, in which different rupture models were considered for the materials, besides contact elements in the interfaces of the materials. the finite elements, as well as the materials used were chosen in function of representativeness for the behaviors to be simulated, in thus was possible the consideration of important effects as plasticity and ortotropia for the materials. the results obtained from the proposed modeling were compared with the experimental results of shear tests in composite specimens with load applied until the rupture, and the error obtained, in this case, was 15%. the aim of this work is to serve as base for the modeling of structural systems, present in several areas of engineering, among them, mechanics and civil, where materials with different structural behaviors are used. the proposed modeling makes possible the global analysis of the model and locates aspects of interest as the concentration of stress, effect of difficult quantification in an experimental analysis.

Abstract: Este artigo apresenta a estratégia utilizada na modelagem numérica de um corpo-de-prova misto de madeira e concreto, com sistema de conex o metálico, sob carregamento. A modelagem do sistema foi efetuada a partir de um modelo tridimensional, que utiliza o software ANSYS, vers o 10.0, que tem como base o Método dos Elementos Finitos, onde foram considerados diferentes modelos de ruptura para os materiais unidos, além de elementos de contato nas interfaces dos mesmos. Os elementos finitos, assim como os materiais utilizados, foram escolhidos em fun o de suas representatividades perante os comportamentos a serem simulados, para que, dessa forma, fosse possível a considera o de efeitos importantes como plasticidade e ortotropia para os materiais. Os resultados obtidos a partir da modelagem proposta foram comparados com os resultados experimentais de ensaios de cisalhamento, realizados em corpos-de-prova mistos com carregamento aplicado até a ruptura e o erro obtido, neste caso, foi de até 15%. A finalidade deste trabalho é servir de base para a modelagem de sistemas estruturais, presentes em diversas áreas da engenharia, dentre elas, mecanica e civil, onde s o utilizados materiais com diferentes comportamentos estruturais. A modelagem proposta possibilita a análise global do modelo assim como a análise dos aspectos localizados de interesse como a concentra o de tens es, efeito de difícil quantifica o em uma análise experimental. Wood frame systems for wood homes

Abstract: The use of constructive systems that combine strength, speed, with competitive differential techniques and mainly, compromising with the environment, is becoming more popular in Brazil. The constructive system in wood frame for houses of up to five stories is very interesting, because it is a light system, structured in reforested treated wood which allows the combination of several materials, besides allowing speed in the construction and total control of the expenses already in the project phase for being industrialized. The structural behavior of the wood frame is superior to the structural masonry in strength, thermal and acoustic comfort. However, in Brazil, the wood frame is still little known and used, due to lack of technical knowledge about the system, prejudice associated the bad use of the wood as construction material, or still, in some cases, lack of normalization. The aim of this manuscript consists of presenting the main technical characteristics and advantages of the constructive system in wood frame homes, approaching the main stages of the constructive process through examples, showing the materials used in the construction, in addition the main international normative recommendations of the project. Thus, this manuscript also hopes to contribute to the popularization of the wood frame system in Brazil, since it is a competitive, fast and ecologically correct system. Moreover, nowadays, an enormous effort of the technical, commercial and industrial section has been accomplished for the development of this system in the country.
Analysis and role of oligosaccharides in milk

Abstract: Milk is an important fluid in glycobiology because it contains anumber of short carbohydrate chains either free or asglycoconjugates. These compounds as a class are the mostabundant component and benefit the infant by developing andmaintaining the infant’s gut flora. New and emerging methodsfor oligosaccharide analysis have been developed to study milk.These methods allow for the rapid profiling of oligosaccharidemixtures with quantitation. With these tools, the role ofoligosaccharide in milk is being understood. They further pointto how oligosaccharide analysis can be performed, which untilnow has been very difficult and have lagged significantly thoseof other biopolymers.

Abstract: the demand of new bridges and rehabilitation of the existing ones in brazil is evident, in the municipal, state and federal scope. the construction of efficient roads can provide, besides comfort to the users, a cost decrease for the transportation of food and other products, since almost all the transportation in the country is made through highways. according to the estimate made by the wood and timber structures laboratory (lamem) of s?o paulo university, more than 100,000 of short and medium span bridges are necessary to improve brazilian roads. therefore, the study of competitive technologies is of extreme importance, in order to minimize the budget needed to these improvements. this work reports on a technical and economical viability analysis of transversally pre-stressed timber bridges, for the use in rural and secondary roads. the analysis was made through design, construction and monitoring of the first pre-stress-laminated timber bridge in south america. the results show high performance, low cost, easy and quick execution.
Comportamento aerodinamico e efeito de enrijecimento externo em silos cilíndricos sob a a??o do vento

Abstract: steel cylindrical silos, when empty, are susceptible to the crumpling of the sheeting of the cylinder by the wind action. this paper compares the effects of internal and external stiffening with columns on the aerodynamic behavior of cylindrical silos with conical roof. the theoretical studies leaded to wind tunnel experiments, which have been carried out on two types of scaled silo models, one with smooth surface (internal stiffening), the other with ribbed surface (external stiffening), both with two geometric height/diameter ratio of cylinder (0.5 and 1.0) and a conical roof pitch equal to 27o. based on the information gained during these experiments, external coefficients of pressure and drag and lift coefficients are derived for the cylinders, as well as the drag and lift coefficients for the conical roofs. with this, it is identified the best stiffening arrangement for an optimum design of cylindrical silos to resist wind loads. the final result is an updated data set, originated from tests with geometric and aerodynamic characteristics well conditioned, which are applicable to a variety of cylindrical silos.

Abstract: medium density fiberboard (mdf), is a wood-base composite widely employed in several industrial applications, in addition to its use in timber structures subjected to dynamic load. the fatigue life of this material have been little attention by researches in the area. therefore, the objective of this work is to present a orthogonal polynomial model to estimate the fatigue strength in the tensile of mdf subjected to stress. the results of the tests on specimens showed that the orthogonal polynomial model based on a central orthogonal composite design is a good estimator of the number of cycles as a function of the stress and frequency for both real and undetermined extrapolet values
