Abstract: because an enriched environment (ee) enhances t-cell activity and t-lymphocytes contribute to immunopathogenesis during heterologous dengue virus (denv) infections, we hypothesised that an ee increases dengue severity. to compare single serotype (ss) and antibody-enhanced disease (aed) infections regimens, serial intraperitoneal were performed with denv3 (genotype iii) infected brain homogenate or anti-denv2 hyperimmune serum followed 24 h later by denv3 (genotype iii) infected brain homogenate. compared aed for which significant differences were detected between the ee and impoverished environmental (ie) groups (kaplan-meyer log-rank test, p = 0.0025), no significant differences were detected between the ss experimental groups (kaplan-meyer log-rank test, p = 0.089). survival curves from ee and ie animals infected with the aed regimen were extended after corticoid injection and this effect was greater in the ee than in the ie group (kaplan-meyer log-rank test, p = 0.0162). under the aed regimen the ee group showed more intense clinical signs than the ie group. dyspnoea, tremor, hunched posture, ruffled fur, immobility, pre-terminal paralysis, shock and death were associated with dominant t-lymphocytic hyperplasia and presence of viral antigens in the liver and lungs. we propose that the increased expansion of these memory t-cells and serotype cross-reactive antibodies facilitates the infection of these cells by denv and that these events correlate with disease severity in an ee.

Brazilian Journal of Chemical Engineering , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-66322008000200010
Abstract: "cajuina" is a very popular drink in the brazilian northeastern region and is produced by clarifying cashew apple juice. to preserve "cajuina" from chancing, the clarified cashew apple juice is submitted to thermal treatment where a desired final color should be obtained. to optimize color formation while maintaining high vitamin c and low 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-hmf) concentrations the thermal treatment of "cajuina" needs to be studied and the non enzymatic mechanism should be better understood and controlled. in this work the effect of thermal treatment on "cajuina" (clarified cashew apple juice) was studied at temperatures from 88°c to 121°c. changes in color were measured and the variation in vitamin c, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-hmf) and sugar content were used to evaluate non enzymatic browning. the kinetic models were used to optimize the thermal treatment to produce "cajuina" with an absorbance at 420 nm of 0.023.

Costa, M?nica Barros;Lanna, Carla Marcia Moreira;Braga, Maria Helena;Magalhes, Simone;
Jornal Brasileiro de Patologia e Medicina Laboratorial , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1676-24442008000500004
Abstract: introduction: indiscriminate serum calcium measurement may lead to the identification of asymptomatic patients with hypercalcaemia, which is caused mostly by primary hyperparathyroidism. objective: to discuss the frequency of hypercalcaemia and the type of assessment of this condition in an outpatient population, with emphasis on the investigation of primary hyperparathyroidism. material and methods: in a prospective study 1,049 subjects (age range: 40 to 60 years old) underwent serum calcium and albumin determination and the corrected calcium values were calculated. when there was a rise in the corrected calcium level, ionized calcium, phosphate, parathyroid hormone (pth) and urinary calcium were measured. results: the average age was 49.7 ± 13.7 years old, and 188 subjects (17.9%) had elevated corrected calcium levels. among these, 90 patients underwent the second investigation and 19 (2%) remained hypercalcemic. ionized calcium levels (average: 1.2 ± 0.01 mmol/l) were normal in all subjects. urinary calcium was 185.8 ± 111.8 mg/24 hours. pth levels (average: 46 ± 11.8 pg/ml) were elevated in three subjects whose parathyroid scintigraphies were normal. discussion: the fall in the frequency of hypercalcaemia based on corrected serum calcium levels and mostly after determination of serum ionized calcium suggests that determinations of serum free calcium are a better screening test. no subject was diagnosed with hyperparathyroidism, what suggests an uneven distribution of the disease in different populations. conclusion: routine serum calcium determinations in asymptomatic patients must be questioned. when serum calcium determination is thought necessary, ionized calcium levels should be favored.

Revista de Saúde Pública , 1994, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89101994000200007
Abstract: a 10% sample of patients who attended two primary health care units (phcu) in pelotas, rs (brazil) was studied cross-sectinonally for the purpose of measuring qualitatively the attention being offered to the population. according to domiciliar interviews, 15 days after their appointments, a solution (cure or improvement) was achieved in 87.9% of the patients. patients or parents satisfaction (in the case of pediatric patients) was observed in nearly 90% of the sample. patient satisfaction and solution were statistically associated (p=0.04). association between the solution and the availability of medicines in the phcu was observed. patients who had received the whole or a part of their treatment had 33% greater probability of solving their problem. professional satisfaction was linearly associated with both perception of a better professional-patient relationship (pr=3.48; ci95%2.17-5.59) and the expectation of a better patient prognosis (pr=1.99; ci95% 1.36-2.91).

Abstract: the objective of this study was to describe the pollen grain development in hermaphrodite papaya tree. the flower buds were collected at different stages of the development and the anthers were treated chemically for observation under optical and electronic transmission microscopes. the pollen grain development followed the normal pattern described for the angiosperms. the pollen grain development was described from meiocyte to the mature pollen grain. in the microsporogenesis, the microspore mother cells or the meiocytes underwent meiosis giving rise to the tetrads that were enclosed by the calose. later, the tetrads were released by the dissolution of the calose by calase activity and microspores underwent mitosis. microgametogenesis was characterized by asymmetrical mitotic division of each microspore giving rise to bi-nucleate pollen grains. the structures similar to the plastids were found in the cytoplasm and close to the nucleus of the generative cell. gradual degeneration was observed in the tapetum during the male gamete development.

Abstract: surface electromyography has clinical and research importance for the physiotherapist. although capturing electrical activity promoted by recruitment of motor units, there is a good correlation between the number of activated units and muscle strength. this is one of the methods of higher specificity in pelvic floor evaluation, although the lack of consensus regarding its application. the aim of this literature review was to cluster information regarding to the use of surface electromyography in the evaluation of pelvic floor. papers were searched in medline, pubmed lilacs, scielo and cochrane library. were selected papers which methods used surface electromyography to evaluate the pelvic floor. although its methodology still lacks standardization, is an instrument that should be considered in scientific research in our country because it seems to have good reproducibility and reliability. women with pelvic floor disorders have changes in the activation time of the pelvic floor muscles (pfm) and abdominal muscles. with respect to pregnancy and postpartum, there is a lack of evidence on possible changes in electrical activation of pfm in these periods.

Journal of Cancer Therapy (JCT) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/jct.2018.92011
Abstract: Gastric cancer (GC) is a major public health issue. It is considered the 5th most common cancer diagnosed worldwide and it is one of the main causes of malignant disease-associated morbidity and mortality. The cornerstone of curative treatment is still surgery, and since the rate of relapse is high, a multidisciplinary approach is warranted in most developed countries. And while there have been recent developments in the perioperative scenario namely the FLOT regimen, little has advanced considering patient selection. We have reviewed the major trials in this setting and provide some insights from recently reported microsatellite instability (MSI) in a subgroup analysis in the MAGIC trial patients that seem to suggest an opportunity to patient selection. Furthermore, GC subtyping may prove helpful selecting candidates to immunotherapy or even multimodal therapy in the future. As the paradigm is moving towards a precision oncology model, GC patient selection remains one the biggest challenges in oncology but seems closer to clinical practice reality as new developments are being reported.

Abstract: this study was conducted in the morro alto community, municipal district of acau? (pi), located in serra da parreira, 620 m altitude. the objective was to evaluate the growth and production of the cassava in the intercropping with guandu, sorgo, caupi, cotton and sunflower in an agroecological production system. the height, foliar retention and survival of the cassava plants did not present significant differences considering the consortium types. a difference was only observed among varieties in relation to the survival of the plants, the variety "do céu" (bgm 537) showing the greatest survival percentage. the species intercropping maintained different soil humidity contents, guandu standing out as the crop that maintained the largest soil humidity content (10%), even so the consortium type did not modify the productivity of roots. it was observed that the production of roots varied from 13 to 26 t ha-1, depending on the variety used. this productivity, considered above average for the region (12 t ha-1), shows that intercropping, mainly with legumes such as the bean caupi and guandu, can improve not only farmer's revenue but also soil characteristics in rainfed areas.
