Abstract: ruminal acidosis is due to excessive ingestion of carbohydrates of rapid fermentation without previous adaptation of the microorganisms, causing severe metabolic disturbances to the animals. the objective of the present study was to assess the neutrophilic oxidative metabolism in sheep treated with sodium monensin in experimentally induced ruminal lactic acidosis. a total of 18 male sheep, half-bred (ideal x merino), fistulated in the rumen, were used; nine of them received 33 mg/kg of the ionophore diet per day, for 30 days; the others were controls. the acidosis was induced by supplying 15g of sucrose/kg of body weight. the clinical evaluation and the rumen and blood samples were obtained before (0h) and at 6, 12, 24 and 48 hours post-induction. in both groups, all the animals presented clinical manifestations of ruminal lactic acidosis 6 hours after the induction. from this period on, a significant ph decrease (p<0.05) was observed in the ruminal fluid, which reached levels below 5. there were relevant differences (p<0.05) between the groups 12 hours after the induction, when the sheep treated with monensin had higher values than those of the control group. during this period, the oxidative metabolism of the neutrophils remained inhibited, and the reestablishment of this function only occurred in the sheep which received monensin. blood ph, plasmatic glucose and the ionizable calcium suffered alterations within its levels. the seric cortisol concentration rose significantly (p<0.05) in both groups, although differences (p<0.05) between them were found at the end of the observation period. the treatment with monensin did not influence the oxidative metabolism of the neutrophils inhibited by the lactic acidosis; however, a faster recovery of this metabolism was verified in the animals treated with the ionophore.
A Constructive Meta-Level Feature Selection Method based on Method Repositories

Journal of Computers , 2006, DOI: 10.4304/jcp.1.3.20-26
Abstract: Feature selection is one of key issues related with data pre-processing of classification task in a data mining process. Although many efforts have been done to improve typical feature selection algorithms (FSAs), such as filter methods and wrapper methods, it is hard for just one FSA to manage its performances to various datasets. To above problems, we propose another way to support feature selection procedure, constructing proper FSAs to each given dataset. Here is discussed constructive metalevel feature selection that re-constructs proper FSAs with a method repository every given datasets, de-composing representative FSAs into methods. After implementing the constructive meta-level feature selection system, we show how constructive meta-level feature selection goes well with 34 UCI common data sets, comparing with typical FSAs on their accuracies. As the result, our system shows the high performance on accuracies with lower computational costs to construct a proper FSA to each given data set automatically.

Abstract: We discuss the geometric structures defined by Young in [9, 10], which are used to prove the existence of an ergodic absolutely continuous invariant probability measure and to study the decay of correlations in expanding or hyperbolic systems on large parts.

Abstract: the importance of studies with hematological, serum biochemistry and urinary values of crab-eating fox (cerdocyon thous) is based on the need for health care and maintenance of those populations. this paper has the objective to investigate hematological, serum biochemistry and urinary physiological parameters of the crab-eating fox, comparing gender and age differences. blood samples were collected in 2003 from 52 animals of different zoos in s?o paulo state, brazil; 7ml of blood was used to obtain a complete blood cell count (cbc) and the profile of the serum biochemistry. moreover, 5ml of urine were collected for analysis. there was no difference in values for male and female animals, as for the cbc and serum biochemistry. some hematological and serum biochemical parameters were influenced by age, showing significant differences. urinalysis results were just demonstrated in a descriptive form. the studied values were, rbc 4.35±0.73 x 106 /μl, wbc 7.72±3.66 x 103 /μl (predominance of segmented neutrophils), platelets 227.06±111.58 x 103 /μl, urea 43.06±14.28mg/dl and creatinine 1.03±0.24mg/dl. hematological, serum biochemistry and urinary values obtained in this study can be used as physiological values of the captive crab-eating fox. it is possible to conclude that wild species need their own reference values, differentiating animals in captivity from free-ranging animals.

Abstract: Maltase-glucoamylase (MGAM) and sucrase-isomaltase (SI) belong to human intestinal alpha-glucosidase and their N-terminal side catalytic domains are called NtMGAM and NtSI, and their C-terminal side catalytic domains are called CtMGAM and CtSI. As an antidiabetic, alpha-glucosidase inhibitor is required to bind to all of these domains to inhibit disaccharides hydrolysis. Salacinol and kotalanol isolated from Salacia reticulata are novel seed compounds for al-pha-glucosidase inhibitor. Even though the complex structures of NtMGAM or NtSI have been determined experimen-tally, those of CtMGAM and CtSI have not been revealed. Thus, homology modeling for CtMGAM and CtSI has been performed to predict the binding mode of salacinol and its derivatives for each domain. The binding affinities for these compounds were also calculated to explain the experimental structure-activity relationships (SARs). After a docking study of the derivatives to each catalytic domain, the MM/PBSA method has been applied to predict the binding affinities. The predicted binding affinities were almost consistent with the experimental SARs. The comparison of the complex structures and binding affinities provided insights for designing novel compounds, which inhibit all catalytic domains.
Strategic Information Systems Planning: An Empirical Evaluation of Its Dimensions
Wilkin,Carla L; Cerpa,Narciso;
Journal of technology management & innovation , 2012, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-27242012000200005
Abstract: strategic management of information technology (it) has long been regarded as a critical component of business performance. this study addresses two objectives. firstly we investigate the practice and effectiveness of strategic information systems planning (sisp) as a function of strategic management in 29 large australian organizations. secondly we review these results through a theoretical lens established by segars et al. (1998) who identified six dimensions that provide a structured approach to reviewing the sisp process. our results show that sisp was widely used in these 29 organizations in aspects such as planning associated with strategic is investment and application, and whilst the theoretical review generally supported the literature, some amendments are required to the participation and focus dimensions suggested by segars et al. (1998). such results have implications for both practitioners and researchers.
A Comparison of Analysis of Covariate-Adjusted Residuals and Analysis of Covariance
Elvan Ceyhan,Carla L. Goad
Statistics , 2009,
Abstract: Various methods to control the influence of a covariate on a response variable are compared. In particular, ANOVA with or without homogeneity of variances (HOV) of errors and Kruskal-Wallis (K-W) tests on covariate-adjusted residuals and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) are compared. Covariate-adjusted residuals are obtained from the overall regression line fit to the entire data set ignoring the treatment levels. It is demonstrated that the methods on covariate-adjusted residuals are only appropriate when the regression lines are parallel and means are equal for treatment factors. Empirical size and power performance of the methods are compared by extensive Monte Carlo simulations. We manipulated the conditions such as assumptions of normality and HOV, sample size, and clustering of the covariates. Guidelines on which method to use for various cases are also provided.
