Ciência Rural , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-84782008000400032
Abstract: this study aimed the evaluation of the consumers preference for coffee in the west region of paraná state, brazil, in relation to the roasting degree and grinding granulometry. sensorial preference and physical-chemichal analysis were made. the physical-chemichal analysis were used to monitor the changes that occurred in the products along the roasting process. the samples of coffee with light toasts were little accepted. the kind of coffee that presented preferred global appearance, aroma and taste was the one which presented average dark toasting, which is the one that is more similar to the traditional brazilians toastings. the darkest toasting, was well-accepted in relation to appearance. the thin milling was preferred in relation to the global appearance of the product, but in spite of having presented major acidity the tasters did not make difference about its taste.

Abstract: This article aims at reviewing the most important schools of thought which undertook language acquisition as the main field of research. We depart from classical approaches to language, such as behaviorism and nativism, and discuss further developments on theories of learning and acquisition. Given the relatively scarse scientific literature on bilingualism, our goal is also put together some works on this subject-matter, while attempting to find resources to clarify a number of questions raised along the discussion, such as what is it that defines first, second and foreign language? Can a foreign language be acquired instead of learned? What role does context play in acquisition/learning process?

Nakamura, Robertha Carvalho;Abreu, Luciana de;Duque-Estrada, Bruna;Tamler, Carla;Leverone, Andreia Pizarro;
Anais Brasileiros de Dermatologia , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0365-05962012000200003
Abstract: background: nail psoriasis may affect up to 90% of patients with psoriasis in the course of the disease throughout their lives and it is often a therapeutic challenge to dermatologists. topical treatments described in the literature have demonstrated variable efficacy, and unsatisfactory results have been associated to inefficient penetration of the active ingredient into the nail plate and proximal nail fold. recently the use of clobetasol on nail lacquer vehicle has been suggested, with satisfactory results and no side effects. objective: to determine the efficacy and safety of clobetasol in nail lacquer vehicle in three concentrations (0.05%, 1% and 8%) in patients with nail psoriasis. methods: prospective, controlled, randomized pilot study in fifteen patients with nail bed and/or nail matrix psoriasis in both hands, subdivided into three groups: a(0.05% clobetasol nail lacquer), b(1% clobetasol nail lacquer) and c(8% clobetasol nail lacquer). all groups used clobetasol nail lacquer on the left hand and base coat nail lacquer as control on the right, twice a week for 16 weeks. clinical evaluation was done by photographic records and the napsi score of both treated and control hands, as well as modified napsi score of the most affected nail of the treated hand. results: group c showed a statistically relevant clinical response compared to the other groups, reflected in the improvement of clinical parameters, of treated hand napsi score, when compared to the control hand, and modified napsi score of the most affected nail in the treated hand. conclusion: the 8% clobetasol nail lacquer was effective and safe, and it can be considered a good option of topical therapy in the treatment of nail psoriasis.

Revista chilena de pediatría , 2002, DOI: 10.4067/S0370-41062002000500005
Abstract: introduction: the origin of non-transmissible diseases is associated with risk factors related to harmful life styles. it is interesting to observe these factors in medical students. objectives: to quantify the prevalence of risk factors of chronicnon-transmissible diseases in medical students. patients and methods: a cross sectional study was carried out on 242 medical students, in yearly groups, 1st to 5th year attending the school of medicine of the university of valparaiso. risk factors quantified were: physical inactivity, overweight and obesity, tabacco addiction and hypertension. results: after statistical analysis, the risk factor with the highest prevalence (88%) was physical inactivity, with no sex or year difference. over weight and obesity (31.8%) was higher in males but with no year difference. in relation to tabacco abuse (22.7%) it was higher in females, but smoking intensity was higher in males, with no differences between early groups. finally, normal high arterial pressure (4.6%) was higher in males. conclusion: the prevalence of risk factors is high and preventive strategies are recommended.

Free radical scavenging activity of ethanolic extracts from herbs and spices commercialized in Brazil
Mariutti, Lilian Regina Barros;Barreto, Gisela Pizarro de Mattos;Bragagnolo, Neura;Mercadante, Adriana Zerlotti;
Brazilian Archives of Biology and Technology , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-89132008000600018
Abstract: ethanolic extracts from 23 different dried herbs and spices commercialized in brazil were investigated for their free radical scavenging properties using the stable free radicals 2,2'-diphenyl-β-picrylhydrazyl (dpph?) and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (abts?+), and trolox as reference (teac) for both radicals. the kinetic curves for both radicals showed to follow the first order kinetics model and the decay rate constant (kobs) was calculated. for all the samples, the two methods showed a good linear teac correlation, indicating that the average reactivity of the compounds present in the ethanolic extracts was similar. sage and rosemary extracts showed the highest free radical scavenging capacities, while onion showed negligible activity and colorifico, one of the most consumed spices in brazil, showed low abts?+ scavenging activity. three distinct situations were found for the extracts concerning the dpph? scavenging capacities: (1) extracts, like rosemary and laurel, that presented the same efficient concentrations (ec50 ) but differed in the teac values and velocities of action (kobs), (2) extracts, such as garlic and basil, that showed similar ec50 and teac values, but different kobs values and (3) extracts that reacted at the same velocities but completely differed in the free radical scavenging capacities, like black pepper, savory, nutmeg, rosemary and sage. similar considerations could be done for the abts?+ results. for the first time the abts?+ scavenging activity for allspice, basil, cardamom, chives, colorifico, cumin, dill, laurel, marjoram, parsley and tarragon was reported.

Abrah?o,Ana Lucia; Martins,Carla Macedo; Geisler,Adriana;
Ciência & Saúde Coletiva , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-81232008000100028
Abstract: the paper analyses concepts of the 'subject' in academic literature on healthcare management. the corpus of the survey consists of papers published in journals in the collective health field over the past five years. the papers examined for this analysis consider that (healthcare) work in the context of capitalism is based on an antinomy that we call "autonomy-control", striving to explore the possibilities of surmounting this antinomy in each concept. the analysis lists three different concepts of the subject: psychological-cognitivist, psychoanalytical-subjectivist and historical-communicative. this paper also discusses the relationship between these concepts of subject and their possibilities of producing autonomy on one hand, and the capitalist organization of culture and labor on the other.
