A forma??o do professor em face das violências das/nas escolas
Gomes, Candido Alberto;Pereira, Marlene Monteiro;
Cadernos de Pesquisa , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-15742009000100010
Abstract: the unveiling of violence from/at schools has led to the development of research on initial and continued teacher education. some analyze the professional socialization of teachers and find issues such as the new faces of the "reality shock" by teachers. thus, an investigation on the perceptions of teachers on types of violence and on their own preparedness for teaching has been conducted. the results, obtained by means of focus groups carried out with teachers, confirm the perception that they are not prepared to experience the practice of teaching, even if gradually. among the proposals presented by participants, we should point out the construction of a more adequate gradient between theory and practice, the more practical nature of courses and the development of the capacity to find solutions without ready recipes.

Abstract: the tissue flow and structural traits of panicum maximum cv. momba?a canopy were evaluated under intermittent stocking, with rest period (rp) defined in terms of the time required for the expansion of 2.5; 3.5 and 4.5 new leaves per tiller. the pasture treatment was divided into five or six paddocks (replicates) per treatment, observing a completely randomized design. one group of five holstein-zebu crossbred steers, as testers, grazed the paddocks of the respective treatment during six days. put and taken steers were used, when necessary, to obtain a residual leaf area index (lai) of about 2.0, by the end of the 6th grazing day. during the rps of three grazing cycles, leaf elongation rate (ler), leaf senescence rate (lsr), culm elongation rate (cer) and net herbage accumulation rate (nhar) were estimated. by the beginning and end of each rp, the following structural variables were estimated: canopy height, green herbage dry matter (ghdm) and leaf/culm ratio. tiller population density (tpd) was assessed after each grazing period. the variables cer and leaf/culm ratio were markedly affected by the rp. only the short 2.5 leaves rp exerted some control upon culm elongation. marked canopy plasticity was observed in response to rps. ler (7.6 cm/tiller x day) and tpd (350 tillers/m2) were the determinant growth components in 2.5 leaves canopy, while cer (0.29 cm/tiller x day) was the important growth component in the 4.5 leaves canopy regrowth. the longer the rp, the higher the canopy height and the ghdm, due to increasing contribution of culm fraction, which brought about marked reduction in leaf/culm ratio.
Período de descanso, valor nutritivo e desempenho animal em pastagem de Panicum maximum cv. Momba?a sob lota??o intermitente

Abstract: it was assessed the nutritive value of hand plucked forage samples collected along the grazing period and the animal performance on momba?agrass pasture under intermittent stocking with three rest periods (rp). the rps were defined by the time required for the expansion of 2.5, 3.5, and 4.5 new leaves per tiller, after six days grazing period. the experimental area was divided into five paddocks for the 2.5 new leaves rp and six paddocks for the 3.5 and 4.5 new leaves rps. five crossbreed (holstein x zebu) steers were randomly assigned to each treatment (rp) as tester animals; put and taken steers were used to assure residual leaf area index of about 2.0, by the end of each grazing period. a npk fertilization of 100; 25 and 100 kg/ha of n, p2o5 and k2o, respectively, divided into two applications, was broadcasted on each paddock at the beginning and middle of the experimental period. the following evaluations were performed: chemical composition and in vitro dry matter digestibility of hand plucked forage samples, forage intake and live weight gain of tester animals. the rest period had less effect on forage nutritive value than the grazing period; still, the rest period affected steer live weight gains. the longest rp resulted in low animal performance (433 g/steer ′ day) and yield (363 kg bw/ha); on the other hand, the shortest rp favored high animal performance (704 g/steer ′ day) and yield (546 kg bw/ha). it is concluded that rest period of panicum maximum cv. momba?a should not exceed the time for the expansion of 2.5 new leaves per tiller, which varied from 24 to 41 days over the experimental period.
A escola de qualidade para todos: abrindo as camadas da cebola
Gomes, Candido Alberto;
Ensaio: Avalia??o e Políticas Públicas em Educa??o , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-40362005000300002
Abstract: educational research presents numerous findings today on how to build a qualified school for all. this paper recognizes the importance of the social origins of the students, educational management, evaluation, curricular organization etc. however, if focuses on selected features related to the differences among and within schools, on the basis of the national and international literature. considering that the peculiar structure of the educational systems is similar to an onion, with its successive peels, this work analyses factors affecting learning, such as expenditure, facilities and equipment, time, teachers, school climate and management, peer effects, enrollment procedures, space management, student grouping, and other factors that affect effectively in the classroom. therefore, it is possible to shape such a school, particularly in developing countries, where its impact is stronger than in developed countries.
Desseria??o escolar: alternativa para o sucesso?
Gomes, Candido Alberto;
Ensaio: Avalia??o e Políticas Públicas em Educa??o , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-40362005000100002
Abstract: this paper presents a review of the research literature on primary education policies in the last 15 years in brazil aimed to reduce the repetition rate by means of the adoption of cycles and other alternatives to the traditional organization in grades. the basic goal is to find if these policies have contributed to improve or to reduce pupils' performance. the study selected 62 research projects, with diverse theoretical and methodological approaches. results show that different experiences have risks and disadvantages, among them the rupture of the so called social contract for school, partially based on the repetition threat. accelerated learning projects have showed positive results. however, the deeper the changes aimed toward the educational codes, the stronger are the resistances. policies not seldom neglect careful implementation. research projects involving larger populations find that new policies do not improve or reduce pupils' achievement significantly. the international literature emphasizes the importance of strong support to pupils with difficulties. comparative studies also show that repetition is a cultural, often biased phenomenon. conclusions warn that policies implemented in the country brazil may reduce their focus to the mere increase of efficiency and reduction of costs, by correcting the distortion age-grade. nevertheless, low levels of quality and equity may remain.
Regime de colabora??o intergovernamental: alternativa para a maioridade do ensino médio
Gomes, Candido Alberto;
Cadernos de Pesquisa , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-15742000000100002
Abstract: the first and second levels of education in brazil (8+3 years) have shared buildings, equipment and even faculty for a long time. the fast enrolment increase of the second level arises important questions on the actual needs of school construction, as well as on enrolment decentralization and schools pedagogical identity. census data reveal that it will be necessary to build numerous schools, however, there is still significant underutilization of space and time. therefore, state and municipal governments will need to co-operate, keeping to share personnel and material resources. for better results it is necessary to operationalize the intergovernmental collaboration system, prescribed by constitution. clearer and steadier rules are to be negotiated, avoiding casuistical or arbitrary solutions.
Quinze anos de ciclos no ensino fundamental: um balan?o das pesquisas sobre sua implanta??o
Gomes, Candido Alberto;
Revista Brasileira de Educa??o , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-24782004000100005
Abstract: presents a review of research conducted in the last 15 years on the implementation of two-year cycles and other alternatives for changing the organization by grade in primary education, presented as innovations adopted against high repetition rates. although numerous studies focus on restricted experiences, in the form of theses and dissertations, their results point out both to favorable and unfavorable factors in the process of implementation of those innovations. these factors have often been the same along these twenty years. they were particularly related to the failure to convince and engage the actors at school level, as well as to the missing basic conditions to improve teachers? work. as a result, public administration proposals were often misinterpreted and distorted at the local level. the reinterpretation of cycles as automatic promotion by teachers and pupils may often lead to increasing access to poor schooling so that social differences are reinforced.

Palazzo, Janete;Gomes, Candido Alberto;
Ensaio: Avalia??o e Políticas Públicas em Educa??o , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-40362009000200003
Abstract: this study aimed to assess if the criteria for progressing in the professors' career of a higher education institution are the same that make a teacher good in the pupils' view. the literature highlights many factors that influence pupils' gains, however, it considers that the classic progressing criteria tend not to wield clearly effects on pupils' gains. the exploratory research project used, to collect data, a questionnaire filled out by students, previously constructed, tested and approved as part of the institutional evaluation process. besides verifying the professors' performance from the students' perspective, this research project related professors' characteristics valued by the career ladder (degree, experience, seniority in the institution and academic publications) to their performance according to the students' evaluations. it was concluded that, in the institution investigated, there was no significant relationship between the evaluation of professors' performance and the variables for progressing in career, confirming the literature on basic education.
Democratiza??o e financiamento da educa??o profissional: uma provocativa experiência
Gomes, Candido Alberto da Costa;
Ensaio: Avalia??o e Políticas Públicas em Educa??o , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-40362008000200002
Abstract: this is a study case on an experience of vocational/technical education mostly financed by industrial employers in an area where misqualified personnel were a serious problem. in the first research (1990), technical schools were consolidated, although facing financial difficulty to make investments, and also to keep low tuitions for students interested in technical jobs instead of those interested in higher education. the second research (2005) results showed that the schools had overcome a serious crisis, and that they had also expanded and adopted more rigorous management. in 15 years, the industrial sector has adopted much more capital-intense technologies, having as a result, more qualified and less numerous employees. to answer this new demand and assuring more financial autonomy, the organization established a high school and a school of engineering. besides sale services, the most recent units contribute to fund the technical schools by a kind of robin hood effect.
