Moraes, Maria Lygia Quartim de;
Cadernos Pagu , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-83332011000200017
Abstract: the family in disorder, written by historian and psychoanalyst elizabeth roudinesco, is one of the most positive contributions to the study of the families in the contemporary world. the author's thesis is that despite all the "disorder", ranging from the loss of paternal power and homosexual couples, the institution of the family is surviving. according to her, the family is being claimed as the "single value insurance to which nobody wants to renounce", regardless of age, sex, sexual orientation or social class. this yearning for the family brings with it rearrangements, resultant of the "family in disorder", and new rights that challenge the traditional assumptions about the theme.

Abstract: obesity has been significantly increasing worldwide, and environmental factors such as excessive food intake and sedentary lifestyle are the main factors related to the genesis of this disease. in laboratory animals, the genesis of obesity is related mostly to genetic mutations, but this model is far from that found in humans. the use of hypercaloric or hyperlipidemic diets has been used as a model of obesity induction in animals, because of its similarity to the genesis and metabolic responses caused by obesity in humans. the objective of this review is to show the different types of diets used to induce obesity in rodents, the induced metabolic alterations, and to identify some points that should be taken into account so that the model can be effective for the study of obesity-related complications. a search was performed in the pubmed database using the following keywords: 1- "hypercaloric diet" and "rodent", 2- "hyperlipidic diet" and "rodent", selecting those considered the most relevant according to the following criteria: date of publication (1995-2011); the use of wild-type animals; detailed description of the diet used and analysis of biochemical and vascular parameters of interest. references were included to introduce subjects such as the increased prevalence of obesity and questions related to the genesis of obesity in humans. the model of diet-induced obesity in rodents can be considered effective when the objective is the study of the physiopathology of metabolic and vascular complications associated with obesity.
Influence of substratum position and acquired pellicle on Candida albicans biofilm

Brazilian Oral Research , 2013,
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of the substratum position and the saliva acquired pellicle (AP) on Candida albicans biofilm development. Poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) disks were fabricated and randomly allocated to experimental groups: HNP (disks placed in a horizontal position and uncoated by pellicle), VNP (disks placed in a vertical position and uncoated by pellicle), HCP (disks placed in a horizontal position and coated by pellicle), and VCP (disks placed in a vertical position and coated by pellicle). Disks were placed in a 24-well plate and a suspension of 107 cells/mL of Candida albicans was added to each well for biofilm development. The plates were aerobically incubated at 35°C. The biofilms were evaluated at 1.5 (adhesion time point), 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours. The number of viable cells was quantified in terms of the colony-forming units per milliliter (CFU/mL). Metabolic activity was measured by the XTT assay. The biofilm structure was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. The data were analyzed by three-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's test, with significance set at 5%. The vertical groups showed less biofilm formation and lower metabolic activity than the horizontal groups (p< 0.05). Significant differences in cell viability and metabolic activity were observed between the adhesion and other time points (p< 0.05), but these variables were not affected by the presence of the pellicle (p > 0.05). It can be concluded that the substratum position influenced biofilm development.

Abstract: Transplantation brings hope for many patients. A multidisciplinary approach on this field aims at creating biologically functional tissues to be used as implants and prostheses. The freeze-drying process allows the fundamental properties of these materials to be preserved, making future manipulation and storage easier. Optimizing a freeze-drying cycle is of great importance since it aims at reducing process costs while increasing product quality of this time-and-energy-consuming process. Mathematical modeling comes as a tool to help a better understanding of the process variables behavior and consequently it helps optimization studies. Freeze-drying microscopy is a technique usually applied to determine critical temperatures of liquid formulations. It has been used in this work to determine the sublimation rates of a biological tissue freeze-drying. The sublimation rates were measured from the speed of the moving interface between the dried and the frozen layer under 21.33, 42.66 and 63.99 Pa. The studied variables were used in a theoretical model to simulate various temperature profiles of the freeze-drying process. Good agreement between the experimental and the simulated results was found.

Abstract: introduction: hypertensive nephroangiosclerosis is a major cause of chronic kidney disease requiring dialysis. clinical characteristics that distinguish a patient with hypertension that evolves to nephroangiosclerosis from another that keeps stable renal function are not well established because of the difficulty in ensuring that the carriers of that disease are not actually suffering from glomerulonephritis or other kidney diseases. thus, our objective was to identify clinical or laboratory features that distinguish the patients who developed chronic renal failure from hypertension, confirmed by renal biopsy, of those who, even with arterial hypertension, did not develop nephroangiosclerosis. methods: we conducted a retrospective comparison of clinical and laboratory data of 15 patients with hypertensive nephroangiosclerosis confirmed by renal biopsy and 15 hypertensive patients from the outpatient clinic of the hypertension center, whose lack of nephroangiosclerosis was defined as absence of proteinuria. the groups were matched for age and gender. results: among the evaluated variables, duration of hypertension, pulse pressure, blood glucose, uric acid, creatinine and frequency of use of diuretics and sympatholytic differed statistically between the two groups. all these variables were higher in nephroangiosclerosis patients. conclusion: this study links biopsy proven hypertensive nephroangiosclerosis with metabolic features, hypertension intensity and duration, corroborating the idea that primary prevention of hypertension, postponing its initiation, a more intensive hemodynamic control (when hypertension is well established) and metabolic control of these patients have the potential to prevent hypertensive nephroangiosclerosis.
