Radiologia Brasileira , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-39842009000500009
Abstract: objective: to compare and quantify irradiated lung volumes using two-dimensional (2d) and three-dimensional (3d) conformal planning for radiotherapy in the treatment of lung cancer. materials and methods: 2d and 3d conformal radiotherapy plannings were performed for 27 patients with lung cancer. prescribed doses ranged from 45 to 66 gy. the analysis covered the doses to planning target volume (ptv), gross tumor volume (gtv) and lungs (lung volume receiving 20 gy or 30 gy - v20 and v30, respectively, and mean dose). the doses to adjacent organs at risk (spinal cord, esophagus and heart) were maintained below the tolerance limits. results: gtv ranged from 10.5 to 1,290.0 cm3 (mean, 189.65 cm3). on average, a total of 59.33 fields were utilized in the 2d planning and 75.65 fields in the 3d planning. lung volumes were significantly preserved (p < 0.05) with the 3d conformal planning in all the evaluated cases, with about 15% decrease in the irradiated lung volumes. lungs without tumor were most benefited from this technique. conclusion: 3d radiotherapy allowed a better sparing of the lungs, both in cases of early and advanced tumors. 3d radiotherapy should be used in the treatment of patients with lung cancer, even in cases of large tumors.

Abstract: background: the reduction in mortality from cardiovascular disease has been observed in brazil for years, attributed to a fall in risk factors, improved treatment and reduced hospital mortality. objective: to compare the mortality, the rate of hospitalization and hospital mortality in hospitals belonging to the brazilian public health system, for ischemic heart disease (ihd), cerebrovascular diseases (cvd) and heart failure (hf), in niterói, between 1998 and 2007. methods: we used the number of deaths and hospitalizations and mortality of residents in niterói for chapter ix of icd10 and specific causes available in datasus, in population aged 30 and older. the difference between the magnitude of the indicators was calculated for men and women taking the average of the first three year period less the average of the second three year period. results: there was drop in population mortality rates in men and women for all age groups, in three groups of causes and for chapter ix. the falling trend of rates decreased with age. for ihd there was a decrease in hospital mortality. for cvd and hf, there was an increase. the rates of hospitalization from ihd decreased, with exception of some ranges. conclusion: this study has clarified some aspects of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in niterói. the reduction in population and hospital mortality from ihd indicates that there is a better approach in this condition. increased mortality rate from cerebrovascular diseases and hf points to the need to give greater attention to the quality of hospital care for these groups of diseases.

Abstract: this study investigated the margin of safety of the cox-2e inhibitor, meloxicam on blood cells and gastrointestinal tract of dogs. after a clinical and laboratorial examination, the dogs were distributed in the following groups: i (placebo; n=3), ii (piroxicam: 1.0mg kg-1; n=5), iii (meloxicam: 0.2mg kg-1; n=5), iv (meloxican: 1.0mg kg-1; n=5) and v (meloxican: 2.0mg kg-1; n=5). the drugs were given orally for 16 days. on the 17th day the complete hemogram was repeated and the euthanasia and necropsy were then accomplished. in group i there were no significative alterations. in group ii, all the dogs showed moderate episodes of vomit and diarrhea. the blood-cell profile was not modified. two dogs had hematocrit and hemoglobin reduction. in the necropsy, hemorrhagic spots and moderate gastroduodenal lesions were seen. the microscopic analysis revealed the presence of gastritis and ulcerative enteritis. in group iii, four dogs (80%) showed vomit and diarrhea, without alteration in blood-cell profile. the microscopic analysis showed mild lesions in the gastric mucosa and hemorrhagic spots in the duodenum of four dogs. histology showed lesions suggesting mild gastroenteritis. in group iv, all the dogs (n=5) showed vomit and blood diarrhea. four of them showed anemia (p <0.05). four and five dogs, respectively, had hematocrit and hemoglobin reduction. in addition, there was a significant (p<0.05) leukocytosis, neutrophilia and linfopenia in 60% of the dogs. the necropsy showed hiperemia, hemorrhage and severe gastric ulcers in all the dogs. in the microscopic analyses, gastroenteritis ulcerative was present in all the animals. in group v, the dogs (n=5) had serious vomit, diarrhea and melena episodes. the dogs that bore the treatment (n=4) had anemia and leukocytosis with neutrophilia and linfopenia significatives (p<0.05). all the dogs had hematocrit and hemoglobin reduction. in the necropsy, hemorrhages and severe gastroduodenal ulceration were seen. the microscopic an

Abstract: We introduce a version of the Omori-Yau maximum principle which generalizes the version obtained by Pigola-Rigoli-Setti 21. We apply our method to derive a non-trivial generalization Jorge-Koutrofiotis Theorem 15 for cylindrically bounded submanifolds due to Alias-Bessa-Montenegro 2, we extend results due to Alias-Dajczer 5, Alias-Bessa-Dajczer 1 and Alias-Impera-Rigoli 6.

Abstract: this text assumes that the greatest volume of writings on popular education derives from the effort of several researchers to analyze and reflect about the practices of individual and collective subjects, aiming mainly to make subordinate groups aware of the causes of their respective poverty and lack of assistance. such writings usually also seek to overcome this condition by sending adults and youths to school and promoting actions within the popular culture, political training and community mobilizations. that, in many ways, subjects and groups construct their own forms of social cohesion, which are essentially production of meaning and knowledge, has usually not been taken into account. this happens expressively in the dances, entertainments and collective manifestations of popular religiosity. an example proposed in this text is that of the folia de reis (folly of the kings), when the agents of the ritual communicate these meanings and knowledge, even from home to home, when they visit annually the devoted inhabitants.

de Gamboa Tapias,Camila;
Estudios de Filosofía , 2010,
Abstract: abstract: the aim of this article is to offer an analysis of the peace policies of uribe vélez?s government and their effects on colombian democratic institutions and political culture. i will not evaluate directly if the said peace policies were successful in ending the internal political conflict of colombia, but rather to show that the link between a weak institutional democracy, such as colombia`s, the great influence of uribe vèlez`s personality in the political imaginary and his projects of democratic security and of a communitarian state, in so far as these projects were part of his peace policies. the central thesis i defend in this article is that precisely colombia`s democratic weakness enabled that a policy such as álvaro uribe`s in relation to peace was supported by a large part of the population, even though this policy instead of strengthening democracy weakened more its institutions and political culture.
