Abstract: it has been recently demonstrated that the major histocompatibility complex of class i (mhc i) expressed in the central nervous system (cns) does not only function as a molecule of the immune system, but also plays a role in the synaptic plasticity. the expression of mhc i influences the intensity and selectivity of elimination of synapses apposed to neurons that were subjected to lesion, besides influencing the reactivity of neighboring glial cells. mhc i expression and the degree of synaptic rearrangement and glial response after injury correlate with differences in the regenerative potential and functional recovery of isogenic mice strains. in this way, the new aspects regarding mhc i functions in the cns may guide further studies aiming at searching the involvement of mch i in neurologic disorders, as well as the development of new therapeutic strategies.
Therapeutic value of the genus Alpinia, Zingiberaceae
Victório, Cristiane P.;
Revista Brasileira de Farmacognosia , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-695X2011005000025
Abstract: plants containing bioactive substances have increasingly become the object of research studies, particularly those plants with therapeutic value. many species of the genus alpinia provide a variety of medicinal properties, such as, alpinia zerumbet (pers.) burtt et smith and a. purpurata (vieill) k. schum, which have a significant presence in brazil. these species have been commercialized in the food and cosmetic industries. however, their greatest importance arises from the medicinal properties of their essential oils containing flavonoids, terpenoids and kavalactones which have been used in folk medicine to treat, for example, arterial hypertension and inflammatory processes. in addition, such species are also used in multidisciplinary studies, including phytochemistry, ethnobotany and biology, indicating the key pharmacological role of this genus in everyday life. therefore, this work aims to present a bibliographic review of the genus alpinia and its significance in therapeutic applications.
Estado atual do problema da poliomielite no Município de S?o Paulo
Barbosa,Victório;
Revista de Saúde Pública , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89102006000500004
Abstract: the problem of poliomyelitis in the county of s?o paulo, brazil, was studied from 1933 to 1967. it emphasizes the period of 1962 to 1967, when the author analizes the relation between the variation in the incidence of the disease and the mass vaccination campaigns with the live virus vaccine attenuated accomplished at that time. based on the data presented he concludes that in 1967, when the morbidity rate by poliomyelitis was 0.6 for 100,000 inhabitantes, it was possible to get the control of that disease in the county of s?o paulo.
Estudo descritivo do suicídio no município de S?o Paulo (Brasil) - 1959 a 1968
Barbosa,Victório;
Revista de Saúde Pública , 1974, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89101974000100001
Abstract: based in the official data it was made an epidemiological retrospective descritive study about the mortality caused by suicide in the county of s. paulo, brazil. this study also includes the trends of some epidemiological characters for this couse of death, from 1959 to 1968, which are: exogenous causes, chronologic distribution, monthly distribution and distribution in sex and age.
O problema dos dados de estatística vital, sobretudo os dos óbitos e nascimentos vivos, no município de S?o Paulo: sugest?es para a sua solu??o
Barbosa,Victório;
Revista de Saúde Pública , 1967, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89101967000200005
Abstract: after characterizing the importance of vital statistics in public health when this last one plans, performs and estimates its sanitary and assistance activities, he comments these data in the county of s?o paulo, brazil. in his comments he shows that these data showed be collected, tabulated and analyzed according to the sanitary criterion, because only in that way can they be totally useful to sanitary officials. this does not happen in the county of s?o paulo. therefore, he suggests that in the future the health officials collect these data using that criterion and, in order to reach that goal - because of the reasons mentioned on this paper - he suggests that the s. paulo health centers service showed take charge of this task and - by the way - the first steps have already been taken.
Mortalidade "de fato" e "de direito" pelas divis?es político-administrativas do município de S?o Paulo, no quinqüênio 1959-1963: (algumas considera??es de interêsse epidemiológico e administrativo)
Barbosa,Victório;
Revista de Saúde Pública , 1969, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89101969000100009
Abstract: the author, for the first time among us, studies the death rate of children from one to four years old through the political-administrative divisions of the county of s?o paulo. after demonstrating that for this study the official data on deaths in the county, due to the different social, economical and sanitary conditions of each of these areas when compared to each other, are not adequate, proposes their substitution by corresponding "official" ones which he personally obtained through the examination of the death certificates in the capital. he presents below some aspects of the "official" death rate of children from one to four years old in the districts and sub-districts of our county, which take on epidemiological and administrative importance for our sanitarians, when these, through the use of this data, taken as a health indicator, must plan, schedule and execute their public health services in our municipality.

Anemia ancilostomótica: estudo da fisiopatologia
Maspes,Victório; Tamigaki,Michiru;
Revista de Saúde Pública , 1981, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89101981000600004
Abstract: seventeen ancylostomotic patients was studied and several hematological parameters: hemoglobin level, serum iron level and transferrin, erythrocyte count, hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume (vcm) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin (hcm) was established. this study also included the determination of several erythrokinetic data such as plasma iron turnover and red cell iron turnover. radioisothopic assays also permitted the estimation of blood volume and hemoglobin lost through feces, as well as the amount of iron absorbed from this hemoglobin. the authors also established the intensity of the patient's infection by egg and worm counts. the patients presented no evident nutritional abnormality. iron deficiency was the common factor found among those who had anemia, and it constitutes the physiopathologic basis of ancylostomotic anemia. the worms fixed on the intestinal epithelium suck the host's blood and this long-term blood spoliation produces anemia. the volume of blood lost is generally proportional to the degree of infection, but the fall in the patient's hemoglobin level was found to be independent of the spoliated blood volume. the great amount of iron which is absorved from the hemoglobin shed into the feces contributes to the later establishment of anemia as compared to that of other hemorrhages, as for instance, vaginal hemorrhages. the anemic patients were submitted to blood transfusions and thereafter presented an immediate although temporary clinical and laboratorial improvement. a steady clinical improvement, however, was established only after adequate worm therapy.

Abstract: brazil and portugal, for reasons of history and immigration, share a similar culture and language. this is a inter cultural research for to compare a specific motivational processes and psychological functions involved in volunteer work. the work of volunteers is also a very important activity in the social support of cancer patients and needs further evaluation in both of countries. the objective of this research was to identify the structure of volunteers' motivation that attends to cancer patients and to compare differences and similar situations. participants were 29 female volunteers from "liga portuguesa contra o cancro" and 21 female volunteers from "rede feminina de combate so cancer" in brazil. the mean age was to portugal 59.2y (sd=8.79), and 47.09 y (sd=11.0). the authors used the volunteer function inventory (vfi) developed by snyder et al., 1998, which proposes six personality/motivational categories for volunteer work. the results were analyzed by spss statistic software, using the t-student. the results showed that despite the similar language there are significant differences between brazilian volunteers and portuguese volunteers. the differences are not in motivational process but are in degree of these processes.
