On the presence of hepatic stellate cells in portal spaces
Fonseca, Yánnick de Oliveira;Lima, Camila Bio;Santos, Elisangela Trindade;Andrade, Zilton A;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02762005000300014
Abstract: previous studies in mice with hypervitaminosis a have demonstrated that fat-storing cells (hepatic stellate cells-hscs) participate in schistosomal granuloma fibrogenesis. the origin of such cells in portal areas, away from the disse spaces, was herein investigated. hscs were identified in frozen sections of the liver by means of sudan iii staining. they appeared as red-stained cells disposed along the sinusoids of normal mice, but were never found within portal spaces. however, in the chronically inflamed portal spaces of capillaria hepatica-infected mice, sudan iii-positive cells were frequently present among leukocytes and fibroblast-like cells. thus, there are no resident hscs in portal spaces, but their presence there in chronic inflammatory processes indicates that they are able to migrate from peri-sinusoidal areas in order to reach the portal areas.
Thalidomide failed to inhibit angiogenesis and fibrosis in hepatic schistosomiasis of the mouse
Lima, Camila Bio;Iglesias, Karen Brasil;Andrade, Zilton A;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02762007005000115
Abstract: the relationship between angiogenesis and fibrosis has been demonstrated in several pathological conditions, one of them being schistosomiasis. to observe whether suppression of angiogenesis would interfere with fibrosis, thalidomide, an anti-angiogenesis drug, was administered during 30 consecutive days to mice with experimental schistosomiasis. computerized morphometric measurements of fibrosis, and the counting of blood vessels from hepatic schistosomal lesions did not significantly differ when treated animals and their controls were compared at the end of the experiments. these rather unexpected results are presented under the understanding that they may be of interest during further studies on the anti-angiogenesis properties of thalidomide, and the relationship between angiogenesis and fibrosis.

Breast cancer treatment may have implications for women’s quality of life and social support, which refers to mechanisms through which interpersonal relationships protect people from the detrimental effects of stress. This study’s objective was to analyze evidence available in the literature concerning social support provided to women with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy. The Latin American and Caribbean Literature on Health Sciences (LILACS), PubMed, Web of Science, Psycinfo and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) databases were used to select the studies. The papers were pre-selected after reading titles and abstracts and ten papers were ultimately selected after fully reading the texts. The studies were summarized, while their methodological designs and results were noted. The analysis of the studies shows that social support can be provided to women with breast cancer, such as emotional, instrumental and informational support. It is apparent that emotional and instrumental support is provided in the first phase of the treatment. The main sources of support include the spouses, family members and friends. Spouses provide emotional support, but mainly provide instrumental support, while family members and friends are the most important source of emotional support. The conclusion is that emotional support greatly contributes to the health-disease continuum, favoring treatment adherence and creating opportunities for women to express their feelings, positively influencing the treatment.

Aims and Objectives: To analyze the evidence available in the literature on the stages during which upper limb lymphedema after mastectomy occurs. Background: Among the adverse effects of breast cancer treatment, lymphedema is the most prevalent. Design: Integrative literature review. Methods: The Latin American and Caribbean Literature on Health Sciences (Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde—LILACS), PubMed, and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) databases were used to select the pertinent studies. The identification data for these studies were summarized, and their methodological features and results were extracted. Results: Regarding the time elapsed since surgery, the highest prevalence of lymphedema corresponded to the late postoperative period, and regarding its severity, mild lymphedema was the most prevalent form. The prevalence was also the highest among the women who were subjected to radical mastectomy and radiotherapy. Conclusions: Many women who are undergoing treatment for breast cancer use strategies for the prevention and control of lymphedema of the upper limb following mastectomy. Relevance to Clinical Practice: The findings of the present study might inform future studies aiming to assess strategies that can be started in the immediate and late postoperative stages to detect lymphedema early and prevent the increase of its prevalence during the late postoperative period after mastectomy.

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To identify nursing diagnoses (ND) currently appearing in the NANDA-I taxonomy, validated in the area of cardiology in Brazil. METHODS: An integrative literature review, guided by the following question: what nursing diagnoses were validated in Brazil? Eleven works were analyzed: three content validations and eight clinical validations. RESULTS: The NDs validated were: activity intolerance, decreased cardiac output, spiritual distress, deficient knowledge, excessive fluid volume, ineffective airway clearance, ineffective peripheral tissue perfusion, fear, anxiety, and pain. The highlights were the production of the graduate programs in public institutions, the validation of defining characteristics, models of validation and the modified Fehring criteria for selection of experts . The clinical validation model was used for NDs of the psychobiological sphere; the content validation model was used mainly for NDs in the psychosocial and psychospiritual spheres. CONCLUSION: The knowledge produced can provide a basis for future studies on the relevance of the content of nursing outcomes in the evaluation of the effectiveness of nursing interventions in the country.

Abstract: Breast cancer is a heterogeneous and complex disease with different situations of threat to their patients, which can cause psychological discomfort, anxiety and a depressed state in women. The aim of this study was to analyze the performance of nursing to psychological repercussions on living with breast cancer. This is a descriptive and cross-sectional study with qualitative characteristics. It was conducted with professional nurses in Basic Health Units (UBS) in the municipality of Juazeiro do Norte-CE, Northeast of Brazil, located in the region of Cariri. The study began to be developed after the approval of the Research Ethics Committee, CAAE: 50809315.8. 0000.5624. Data collection occurred through a semi-structured interview. For the interpretation of the results, the technique of content analysis was used. The results showed that nurses realize that emotional support, care and assistance in coping, improve the construction of a good performance of the professional nurse. However, it is possible to realize the need for information and qualified assistance by multidisciplinary team to these patients and even their family members. It was identified as difficulty in assisting the denial of patient to start the treatment, but the facility is in the intimacy that the professional nurse can engage with the customer. It highlighted the care through dialogue and health education. And, finally, the nurse is aware of such importance of his/her role when supporting the patient. Thus, the improvement of professional assistance was evidenced as regards emotional support, reception, qualified listening, health education measures leading to self-knowledge, self-esteem and acceptance of the disease and the creation of bonds with the patients.

Abstract: samples of healthy leaves and galls induced by schizomyia macrocapillata maia on bauhinia brevipes vogel were submitted to routine techniques to investigate gall anatomy and development. pouch galls are induced on the abaxial surface of unfolded immature leaves, and become spheroid with long reddish hairs covering their external surface. galls occur isolated or coalesce when in larger numbers. gall development was divided into six phases: 1) initiation; 2) tissue re-arrangement; 3) tissue differentiation; 4) maturation; 5) growth phase; and 6) dehiscence. this last phase corresponds to gall senescence, which takes place just after the larva exits the chamber to pupate. an important developmental phase of tissue reorientation was recorded after the initiation phase. the presence of hyphae close to the covering layer characterizes this gall as an ambrosia gall and the feeding mode of the gall migde is discussed. few hyphae were found during the first developmental phases and fungi may play an important role during gall morphogenesis. neoformed trichomes may provide not only photoprotection but also protection against natural enemies and water loss. the neoformation of phloematic bundles suggests host manipulation and indicates the establishment of a deviating sink.
