Pesquisa Agropecuária Brasileira , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-204X2009001200013
Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate if progenies with erect and prostrate plant habit, from the same genetic pool, have the same yield potential. crosses between a prostrate and three erect cultivars were made yielding three populations up to the f5 generation. in this generation, erect and prostrate plants from each population were selected and evaluated in separate experiments. generations f5:6 f5:7 and f5:8 were evaluated for plant architecture, in a scale from 1 (erect) to 9 (prostrate) and for grain yield. the expected gain for selection for plant habit and the correlated response in grain yield, as well as gain from selection for grain yield with the correlated response in plant habit were estimated. the correlation between selection for better plant habit and grain yield was low and negative. it is possible to select common bean progenies simultaneously for yield and plant habit.

Ciência e Agrotecnologia , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-70542011000200018
Abstract: the objective of this study was to estimate the genetic variability for characters related with the germination rate and the capacity of the plants to occupy the ground quickly. ninety four lines from the common bean (phaseolus vulgaris l.) germoplasm from the universidade federal de lavras, differing in several characters as color, size and shape of the seeds were used. two experiments were carried out to evaluate the bean lines. the first was conducted at 120 days and the second 360 days after the beginning of storage (room temperature and humidity and under low light). percentage of germination (%g), emergency speed rate (esr) and dry matter (dm) were obtained. the variables were standardized and obtained the sum of the esr + dm. phenotypic, genetic and environmental correlations between all the characters were obtained and the expected gain was estimated with the selection and correlated response. both the g% and esr presented reduced levels in the evaluation at 360 days after seed storage in comparison with the evaluation at 120 days. it was possible to obtain the gain with the selection, for higher %g, esr and dm. the higher gain was obtained in the first experiment. among the lines evaluated, there are genetic sufficient variability to proceed the selection for germination and emergence. the lines jalo eep 558, pi-103 and cvii 39-24 were identified as the best for germination and emergence and the lines rp-2, bp-34 and esal 569 were those with smaller vigor.

Pesquisa Agropecuária Brasileira , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-204X2011000700007
Abstract: the objective of this work was to verify the implications of the origens of bean lines in the magnitude of the interaction with environment, and the environmental factors, which contribute most to this interaction. data from the value of cultivation and use trials of the biennia 2002/2003, 2005/2006, and 2007/2008, related to three cropping seasons in lavras and vi?osa counties, mg, brazil, were used. lines from universidade federal de lavras, universidade federal de vi?osa, and embrapa were evaluated. grain yield data were subjected to the variance analysis for each environment and to joint analyses per biennium, for each local, and for both localities simultaneously. coefficients of determination for each source of variation were determined, and stability analyses using ecovalence estimates were performed. interactions with lines had small share in the total variation, in the three biennia. despite the significance of genotype x local interactions for the total variation, its magnitud was not expressive. the location of the origin does not influence line stability when its environmental conditions are similar to those of the cultivation location, but influence the performance of lines when enviromental conditions differ greatly.

Advances in Microbiology (AiM) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/aim.2015.57052
Abstract: Aim: Shigella flexneri (S. flexneri) is a gram-negative enterobacterium responsible for severe intestinal end systemic infection in humans. The bacteria can reach the liver due to degeneration of the colonic epithelium. Hypoxia is present in many human diseases and can induce the expression of the transcription factor HIF-1alpha that may have a cell protective role. The influence of hypoxia and HIF-1alpha on bacterial infection, studied in this work, is unclear. Hypoxia inducible factor-1alpha (HIF-1alpha) is a transcription factor that acts as a master regulator of gene expression induced by hypoxia. Methods: We compared the ability of S. flexneri to invade rat hepatocytes in primary culture both in normoxic and hypoxic conditions. We evaluated TNF-alpha released by hepatocytes, apoptosis rate and HIF-1alpha expression by confocal microscopy as well as real time PCR technique. Results: We showed that S. flexneri invaded less hepatocytes previously submitted to 24 h hypoxia (6.5% O2) than those cultivated in normoxia (21% O2). S. flexneri also induced HIF-1α expression in hepatocytes, TNF-α secretion and apoptosis. Conclusion: a) Hypoxia alone was not a stimulus to TNF-α secretion, but induced cell apoptosis and HIF-1α expression; b) S. flexneri was able to invade rat hepatocytes and hypoxia apparently influenced significantly bacterial cell invasiveness; c)

Journal of Cancer Therapy (JCT) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/jct.2013.42A045
Abstract:

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a wide world prevalent hepatic disease, being the third greater cancer related death cause and most of the patients are not eligible for liver transplant. Palliative care is an option for, in average, half of hepatocellular carcinoma diagnosed patients and only recently the molecular targeted drug, Sorafenib, has been introduced among the therapeutic options for these patients. The physical pain comes frequently associated with progression disease (metastasis). Patients may be very fragile, with immobility, loss of interest in food and beverage intake, as well as weakness and drowsiness. Therefore, it is important that health professionals start planning care with patients and their relatives, before the end-stage disease. Informing the patient about therapeutic options guarantee a doctor patient relationship improvement and more belief on the health team.

Although performance measurement is widely recognized as an important health and safety (HS) management practice, it is usually implemented with a reductionist view, emphasizing quantitative data and not adopting an explicit HS philosophy. This study presents eight principles for designing HS performance measurement systems (HSPMS), which have, as a distinctive feature, the adoption of resilience engineering as their underlying paradigm. The use of the principles is illustrated by a case study of the HSPMS of a construction company, in which qualitative data collection techniques were privileged. A set of improvement opportunities was identified in the investigated HSPMS, pointing out how practical insights might be derived from using the principles. Furthermore, the case study provided a basis on which recommendations for assessing the use of the principles in existing HSPMS were drawn.

This article introduces guidelines for managing requirements during the building of the environment design process. A preliminary version of these guidelines was developed based on a literature review and an exploratory study. Such version was partially applied and enhanced in a case study of an urban project, where the environmental requirements were emphasized. Multiple sources of data were adopted in the case study, such as 12 hours of interviews, analysis of documents (e.g., environmental licenses) and observation of meetings related to the design process. The proposed guidelines have a holistic view of requirements management and involve all its phases along the design process. In addition, techniques that allow the control of change were indicated. The data available were also useful for assessing the guidelines from the perspective of their usability and effectiveness. Among the insights obtained from the case study, the contribution of the guidelines was evident in the elicitation, organization and visibility of environmental requirements, which benefits the decision-making.
