Understanding beyond language: perceiving meaning in reality
C.D. Scott
Koers : Bulletin for Christian Scholarship , 2011, DOI: 10.4102/koers.v76i4.415
Abstract: This article is an attempt to develop a counter-argument to the contention that meaning is bound by language. Locating itself within the realist ontology of language developed by Saint Anselm of Canterbury, it will be argued that language comprises representations of entities perceived both extra to the perceiver and through introspection. Thus, a language game cannot be a closed system in the sense that by its very existence representations of extralinguistic being are contained therein. If truth is defined as that which is the case, the task of the perceiver becomes apprehension of being beheld without the cloud imposed by symbols: representations are not what they represent, instead they serve as windows onto a view of what is. Following exploration of psychological studies on contemplation, it is argued that it is in desymbolised moments of attentive awareness of being that meaning, unfiltered by the representativeness of language (and indeed, other symbolic systems), can arise. It will be proposed that in contemplative traditions, being is not reduced in perception, and the moment of meaning comes to the fore in the engagement and encounter with being.

Abstract: the routine determination of psa has generated an important consequence: a really favourable migration of the tumour stage at the moment of diagnosis. it implies an exponential increase in the requirement of primary treatments with curative intention. radical prostatectomy with preservation of neuro-vascular bundles is the gold standard for the treatment of localized prostate cancer but laparoscopic and robotic surgery have arrived with force during last five years. these therapeutic approaches and the new emerging techniques (those interventions that are not routine practice in the prostate cancer) guided by images present a constant research activity. here, we perform a review of every possibility to treat the cancer of prostate.
Die vrae wat ons altyd wou gevra het
J. C.D. Augenstyn
South African Journal of Industrial Psychology , 1977, DOI: 10.4102/sajip.v0i0.292
Abstract: The development of industrial psychology as a discipline and personnel management as a profession is scrutinized against the background of the present economic situation. Unanticipated consequences of rapid growth in the field of personnel management are discussed and suggestions are made for improvement.

The brain decade in debate: VI. Sensory and motor maps: dynamics and plasticity
Das, A.;Franca, J.G.;Gattass, R.;Kaas, J.H.;Nicolelis, M.A.L.;Timo-Iaria, C.;Vargas, C.D.;Weinberger, N.M.;Volchan, E.;
Brazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-879X2001001200001
Abstract: this article is an edited transcription of a virtual symposium promoted by the brazilian society of neuroscience and behavior (sbnec). although the dynamics of sensory and motor representations have been one of the most studied features of the central nervous system, the actual mechanisms of brain plasticity that underlie the dynamic nature of sensory and motor maps are not entirely unraveled. our discussion began with the notion that the processing of sensory information depends on many different cortical areas. some of them are arranged topographically and others have non-topographic (analytical) properties. besides a sensory component, every cortical area has an efferent output that can be mapped and can influence motor behavior. although new behaviors might be related to modifications of the sensory or motor representations in a given cortical area, they can also be the result of the acquired ability to make new associations between specific sensory cues and certain movements, a type of learning known as conditioning motor learning. many types of learning are directly related to the emotional or cognitive context in which a new behavior is acquired. this has been demonstrated by paradigms in which the receptive field properties of cortical neurons are modified when an animal is engaged in a given discrimination task or when a triggering feature is paired with an aversive stimulus. the role of the cholinergic input from the nucleus basalis to the neocortex was also highlighted as one important component of the circuits responsible for the context-dependent changes that can be induced in cortical maps.
The burden of mental disorders: a comparison of methods between the Australian burden of disease studies and the Global Burden of Disease study
Vos,T.; Mathers,C.D.;
Bulletin of the World Health Organization , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0042-96862000000400004
Abstract: the national and victorian burden of disease studies in australia set out to examine critically the methods used in the global burden of disease study to estimate the burden of mental disorders. the main differences include the use of a different set of disability weights allowing estimates in greater detail by level of severity, adjustments for comorbidity between mental disorders, a greater number of mental disorders measured, and modelling of substance use disorders, anxiety disorders and bipolar disorder as chronic conditions. uniform age-weighting in the australian studies produces considerably lower estimates of the burden due to mental disorders in comparison with age-weighted disability-adjusted life years. a lack of follow-up data on people with mental disorders who are identified in cross-sectional surveys poses the greatest challenge in determining the burden of mental disorders more accurately.
Mamoplastia en plano dual ?Es la técnica de elección?
Lo Brutto,C.D.; álvarez,F.;
Cirugía Plástica Ibero-Latinoamericana , 2011, DOI: 10.4321/S0376-78922011000200003
Abstract: since 2004 we have been implementing the dual plane technique for augmentation mammoplasty in all our patients as the best one in primary augmentation mammoplasty, treatment of the capsular contracture and in the resolution of breast malformations, among which the tuberous breast was the most frequent one. this plane allows the prosthesis to stand simultaneously under and over the pectoralis major muscle. we considered 650 bilateral mammoplasties operated between january 2006 and december 2008 using smooth round implants in all cases (mentor?). the surgery was performed with the aid of local anesthesia as well as sedation. the complication rate was minimum and it was mostly produced by hematomas and breast asymmetries. in our experience the dual plane technique admits a few variations taking into account physiological, pathological and type of breast deformity aspects, with a high rate of success and low risk.
