Abstract:

Calcium hydroxide nanoparticles in aqueous suspensions (also called nanolime) were successfully employed in Cultural Heritage conservation thanks to the ability of favoring readhesion of the pictorial layer on original carbonatic substrates or allowing to a better superficial cohesion and protection of treated stones. In this work, we have synthesized nanolime particles in aqueous suspension by two different methods. The produced particles were characterized in the laboratory, in terms of structural and morphological features, by means of X-Ray diffraction powder (XRD) and by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), respectively. Nanoparticles were crystalline, regularly shaped, hexagonally plated and with side dimensions generally ranging from 300 nm to 30 nm or less. Crystal structure of nanolime particles directly in the aqueous suspension, has been also analyzed by synchrotron diffraction from X-ray synchrotron radiation (SR-XRD); data have been analyzed by means of the Rietveld method and we have investigated the structure of Ca(OH)2 particles in suspension in terms of cell parameters, atomic coordinates, bond lengths and angles.

Abstract: Combining recent and new inelastic neutron scattering data for the molecular cyclic cluster Cr8 produces a deep understanding of the low lying excitations in bipartite antiferromagnetic Heisenberg rings. The existence of the L-band, the lowest rotational band, and the E-band, essentially spin wave excitations, is confirmed spectroscopically. The different significance of these excitations and their physical nature is clearly established by high-energy and Q-dependence data.

Abstract: We report a high-$T$ Ga-NMR study in the kagome-based antiferromagnetic compound SrCr$_{9p}$Ga$_{12-9p}$O$_{19}$ ($.81\leq p\leq .96$), and present a refined mean-field analysis of the high T local NMR susceptibility of Cr frustrated moments. We find that the intralayer kagome coupling is $J=86(6)$ K, and the interlayer coupling through non-kagome Cr moments is $J^{\prime }=69(7)$ K. The $J^{\prime}/J=0.80(1)$ ratio confirms the common belief that the frustrated entity is a pyrochlore slab.

Abstract: what are the determinants of the commercial channel choice in the beef producers-processors transactions? the question refers to the coordination and production control problem associated to changes in consumer's awareness of specific attributes in food products. two contractual arrangements coexist in this transaction: direct-contracting and broker-induced transactions transaction cost economic offers helpful insights to understand the reason for the development and adaptations of different contractual arrangement moved by transaction cost economizing perspective. the empirical analysis is focused in the uruguayan beef agro-industrial system. analysis integrates (i) institutional and organizational changes in the beef industry; (ii) based on the analysis of the transaction dimensions (frequency, asset specificity and uncertainty) we address hypothesis of the determinants of the contractual arrangement in the beef producers-processors transaction; and (iii) we run a statistical test of the hypotheses based on a logit model. we used a panel data with producers-processors transaction from uruguayan agricultural bureau (77,000 transactions). we confirm the hypotheses of the determinants of the contractual arrangement choice. the probability of a transaction being aligned with the direct contractual arrangement increase in transaction with higher asset specificity (i.e., young steer), lower distance between the producer and the processor, and with higher frequency of transaction.

Abstract: The use of calcium hydroxide nanoparticles (nanolime) in hydro-alcoholic suspensions represents a good enhancement in particular in the conservation of stones and surfaces of interest in Cultural Heritage. In this work we have produced nanolime by using our alternative method of synthesis (based on the use of a surfactant agent in the original solution) and we have studied, for the first time, structural and morphological properties of the synthesized nanoparticles directly in hydro-alcoholic suspension by synchrotron X-ray diffraction technique and transmission electron micro-scope observations. The particles characterization was performed on suspensions synthesized by varying surfactant content in the synthesis procedure and the water/alcohol ratio, too. We have found that only pure and crystalline Ca(OH)2 particles produced during the synthesis procedure and they maintained stably in suspension. These particles were hexagonally plated and regularly shaped with side dimension ranging from 300 to 40 nm or less; they had a platy habit and they presented, particularly with high alcohol content in suspension, a preferred orientation along z-axis.
Peritoneal Dialysis-Related Peritonitis Due to Staphylococcus aureus: A Single-Center Experience over 15 Years

Abstract: Peritonitis caused by Staphylococcus aureus is a serious complication of peritoneal dialysis (PD), which is associated with poor outcome and high PD failure rates. We reviewed the records of 62 S. aureus peritonitis episodes that occurred between 1996 and 2010 in the dialysis unit of a single university hospital and evaluated the host and bacterial factors influencing peritonitis outcome. Peritonitis incidence was calculated for three subsequent 5-year periods and compared using a Poisson regression model. The production of biofilm, enzymes, and toxins was evaluated. Oxacillin resistance was evaluated based on minimum inhibitory concentration and presence of the mecA gene. Logistic regression was used for the analysis of demographic, clinical, and microbiological factors influencing peritonitis outcome. Resolution and death rates were compared with 117 contemporary coagulase-negative staphylococcus (CoNS) episodes. The incidence of S. aureus peritonitis declined significantly over time from 0.13 in 1996–2000 to 0.04 episodes/patient/year in 2006–2010 (p = 0.03). The oxacillin resistance rate was 11.3%. Toxin and enzyme production was expressive, except for enterotoxin D. Biofilm production was positive in 88.7% of strains. The presence of the mecA gene was associated with a higher frequency of fever and abdominal pain. The logistic regression model showed that diabetes mellitus (p = 0.009) and β-hemolysin production (p = 0.006) were independent predictors of non-resolution of infection. The probability of resolution was higher among patients aged 41 to 60 years than among those >60 years (p = 0.02). A trend to higher death rate was observed for S. aureus episodes (9.7%) compared to CoNS episodes (2.5%), (p = 0.08), whereas resolution rates were similar. Despite the decline in incidence, S. aureus peritonitis remains a serious complication of PD that is associated with a high death rate. The outcome of this infection is negatively influenced by host factors such as age and diabetes mellitus. In addition, β-hemolysin production is predictive of non-resolution of infection, suggesting a pathogenic role of this factor in PD-related S. aureus peritonitis.
Relation between arterial hypertension and hearing loss

Abstract: Objective: To verify the relationship between systemic arterial hypertension (SAH) and hearing loss in middle-aged patient. Method: This study was carried out in the period from January to December 2007. The research was composed by 392 patients of both genders, aged from 45 to 60 years old. Anamnesis and threshold tonal audiometry data were analyzed. Results: There was a significant association between SAH and hearing loss. Conclusion: The results showed an evident association between SAH and hearing loss, which requires the disclosure of a preventive process.

Abstract: Inelastic neutron scattering has been applied to the study of the spin dynamics of Cr-based antiferromagnetic octanuclear rings where a finite total spin of the ground state is obtained by substituting one Cr(III) ion (s = 3/2) with Zn (s = 0), Mn (s = 5/2) or Ni (s = 1) di-cations. Energy and intensity measurements for several intra-multiplet and inter-multiplet magnetic excitations allow us to determine the spin wavefunctions of the investigated clusters. Effects due to the mixing of different spin multiplets have been considered. Such effects proved to be important to correctly reproduce the energy and intensity of magnetic excitations in the neutron spectra. On the contrary to what is observed for the parent homonuclear Cr8 ring, the symmetry of the first excited spin states is such that anticrossing conditions with the ground state can be realized in the presence of an external magnetic field. Heterometallic Cr7M wheels are therefore good candidates for macroscopic observations of quantum effects.

Abstract: introduction: a unilateral hearing loss is characterized by decreased hearing in one ear. objective: to evaluate the benefit on the location after hearing the adaptation of hearing aids individual (ha) in individuals with unilateral hearing loss. method: a prospective study of 31 individuals aged between 18 and 75 years and both genders with unilateral hearing loss of various types and grades, answered a questionnaire to evaluate the location of the sound source, by using the "survey of hearing ability of the location of the sound source." the instrument was applied in two situations: without the use of ha and the use of hearing aids. results: patients with mild hearing loss and received a moderate score of 3.35 with use of hearing aids and hearing loss, severe and profound absence of an improvement of 3.05 1.39 and 1.38 respectively. conclusion: benefits were obtained with the use of hearing aids on the auditory localization in subjects with unilateral hearing loss, emphasizing the importance of the use of amplification.
