Psicologia: Reflex?o e Crítica , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-79722003000300004
Abstract: this paper analyses the university students' social representations of human rights involvement and the relationship of these representations with the students' political positioning. a study carried out with 400 students of jo?o pessoa shows that the representation of human rights involvement can be analyzed from 4 dimensions: personal-abstract, personal-concrete, governmental-abstract and governmental-concrete. on the whole, students regard their real involvement in human rights is superior to the brazilian government involvement. however, in the abstract order of how it should be, they consider that enforcing the rights is government responsibility. it is also shown that there is a positive relationship between students' political activism and human rights involvement. finally, as far as political parties are concerned, it is observed that political sympathy with pmdb correlates positively with the belief that the brazilian government is really concerned with human rights, whereas political sympathy with pt has negative correlation with that belief.

Camino, Cleonice;Camino, Leoncio;Pereira, Cícero;Paz, Márcia;
Estudos de Psicologia (Natal) , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-294X2004000100004
Abstract: this article analyzes the representation university students make of their own involvement and the involvement of the government with human rights (hr); it also analyzes the relationship between this representation and the psychosocial variables and compares some moral values transmitted by rede globo de televis?o (the most influential tv channel in brazil) to the university students' representation. a study based on the psychosocial theory of the social representations was carried out with 93 university students from ufpb and uepb in order to check the students' representation about hr. the results revealed that the representation of the involvement has four dimensions - the abstract-personal, the concrete-personal, the abstract-governmental and the concrete-governmental. it was found that the students' commitment with individual rights is stronger than with societal rights; the representation of the involvement with hr is mainly grounded on party affiliations and on the participation of these students in socio-political activities. there is also a similarity between the prevailing moral values of the tv programs under examination and the type of article of the universal declaration of human rights the students support more strongly.

Lacerda, Marcos;Pereira, Cícero;Camino, Leoncio;
Psicologia: Reflex?o e Crítica , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-79722002000100018
Abstract: this paper analyses, in terms of social representations, the way university students express their prejudice against homosexuals and how this prejudice relates to explanations concerning homosexuality. questionnaires were used with 220 students of a public university in jo?o pessoa city. the results led to a classification of the students into three different groups: flagrantly-prejudiced, subtly-prejudiced and non-prejudiced. the analysis of the social anchorage of the students' type of prejudice revealed that the flagrantly-prejudiced group opposed the psycho-social explanations (typical of women and psychology students), more strongly adhering to ethical-moral and religious explanations (characteristic of engineer students). the non-prejudiced were students of psychology and adhered to psycho-sociological explanations, whereas the subtly-prejudiced explained homosexuality in terms of biological and psychological causes (explanations typical of medical students and women).

Pereira, Cícero;Camino, Leoncio;Costa, Joseli Bastos da;
Estudos de Psicologia (Natal) , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-294X2004000300013
Abstract: this study shows that the psychosocial values questionnaire is an adequate instrument to measure value systems of university students. the results of a confirmatory factor analysis (n = 300) show the conceptual validity of the structure and content that organizes students' value systems: materialist, religious, hedonist and post-materialist. the results also confirm that these value systems are positively correlated. the discussion emphasizes the societal nature of the values systems and the validity of the psychosocial values questionnaire to measure these systems.

Psicologia: Reflex?o e Crítica , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-79722001000100015
Abstract: this paper presents two empirical studies analysing the relationships between individual's value systems and democratic attitudes. the subjects were university students in jo?o pessoa (brazil). in the first study (n=350) we investigated the implicit dimensions present in both content and structure of student's value systems. the data were analysed from the framework of schwartz′s theory of values and inglehart′s distinction between materialist and post-materialist values. in the second study (n=200) those results were replicated and were also correlated to student's democratic attitudes. the main results were twofold. first, religious values were negatively correlated to democratic attitudes and second the post-materialist values were positively correlated to those attitudes. these findings were discussed pointing out the real meaning of democracy for those subjects.

Abstract: this work is a study on the articulation of the analysis levels of university students' value systems. the results (n=406) show 4 systems underlying the organization of the students' value systems: materialist; hedonist; religious; post-materialist. the analyses of the convergences between values systems and motivacional types of schwartz's theory showed that there are correlations between materialist and self-enhancement values, between hedonist system and opening to change values types, between religious and conservation values, and between post-materialism and self-transcendence motivational value type. the discussion emphasizes the societal nature of the values system connecting their sources to social ideologies.
