Abstract: the object of this study is the production of mental health service. it is composed by working processes organized to improve the object of the health care, through institutions and knowledge, technology and health practices. the aim of this study was to describe the conceptions of the workers of different mental health services on the production of these services. the workers took a specialization course in mental health technologies, financed by the brazilian ministry of health. data were collected during a class period, with previous participant?s authorization. among the workers of the psychiatry hospitals, mental health ambulatories and health care units, the conception of the health illness-process was multifactorial and individual centred. at the psychosocial attention center (pac) the conception appeared to be similar to the theory of the social determination. the object of the assistance was the sick person or even the illness symptom, but pac workers linked the sick person to his "social net". the challenge is to understand the social determination of the mental health-illness process and to redefine working process, in order to act not only on curing but also on preventing mental health problems.

O objetivo foi descrever as concep es de servi os de saúde mental de trabalhadores de diferentes servi os de saúde mental do município de S o Paulo, que fizeram o curso de especializa o em tecnologias em saúde mental. Interface - Comunica??o, Saúde, Educa??o , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1414-32832007000300014
Abstract: this paper assumes that the health services' responses to health needs were affected by the regulation of the brazilian public health system. its objective is to capture the health-service trends found in scientific publications. among the 73 publications selected from on-line databases, 66 (90.4%) did not mention the concept of health needs. those that did had a reflective stance toward the subject. health needs as defined in those articles were similar for all individuals, not considering them as members of a social class, a circumstance that defines health-needs characteristics. the results of this study are worrisome because health care delivery has been emphasizing sickness and reinforcing classification practices, rather than enabling emancipating praxis.

Abstract: this study focused on the health needs of a population covered by a primary healthcare center (phc) in the city of s?o paulo, brazil. the overall objective was to investigate the perceived health needs as the object of health work. the study thus identified and analyzed what residents recognize as health needs, as well as what the phc workers grasp as the object. the phc workers and local residents were the research subjects. a semi-structured interview was used for data collection and thematic analysis for grasping the reality. the empirical categories identified were: need for state presence, social reproduction needs, and need for political participation recognized by local residents as health needs. the analysis indicated that the phc work has operated without recognizing the residents' needs. overcoming such gaps may be possible if and to the extent that work processes are implemented according to the recognition of health needs, respecting the concept of determination in the health-disease process and the right to health as a political gain.

Abstract: objective: to identify the different positions of young students in relation to expressions about contemporary social values. methods: a descriptive study using a quantitative approach, we used a spreadsheet to assign the positions of 229 students between 15 and 19 years, participants in 29 focus groups conducted in ten schools in four dissimilar regions in the city of santo andré (sp), brazil. young people positioned themselves regarding the agreement - doubt or disagreement - over a set of value-laden expressions sorted and discussed in groups. these positions were analyzed according to their frequencies. results: first, we identified a certain degree of uniformity of viewpoints, as a consequence of generational experience of assimilation of values disseminated in society; on the other hand, heterogeneity was evidenced that exposed inherent contradictions of the different social contexts surrounding these youths. conclusion: we identified values that differed among youths pertaining to different social groups while encountering others that did not. there was more heterogeneity than homogeneity in opinions about the evaluative expressions used.

Abstract: this paper aimed to analyze the concepts that guide practices of harm reduction (hr) in brazil. forty six national publications were selected from 1994 to 2006, specially from lilacs database. from the central categories - object (what you want to transform) and subject (for whom the actions are directed), the analysis showed that the hr is very heterogeneous, with the unity object/subject represented by different equations: dependence-dependent; transmissible disease-drugusers of the marginalized and excluded populations; consumption-user of drugs; residents-ways of life of a particular "community", social risks and the general public; and production, trade and consumption of drugssocial class. it can be concluded that the different trends of hr have been built in brazil as answers to problems related to the complex phenomenon of drug use, and mean the involvement of several areas and the extension of theoretical debate.

Abstract: the aim of this article is to analyze how knowledge about drug abuse and youth has been incorporated into the social practices of workshop participants to drive discussion and awareness, and how they have become tools for workers in social institutions over the past three years. thirteen interviews were carried out based on a script with questions on: topics discussed and strategies used, contributions for personal and professional development, and problem situation analyses. the results show that the participants develop practices at work and in life that are characterized by their understanding of the intertwined network of causality in drug abuse, which involves reflections on drug commodification, problems arising from the criminalization and from the labor market. contemporary values and difficulties both family and school have come up against in the socialization process of young people were also addressed. in this sense, care was seen in composing discourses that do not blame the users. preference is given to an attitude of understanding and dialogue in the face of the problem situations posed. although discourses oscillate, between the hegemonic and critical forms of capturing the problem, one can see that the more general understanding refers to the complex system of psychoactive drug production, consumption, and distribution and to the search for enhanced social solutions for the issue. the social practices that are developed, however, showed the absence of public policies to face the matter
