The Flavonoid Luteolin Worsens Chemical-Induced Colitis in NF-κBEGFP Transgenic Mice through Blockade of NF-κB-Dependent Protective Molecules

Abstract: Background The flavonoid luteolin has anti-inflammatory properties both in vivo and in vitro. However, the impact of luteolin on experimental models of colitis is unknown. Methodology/Principal Findings To address the therapeutic impact of luteolin, NF-κBEGFP transgenic mice were fed a chow diet containing 2% luteolin- or isoflavone-free control chow (AIN-76), and acute colitis was induced using 3% dextran sodium sulfate (DSS). Additionally, development of spontaneous colitis was evaluated in IL-10?/?;NF-κBEGFP transgenic mice fed 2% luteolin chow diet or control chow diet. Interestingly, NF-κBEGFP transgenic mice exposed to luteolin showed worse DSS-induced colitis (weight loss, histological scores) compared to control-fed mice, whereas spontaneous colitis in IL-10?/?;NF-κBEGFP mice was significantly attenuated. Macroscopic imaging of live resected colon showed enhanced EGFP expression (NF-κB activity) in luteolin-fed mice as compared to control-fed animals after DSS exposure, while cecal EGFP expression was attenuated in luteolin-fed IL-10?/? mice. Interestingly, confocal microscopy showed that EGFP positive cells were mostly located in the lamina propria and not in the epithelium. Caspase 3 activation was significantly enhanced whereas COX-2 gene expression was reduced in luteolin-fed, DSS-exposed NF-κBEGFP transgenic mice as assessed by Western blot and immunohistochemical analysis. In vitro, luteolin sensitized colonic epithelial HT29 cells to TNFα-induced apoptosis, caspase 3 activation, DNA fragmentation and reduced TNFα-induced C-IAP1, C-IAP2 and COX-2 gene expression. Conclusions/Significance We conclude that while luteolin shows beneficial effects on spontaneous colitis, it aggravates DSS-induced experimental colitis by blocking NF-κB-dependent protective molecules in enterocytes.
Large Longitudinal Magnetoelectric Coupling in NiFe2O4-BaTiO3 Laminates

Abstract: In contrast to the Pb-based magnetoelectric laminates (MELs), we find in the BaTiO3 and NiFe2O4 laminates (number of layers n = 5-25) that the longitudinal magnetoelectric (ME) voltage coefficient Alpha E33 becomes much larger than the transverse one due to preferential alignment of magnetic moments along the NiFe2O4 plane. Moreover, upon decreasing each layer thickness down to 15 um, we realize enhanced Alpha E33 up to 18 mV/ (cm Oe) and systematic increase of the ME sensitivity in proportion to n to achieve the largest in the Pb-free MELs (400*10^-6V/Oe), thereby providing pathways for tailoring ME coupling in mass-produced, environment friendly laminates.
Metabolic syndrome is associated with erosive esophagitis

Abstract: AIM: To clarify whether insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome are risk factors for erosive esophagitis.METHODS: A case-control study was performed using the database of the Kangbuk Samsung Hospital Medical Screening Center.RESULTS: A total of 1679 cases of erosive esophagitis and 3358 randomly selected controls were included. Metabolic syndrome was diagnosed in 21% of the cases and 12% of the controls (P < 0.001). Multiple logistic regressions confirmed the association between erosive esophagitis and metabolic syndrome (Odds ratio, 1.25; 95% CI, 1.04-1.49). Among the components of metabolic syndrome, increased waist circumference, elevated serum triglyceride levels and hypertension were significant risk factors for erosive esophagitis (all P < 0.01). Furthermore, increased insulin resistance (Odds ratio, 0.91; 95% CI, 0.85-0.98) and fatty liver, as diagnosed by ultrasonography (Odds ratio, 1.39; 95% CI, 1.20-1.60), were also related to erosive esophagitis even after adjustment for a series of confounding factors.CONCLUSION: Metabolic syndrome and increased insulin resistance are associated with an increased risk of developing erosive esophagitis.
Theoretical Modeling of ME effect at Low frequency and Resonance Frequency for Magnetoelectric Laminates with Anisotropic Piezoelectric Properties

Abstract: A new theory is developed for the magnetoelectric (ME) coupling in a symmetric 2-2 ME laminate having a representative piezoelectric crystal (PMN-PT) particularly with anisotropic piezoelectric properties. Considering the average field method, the theoretical expressions for the transverse ME voltage coefficients at low and resonance frequencies were derived. The theory takes into account the anisotropic properties of the piezoelectric materials providing two different expressions of transverse ME voltage coefficients for different in-plane magnetic fields both at low and resonance frequencies. The numerical simulations show multiple resonance frequencies and phase differences between transverse ME voltage coefficients showing good agreement with the experimental results. Our theory should be generally applicable to other ME laminates with any piezoelectric with anisotropic piezoelectric coefficients.
Pre-operative predictive factors for gallbladder cholesterol polyps using conventional diagnostic imaging

Abstract: AIM: To determine the clinical data that might be useful for differentiating benign from malignant gallbladder (GB) polyps by comparing radiological methods, including abdominal ultrasonography (US) and computed tomography (CT) scanning, with postoperative pathology findings.METHODS: Fifty-nine patients underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy for a GB polyp of around 10 mm. They were divided into two groups, one with cholesterol polyps and the other with non-cholesterol polyps. Clinical features such as gender, age, symptoms, size and number of polyps, the presence of a GB stone, the radiologically measured maximum diameter of the polyp by US and CT scanning, and the measurements of diameter from postoperative pathology were recorded for comparative analysis.RESULTS: Fifteen of the 41 cases with cholesterol polyps (36.6%) were detected with US but not CT scanning, whereas all 18 non-cholesterol polyps were observed using both methods. In the cholesterol polyp group, the maximum measured diameter of the polyp was smaller by CT scan than by US. Consequently, the discrepancy between those two scanning measurements was greater than for the non-cholesterol polyp group.CONCLUSION: The clinical signs indicative of a cholesterol polyp include: (1) a polyp observed by US but not observable by CT scanning, (2) a smaller diameter on the CT scan compared to US, and (3) a discrepancy in its maximum diameter between US and CT measurements. In addition, US and the CT scan had low accuracy in predicting the polyp diameter compared to that determined by postoperative pathology.
Efficient Intra Mode Search Algorithms Based on Image Region Correlation for Inter-Frames in H.264/AVC Video

Abstract: Fast intra mode determination schemes based on an image region correlation and the Rate-Distortion (RD) cost are proposed for interframes in the H.264/AVC video standard. With the inter mode search procedure with 7 block types, an intra mode search causes a significant increase in the complexity and computational load for an inter-frame. At first, we adopt a Macro-Block (MB) tracking scheme to obtain the most correlated image region in the reference picture. To reduce the computational load of the intra mode search at the inter-frame, the Rate-Distortion (RD) costs of a tracked MB or image region for the current MB is used and we propose adaptive thresholding algorithms for skipping the intra mode search. For the IPPP sequence type, the overall encoding time can be reduced up to 52% based on comparative analysis of experimental results with JM reference software.
Portfolio Optimization Modelling with R for Enhancing Decision Making and Prediction in Case of Uganda Securities Exchange  [PDF]

Abstract: Portfolio Optimization involves choosing proportions of assets to be held in a portfolio, so as to make the portfolio better than any other. In this research, we use a software for statistical computing R to analyse the performance of portfolio optimization models which include; Markowitz’s Mean-Variance (MV) model, the VaR model, and Konno and Yamazaki’s Mean-Absolute Deviation (MAD) model. We start by analysing multi-asset data for the major indexes in the world followed by historical data of 16 constituent shares listed on the Uganda Securities Exchange (USE) covering 6.5 years. The paper then tests the stock performance of the models using R. We found that GREXP bonds dominated the world market as they accounted for more than 60% of the Maximum Diversified Portfolio (MDP). For the USE, we generated more risk measures like volatility, Sharpe Ratio (SR), Risk Parity (RP), Expected Shortfall (ES) or CVaR which we used to assess stock performance. UMEME, NVL, BATU, JHL, DFCU, EBL, EABL, KCB, SBU and CENT were the best-performing stocks. By understanding the performance of portfolio optimization models in R, Ugandan investors will develop a better view of the latest performance of the stocks listed on the USE. This will help them to decide on which stocks to include in their investment portfolios, thus prevent wrong investment decisions.
Structural Evolution of Polyacrylonitrile Fibers in Stabilization and Carbonization  [PDF]

Abstract: The effect of structural evolution polyacrylonitrile (PAN) on mechanical properties was investigated in stabilization and carbonization. PAN spun fibers were stabilized in a convection oven with a constant tension for various times at 250℃. Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and gel fraction results suggested that intra and intermolecular stabilization reactions occurred simultaneously. X-ray diffractograms revealed a disruption of crystalline structure and an appearance of pre-graphitic structure of PAN fibers due to stabilization. These structural changes by stabilization resulted in the significant decrease of tensile properties of fibers. In Raman spectra with heat treated fibers from 400℃ up to 1200℃, the intensity ratio of the D to G bands (ID/IG) decreased as heat treatment temperature increased, indicating an increase of basal plane of graphitic layer of heat treated fibers. Tensile strength of heat treated fibers at 1200℃ was found to be as high as 2.2 GPa.

Adaptive Distortion-Based Partial Distortion Search for Fast Motion Estimation

Abstract: Block motion estimation with full search is computationally complex. To reduce this complexity, different methods have been proposed, including partial distortion, which can reduce the computational complexity with no loss of image quality. We propose a Distortion-based Partial Distortion Search (DPDS) based on the magnitude of distortion and adaptive update of the matching order. We calculate absolute differences for all pixels in the predicted block point. Pixels are then sorted by the amount of distortion in a descending order for the matching process, which produces a scanning map. The Sum of the Absolute Differences (SAD) of other candidate positions is then computed from this matching order. We also use an update of the scanning map by checking the increase in the number of absolute differences for the SAD value. The proposed DPDS algorithm improves the computational efficiency, compared with the original PDS scheme, because the accumulated value of the absolute pixel differences can rapidly reach the current minimum SAD value. The proposed algorithm is 4-13 times faster than the full search method with the same visual quality.
