Clarisse Halpern, Bruno Halpern
Open Journal of Business and Management (OJBM) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/ojbm.2018.61011
Abstract:
The objective of this research was to investigate how the decision of Brazilian university students to enroll (or not) in internships’ selection processes would be affected by the form and content of the ads published in social media. Thus, a qualitative research was carried out through a multiple-case study. Data were collected in semi-structured interviews via Skype, as well as direct observations of eight individuals. The category?Diversions presented the most relevant results shedding light as to how the interviewees’ focus was shifted while searching for internship positions during their interviews. The title refers to how distractions make students stray from their intended search for internship positions. Instead, social media exerts a sort of magnetism that is more powerful than recruiting posts and ads, attracting their attention away from internship openings search, making them secondary. In conclusion, diversions were found to become obstacles for undergraduate students when applying for internship positions online.
Combinations of drugs in the Treatment of Obesity
Bruno Halpern,Eduardo S. L. Oliveira,André M. Faria,Alfredo Halpern,Maria Edna de Melo,Cintia Cercato,Marcio C. Mancini
Pharmaceuticals , 2010, DOI: 10.3390/ph3082398
Abstract: Obesity is a chronic disease associated with excess morbidity and mortality. Clinical treatment, however, currently offers disappointing results, with very high rates of weight loss failure or weight regain cycles, and only two drugs (orlistat and sibutramine) approved for long-term use. Drugs combinations can be an option for its treatment but, although widely used in clinical practice, very few data are available in literature for its validation. Our review focuses on the rationale for their use, with advantages and disadvantages; on combinations often used, with or without studies; and on new perspectives of combinations being studied mainly by the pharmaceutical industry.

Revista do Colégio Brasileiro de Cirurgi?es , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-69912010000500004
Abstract: objective: to evaluate the outcome of the surgical treatment of morbidly obese patients by adjustable gastric banding (abg) followed in a multidisciplinary clinic. methods: we studied 20 patients with bmi ranging from 36.6 to 72 kg/m2 (x = 47.51 + / - 6.1) and aged between 36 to 60 years, undergoing placement of agb. preoperative comorbidities were hypertension (nine), type ii diabetes (four), severe sleep apnea (one), hypertriglyceridemia (four) and severe orthopedic problems (three). in the post-operative period patients were followed at a multidisciplinary clinic (surgeon, endocrinologist, psychiatrist and nutritionist). in the first six months, the orientation was of monthly visits for band adjustments and nutritional counseling. after six months the visits occurred every two or three months, as needed. results: the operative time ranged from 40 to 180 minutes; hospital stay varied from one to ten days (x = 36 hours). two patients required surgical reintervention for late complications: a rotation of the portal and a band superior slippage. follow-up ranged from 28 to 36 months. the average weight loss was 29.26 kg +/- 8.8, or 24.37% +/- 6.1 of the original weight and 49.16% +/- 11.3 overweight. the average bmi ranged from 47.51 to 34.88. there was global improvement of comorbidities, markedly in the patients with greater weight loss. conclusion: the results were satisfactory for most patients on the variables weight loss and improvement of comorbidities.
Participa??o do zinco na resistência à insulina
Marreiro, Dilina N.;Geloneze, Bruno;Tambascia, Marcos A.;Lerário, Antonio C.;Halpern, Alfredo;Cozzolino, Silvia M.F.;
Arquivos Brasileiros de Endocrinologia & Metabologia , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27302004000200005
Abstract: this review reports the etiological aspects of insulin resistance as well as the participation of zinc in this process. zinc participates in the metabolic pathways involving protein synthesis, and the metabolism of carbohydrate, lipid and nucleic acid. this element has been associated with the interaction between hormones and their receptors and to the improvement in the post-receptor stimulus. in vitro studies show that insulin may form a complex with zinc improving the solubility of this hormone in the pancreatic b cells and also increasing the binding ability of insulin to its receptor. regarding obesity and insulin resistance, alterations in zinc concentration and distribution in tissues, as well as improvement in sensitivity to insulin after supplementation with this element, have been detected. thus, the metabolic role of zinc in the insulin resistance syndrome should be further investigated having in mind that this element may contribute to the control of the usual metabolic alterations present in obese patients.
The Role of the Researcher When Using the Socio-Anthropological Method to Understand the Phenomenon of Alcoholism  [PDF]

Open Journal of Social Sciences (JSS) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/jss.2015.35011
Abstract: The consumption of alcoholic beverages during the Brazilian Armed Forces working hours was studied for the first time only recently, by investigating the patients of the Center for Chemical Dependency (CEDEQ) of the Brazilian Navy. This was possible mainly because one of the researchers was the chief of this clinic and one of the psychologists of the therapeutic groups. This article discussed methodological aspects related to the role of the researcher when conducting a qualitative research through a dense ethnography in CEDEQ over four years, with participant observation in two treatment groups for 24 sessions. Additionally, a multiple case and explanatory study was carried on, through individual and 13 open-ended interviews. The following findings will be discussed: 1) the social construction of truth and accuracy of the oral statements; 2) reflexivity, transparency, and familiarity of the researcher with the field; 3) impression management, standardized behavior, and resistance to perform the research. The use of the qualitative method requires the assessment of the researcher’s role. The anthropological eye helped to deal with a delicate theme that was hard to access: drinking during the military working journey. We found out that the organization had an ambivalent position: though the Brazilian Navy created this specialized clinic and allowed this research, at the same time this organization was not open to discuss inebriation on board, strictly authorizing the investigation of the patients. This was possible mainly because of the researcher’s social and hierarchical position as an officer, as the chief of the CEDEQ, and for being one of the therapists of the groups. We concluded that this position created an obstacle to apply effective measures to protect the military contingency.

Abstract: this paper presents a set of descriptions and interpretations ofthe ápe paraguay experience, a political-communicational project carried outin argentina and paraguay by a group of paraguayan migrants since 2008 which has gradually grown due to the inclusion of members from other parts of the world. it is their political statement, their website content and also their internet radio broadcasting and other initiatives using and not using information and communication technologies that has led us to put forward a number of concerns about the way in which citizenship is currently produced and the political nature of the organization of paraguayan migrants in different parts of the planet these concerns have allowed us to link the organizational aspects of contemporary paraguayan migrants with the production and demand of emerging identities and the use of media as a form of construction of legitimate subjects there where the history of paraguay has created remoteness and punishment. in short, from some contributions of cultural anthropology and the field of communication sciences, we are trying to recover some initiatives for the production of citizenship that bring to light both the inner conflictivityof the migration processes and the migrants′ communicational struggle in their demands for the access to rights.
Neoliberalismo y migración: paraguayos en Argentina en los noventa
Halpern, Gerardo;
Política y cultura , 2005,
Abstract: this paper analyzes the role of the state in devising, activating, and managing the interpretative frameworks applicable to the “paraguayan immigrants” who live in argentina, as a product generated, executed, administered, etc., by the legal and labor spheres, which are essential in understanding the positions adopted by specific agents in the social arena and their consequent responses. these positions arise from within power relationships in which the agent par excellence is the state, which responds, throughout history and in a range of circumstances, to the needs of capital in its relations with labor.

Trabajo y sociedad , 2012,
This paper presents a set of descriptions and interpretations ofthe ápe Paraguay experience, a political-communicational project carried outin Argentina and Paraguay by a group of Paraguayan migrants since 2008 which has gradually grown due to the inclusion of members from other parts of the world.
