Abstract: the aim of this paper is to present a discussion about the supposed loss of authenticity and tradition in samba schools and provide a contribution to organizational analysis considering the peculiar characteristics of this type of organization which highlights the idea of ??borderless organizations. despite being widely studied in anthropology and sociology, these organizations have failed to gain the attention of the field of business administration. these organizations are treated by some authors as entities that have undergone major changes, and therefore have lost their authenticity and tradition as a result of what has became known as commodification / modernization of carnival, invasion beyond the call of the middle class. we argue that the "mercantilization / modernization" of carnival and the "invasion" of the middle class has not led to the alleged loss of authenticity and tradition because the marketing of carnival has been present in brazil since the early twentieth century and the relationship between elite and popular culture is not something new. we take the position that "tradition" and "modernity" are neither dichotomous nor exclusionary. we point out that a study of organizational practices would be an interesting way to overcome the dichotomies commonly used in studies of samba schools, which actually take shape as organizations without borders.

Abstract: though expatriation has become common in today's corporate world and the majority of expatriates are self-initiated rather than assigned by business organizations to work abroad, many authors have treated these two groups of expatriates (self-initiated and organizational) as homogeneous. the objective of this study was to differentiate, conceptually and empirically, self-initiated and organizational expatriates, by examining differences in the adaptation of individuals from both groups in brazil. the study was qualitative, conducted through semi-structured interviews with 21 organizational and 24 self-initiated expatriates living in brazil, using content analysis. the theoretical perspective adopted in this study was the model of transcultural adaptation of expatriates of black, mendenhall and oddou (1991). the results emphasize the importance of a conceptual and empirical separation of the two types of expatriates, as they showed different characteristics in the three dimensions of transcultural adaptation used in this study. for human resources professionals that work with expatriation processes, the authors suggest that self-initiated expatriates are an advantageous option for the creation of a global workforce, since they tend to adapt better than the organizational ones. for academics, the authors recommend that both types of expatriates be considered in future research, given their specificities

Abstract: this study aimed to verify and analyze empirically the relationship among the individual, group and organizational learning. data were collected in a brazilian plastics industry, with 46 respondents from a total of 88 employees (52%). data analysis occurred through structural equation modeling with estimation by partial least squares (partial least squares - path modeling), in which the constructs were measured as latent variables of second order. the results were compared with those obtained in other contexts, namely: hospital (chan, 2003) and bank institution (bido et al., 2008). as main result, we observed that the three constructs are correlated, but the correlation between tl (team learning) and ol (organizational learning) was higher in the three studies. one explanation for this result may be due to the perception of respondents that the behavior of the team, really, is the "gateway" to the ol (organizational learning). at the end of the work, some limitations and directions for continuing the research are pointed.

Abstract: introduction: in brazil, about 19.000 of hiv cases have been attributed to injection drug use, with the seroprevalence among such samples ranging from 25% to 65%. the aim of this study is to compare drug using and hiv risk behaviors among injection cocaine users in rio de janeiro and porto alegre. methods: comparative analysis of cross-sectional data from two studies conducted in porto alegre and rio de janeiro. 250 respondents who reported using cocaine by injection in the six months prior to interview were interviewed using nida′s rba (risk behavior assessment) and participated in voluntary hiv testing. results: there were no statistically significant differences between the two samples in terms of demographic characteristics, with the exception of mean age (31 years in rio de janeiro and 28 years in porto alegre). the porto alegre sample reported more frequent cocaine injection and more injecting risk behaviors. the rio de janeiro sample displayed more sexual risk behaviors and more frequent use of both alcohol and snorted cocaine. discussion: cocaine injectors in the two regions studied displayed different levels of hiv risk behaviors, and these behaviors appear to be related to the type, method and frequency of drug use. these data were collected between 1994 and 1997 when the use of crack was less common in these cities, which may have changed the current level of risk behaviors for hiv among cocaine users.

Abstract: The extracellular matrix is a key element in the tracheal morphology and physiology, both in normal and pathological states, yet little is known regarding its composition and organization. Herein we carried out a detailed study of the morphological organization and volumetric density of elastic system fibers in the trachea of Wistar rats. Six Wistar rats at the age of 45 days were used. The trachea was excised following anesthesia with Thiopental and perfusion through the left ventricle with buffered saline followed by formalin solution. Samples were fixed in formaline, embedded in paraffin, and histologically processed. The elastic system fibers were evaluated at light microscopy by using Weigert's resorcin-fuchsin technique after oxidation with oxone. Morphometric studies were performed by the point-counting method. Quantities were expressed (%, mean) as volumetric densities and were determined on 25 random fields for each animal. Elastic system fibers were identified beneath the tracheal mucosa showing mainly a longitudinal profile. There were also some bundles of oblique fibers in this region, forming an irregular network of elastic tissue. Close to the inner surface of the cartilaginous ring, a well defined circular layer is present. The volumetric density of the elastic system fibers in the trachea of Wistar rats is 2.46 ± 0.99%. The data in the present study provides original information regarding the elastic system fibers of the rat trachea, which might be used as a model for studying human major airway morphology. The results reported herein provide the basis for continuous investigations on tracheal extracellular matrix by stereology.

Abstract: the inexistence of organic seeds in the market and the absence of information constitute a difficulty for the organic production. the green fertilizer efficiency (gf) was evaluated, of organic compound (oc), and biofertilizer (b) in carrot production and seeds quality, compared to conventional fertilizer (cf-control), through the treatments: 1) cf; 2, gf+b via soil; 3) gf+b via plant; 4) oc+b via soil; 5) oc+b via plant; 6) oc+gf+b via soil and 7) oc+gf+b via plant. higher morphological values (height, length and diameter), of germination and vigor were given by treatment 5, while production and total soluble solids reached higher gradients when growing plants with treatment 4, upper data of treatment 1. treatment 3 resulted in root production with lower number of branches nematode. carrots of preview treatments 2 and 6 were classified in a lower size. decomposition of gf, linked to b applied to the plant, may have given a higher carrot resistance to nematodes and better commercial classification. organic treatments resulted in better roots and seed quality and higher production.

Abstract: pseudotumor cerebri (pc) is a syndrome characterized by the presence of intracranial hypertension (ich) and no alteration in the ventricular system. renal transplanted patients seem more susceptible to develop it due to immunosuppressive therapy. cyclosporin (csa) is a rare cause of pc, scarcely reported in the literature, and should be considered in the differential diagnosis of ich and papilledema in those patients. we report the case of a 10-year-old boy, with a renal allograft for three years, on chronic use of mycophenolate mophetil (mmf), csa, and low doses of prednisone. the patient presented with headache, vomiting, diplopia, and photophobia. funduscopy showed bilateral papilledema. cerebrospinal fluid analysis and imaging tests were normal. after excluding secondary causes, pc was diagnosed based on the chronic use of csa, which was then replaced by sirolimus. after that, the patient progressively improved, and the papilledema resolved in three months
