Abstract: background: the preeclampsia syndrome is associated with endothelial dysfunction and the differential diagnosis between pure preeclampsia (pe) and superimposed preeclampsia (spe) can be only be attained 12 weeks after delivery. objective: to compare the assessment of endothelial function through flow-mediated dilatation in pregnant women with pure preeclampsia and superimposed preeclampsia. methods: the flow-mediated dilatation of the brachial artery was carried out according to the recommendations of the international brachial artery reactivity task force in pregnant women with preeclampsia syndrome. pe (n=14) and spe (n=13) were diagnosed in the postpartum period according to the definitions of the national high blood pressure education program working group on high blood pressure in pregnancy. results: the median of the flow-mediated dilatation (fmd) in spe (6.0%; 1.9-10.3) was decreased in comparison with the pe (13.6%;4.4-17.1), an apparently relevant difference , but not statistically significant (p = 0.08). the fmd < 10% was detected in 30.8% of the pe cases and in 69.2% of the spe cases (p = 0.057). significant differences could not be detected in the morphology of the uterine arteries between the pe and spe cases through the doppler spectrum. conclusion: the fmd of the brachial artery of patients with preeclampsia syndrome was not capable of differentiating between pe and spe. however, the data suggest that spe is associated with worse endothelial function i comparison to pe.

Abstract: guava (psidium guajava) is largely cultivated in northeastern brazil where it is a very important crop. however few researches have investigated the plant pollination requirements. this knowledge can help in managing orchards to improve crop productivity. therefore, the present study is aimed at investigating the pollination requirements of guava. the study was carried out with cultivar paluma and treatments of open pollination, restricted pollination, hand self-pollination and hand cross pollination among plants of the same and different cultivars were tested. guava set fruits when pollinated by wind or biotic agents, but flowers protected from flower visitors set only 15.09%. guava flowers set fruits when were hand self-pollinated, but cross pollinated flowers showed better results because raised fruit production up to 39.5%. the presence of biotic pollinators promoting cross pollination in guava orchards seems to be necessary to maximize crop productivity.
Controle ultra-sonográfico de gesta??es, de mortalidades embrionárias e fetais e do sexo de fetos bovinos zebuínos
BARROS, Breno José Pelozo de;VISINTIN, José Antonio;
Brazilian Journal of Veterinary Research and Animal Science , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-95962001000200006
Abstract: this study analysed the efficiency of early pregnancy diagnosis and embryo and fetal mortality and sexing evaluation by ultrasound in two groups of zebu cows submitted to artificial insemination (g1) or embryo transfer (g2 = g2a and g2b). the animals that not returned to estrus at 21th day after artificial insemination (g1) and 14th day after embryo transfer (g2b) were examinated at 25th day of gestation for early pregnancy diagnosis, at 45th day for embryo mortality between 25th and 45th and at 60th days for fetal mortality between 45th and 60th days and sexing evaluation. the animals from group g2a were examinated by retal palpation at 45th day for gestation diagnosis and at 60th day for fetal mortality between 45th and 60th days and sexing evaluation. the pregnancy rates were 94.6%, 88.1% and 83.4%, respectively, to 25, 45 and 60 days of pregnancy. the embryo and fetal mortality and abortion rates were, respectively, 4.6%, 4.7% and 1.2%. the accurate early pregnancy diagnosis and fetal sexing were, respectively, 88.5% and 90.7%. the ultrasound was efficient to evaluate early pregnancy (25th day), embryo mortality (25th to 45th days), fetal mortality (45th to 60th days) and sexing (60th day). the detection of early pregnancy can be applied to establish the stages of highest embryo and fetal mortality rates in zebu cattle. this study revealed that embryo and fetal mortality rates in bos indicus were not caused by ultrasound examination.

Barth, Breno;Alves, Mílton Ruiz;Kara-José, Newton;
Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27492008000100019
Abstract: purpose: to evaluate the visual performance by high contrast visual acuity, contrast sensitivity and wavefront in myopic patients with or without astigmatism corrected with spectacles and with three different soft contact lenses [acuvue? 2 (vistacon j&j vision care inc., usa), biomedics? 55 (ocular science, usa), and focus? 1-2 week (ciba vision corporation, usa)]. methods: an interventional prospective clinical trial studied a sample of 40 myopic patients (-1.00 to -4.50 sph, with or without astigmatism up to -0.75 cyl). each patient had one eye randomized to visual performance evaluation. results: the zywave aberrometer detected a over refraction and significant difference between acuvue? 2 and biomedics? 55 regarding spheric refractive components and spheric equivalent. both soft contact lenses showed hypercorrection as compared to focus? 1-2 week. visual performance was not significantly different with spectacles and the three soft contact lenses in visual acuity and contrast sensitivity measurements. the wavefront analysis detected a significant difference in a third order aberration with and without soft contact lenses, with better visual performance with acuvue? 2 and biomedics? 55. conclusion: in visual performance evaluation with spectacles and soft contact lenses the wavefront analysis was a more sensible measurement of visual function when compared to high contrast visual acuity and contrast sensitivity. the evaluation model of visual performance with wavefront analysis developed in this investigation may be useful for further similar studies.

Oliveira Filho, José Hugo de;Freitas, Breno Magalh?es;
Ciência Rural , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-84782003000400017
Abstract: carpenter bees (xylocopa spp.) are important pollinators, but rearing them for introduction in agricultural areas has been difficult because of their nesting behavior. models of rational nesting boxes, which allow observing their interior, manipulating the nests and transporting them to the orchards, have not been accepted by the bees. the present work tested colonization and reproductive biology of carpenter bees in a model of nesting box suggested by freitas & oliveira (2001). results showed 18.75 to 52.22% colonization by x. frontalis, with 3.0 to 4.7 nests founded per box. architecture of the nests built in the rational rearing boxes was similar to that observed in wild nests, and the cycle from egg to adult took an average of 45.58 days. the offspring ratio male/female was 0.60 : 1.00. it is concluded that the model of rational nesting box tested is well accepted by x. frontalis and does not affect negatively the reproductive biology of this bee species.

Abstract: brazil is the largest producer of passionfruit (passiflora edulis) in the world, but holds low fruit productivity due to the lack of natural pollinators such as carpenter bees (xylocopa spp.) in cultivated areas. the present work investigated the use in passionfruit plantations of a model of rational nesting box for carpenter bees suggested by freitas & oliveira filho (2001). results showed that the introduction of inhabited nesting boxes in the studied area raised in 505% the frequency of carpenter bees to passionfruit flowers and in 92.3% initial fruit setting. therefore, it is concluded that the use of this model of rational nesting boxes is efficient to increase carpenter bee population in an agricultural area and can contribute to increase levels of pollination and productivity in passionfruit plantations.

Abstract: introduction: the last decade saw the creation and implementation of the brazilian national health system (nhs) - public, universal and equalitarian - with the objective of offering wide coverage to meet the population's health needs. the objective of the study was the assessment of the evolution of public and private hospital care on a populational basis during the period of the implementation of the nhs. methods: the 984,142 inpatients of the general hospitals of ribeir?o preto, brazil, during the period 1986 to 1996 were studied and those of them living in their own municipal district were selected. the inpatients are classified according to the financing system as private, pre-payment and nhs; the social situation of the patients and the profile of hospital morbidity are analysed. results: in the period studied a continuous growth in the number of hospitalizations is observed, both in absolute numbers and in coefficient per thousand inhabitants, increasing from 43,773 to 55,844 inpatients per year. though when the categories of the hospitalizations are studied, it is seen that private inpatients present a reduction both in absolute numbers and as a coefficient from 3,181 (7.3%) to 2,215 (3.9%); the nhs inpatients decrease in absolute numbers and in a percentage by a third at the end of the period - falling from 33,254 (76.0%) to 29,373 (51.7%). on the other hand the pre-payment inpatient system triplicates in absolute numbers and duplicates by rate for inhabitant - from 7,338 (16.8%) to 25,256 (44.4%). the nhs hospital care attends mainly unskilled and semi-skilled manual workers; the professionals, technicians, non manual and skilled manual workers being assisted by the private services. the hospital morbidity of nhs inpatients is different from that of the private inpatient systems. the health policy in that period, limiting nhs financing, repressing demand and discouraging the private providers to work with nhs inpatients led to negative selectivity. the resu
