Mathematical Problems in Engineering , 2006, DOI: 10.1155/mpe/2006/46815
Abstract: The goal of this paper is to propose a nonlinear dynamic model based on experimental data and NBR-6123-87 to accomplish a nonlinear dynamic analysis of slender structures subjected to wind loading. At first we compute the static answer given by the mean wind speed. In this part of the problem we consider the concept of effective stiffness to represent the physical nonlinearity of material and a P-Delta method to represent the geometrical nonlinearity. Considering the final stiffness obtained in that P-Delta method, we compute the dynamic answer given by the floating wind speed, according to the discrete dynamic model given by NBR-6123-87. A 40 m RC telecommunication tower was analyzed, and the results obtained were compared with those given by linear static and dynamic models.

Biolchi, Vanderlei;Silva Neto, Brasil;Koff, Walter;Brum, Ilma Simoni;
International braz j urol , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1677-55382012000300010
Abstract: benign prostatic hyperplasia (bph) is a very frequent age-related proliferative abnormality in men. polymorphic cag repeat in the androgen receptor (ar) can alter transactivation of androgen-responsive genes and potentially influence bph risk. we investigated the association between cag repeat length and risk of bph in a case-control study of a brazilian population. we evaluated 214 patients; 126 with bph and 88 healthy controls. dna was extracted from peripheral leucocytes and the ar gene was analyzed using fragment analysis. hazard ratio (hr) and 95% confidence interval were estimated using logistic regression models. mean cag length was not different between patients with bph and controls. the cag repeat length was examined as a categorical variable (cag < 21 vs. cag > 21 and cag < 22 vs. cag > 22) and did not differ between the control vs. the bph group. we found no evidence for an association between ar cag repeat length in bph risk in a population-based sample of brazilians.

Engenharia Sanitaria e Ambiental , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-41522008000300012
Abstract: this work was conducted to evaluate both hydrological and hydraulic aspects in four constructed wetland systems (sacs), that were cropped with typha sp. and used in the treatment of the domestic wastewater presettled in septic tank. the system was fed a constant water application ratio (q) of 60, 47, 23 and 35 liter m-2 d-1 in sacs 1, 2, 3 and 4, respectively, besides being monitored. the hydraulic conductivity and evapotranspiration were also measured. water balances were monthly accomplished during six-months period. the results evidenced the hydraulic conductivity in the supportive medium to be reduced during the operating time of the system, as well as the treatment system showed an average evapotranspiration of 9.3mm d-1, as resulting into a cropping coefficient (kc) of the typha sp. ranging from 2.22 to 4.58.
Aexia sem agrafia: estudo clínico-tomográfico
Silva, Amauri Batista da;Pratesi, Riccardo;Brasil Netto, Joaquim Pereira;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 1986, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X1986000300007
Abstract: the authors report the clinical findings and ct-scanning results in two cases of alexia without agraphia and review the literature on this subject. both patients had extensive infarction in the territory supplied by the left posterior cerebral artery and developed severe alexia without agraphia, right hemianopia without color-anomia and one of them presented with transient verbal memory difficulties. in both cases the evolution was very good, with total regression of the alexia after 17 months in the first patient and almost complete recovery after there months in the second one. the authors comment on the causes and possible mechanisms of the alexias, especially of the alexia without agraphia, and suggest that every patient with right hemianopic disturbances due to occlusion of the left posterior cerebral artery be thouroughly studied from a neurological point of view, so that this syndrome can be detected since, notwithstanding its recognized rarity, it seems highly probable that many cases have been overlooked as a result of incomplete examination of the patients.
A valida??o brasileira do Questionnaire of Smoking Urges
Araujo, Renata Brasil;Oliveira, Margareth da Silva;Mansur, Maria Augusta;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2006001000022
Abstract: this study was designed to validate the brazilian version of the questionnaire of smoking urges(qsu). the design was experimental, and participants were randomly distributed in groups of zero, 30, and 60 minutes of tobacco abstinence. the total sample was 201, with 67 males and 134 females, age ranging from 18 to 65 (m = 38.15). the instruments applied, besides qsu, were the social and demographic data form, visual analogue scale to evaluate craving, fagerstr?m test for nicotine dependence, and beck anxiety and depression inventories. total variation in the two-factor factorial analysis was 57.76%, with a high inter-correlation (r = 0.726; p = 0.000). factor 1 represented the anticipated relief of negative affect, nicotine abstinence symptoms, and urgent and overwhelming desire to smoke. factor 2 represented the desire to smoke and the anticipation of smoking pleasure. such results are contrary to those found in the original qsu. the brazilian version proved to be an adequate and reliable instrument that can be used in both research and patient treatment.

Critério de Avalia??o da Corrosividade de Solos Baseado na Sobreten??o de Hidrogênio
Silva,José Maurílio da; Brasil,Simone L.;
Corros?o e Protec??o de Materiais , 2010,
Abstract: the corrosion of buried metallic structures demands significant costs from many industrial sectors. the necessity of proper evaluation of the soil aggressiveness, for instance, requires indirect measurements that correlate the soil properties with its absolute corrosivity. in this work, physical-chemical and electrochemical parameters have been obtained for several soil samples, such as resistivity, ph, corrosion potential and hydrogen overpotential. such measurements, including weight loss results, define an original criterion to characterize the soil corrosivity. this criterion is based on the hydrogen reduction cathodic reaction. in soils with low resistivity values, oxygen reduction can be present and, in this case, the study should be carefully analyzed.
