Optimal Policy and Simple Algorithm for a Deteriorated Multi-Item EOQ Problem  [PDF]

Abstract: This paper considers a deteriorated multi-item economic order quantity (EOQ) problem, which has been studied in literature, but the algorithms used in the literature are limited. In this paper, we explore the optimal policy of this inventory problem by analyzing the structural properties of the model, and introduce a simple algorithm for generating the optimal solution to this problem. Numerical results are reported to show effi-cacy of the proposed method.
Using Chou’s Pseudo Amino Acid Composition for Protein Remote Homology Detection  [PDF]

Abstract:

Protein remote homology detection is a key problem in bioinformatics. Currently, the discriminative methods, such as Support Vector Machine (SVM), can achieve the best performance. The most efficient approach to improve the performance of the SVM-based methods is to find a general protein representation method that is able to convert proteins with different lengths into fixed length vectors and captures the different properties of the proteins for the discrimination. The bottleneck of designing the protein representation method is that native proteins have different lengths. Motivated by the success of the pseudo amino acid composition (PseAAC) proposed by Chou, we applied this approach for protein remote homology detection. Some new indices derived from the amino acid index (AAIndex) database are incorporated into the PseAAC to improve the generalization ability of this method. Our experiments on a well-known benchmark show this method achieves superior or comparable performance with current state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract:

The so-called “megasporophylls” of Ginkgoales, Coniferales, and Gnetales have been proven metamorphosed shoots, making “megasporophyll” of Cycas the last one resembling a leaf. Why and how it is so in Cycas (the most ancient seed plant dated back to the Palaeozoic) become key questions because their answers are hinged with the fates of several hypotheses in botany. Here, we performed a controlled developmental experiment on the ovulate parts (megasporophylls) in a single strobilus of Cycas sexseminifera. By removing the neighboring ones, two of the ovulate parts were left isolated spatially from others, in contrast to others left intact. A half-year-long continuous observation indicates that the isolated ovulate parts change their ovule arrangement from initial pinnate into helical pattern, while the intact ones in the same strobilus remain pinnate as usual. Since all ovulate parts are in the same strobilus and controlled by the same genome in this case and the only difference is lack of pressure from neighbors for the isolated ones, the changes in ovule orientation and ovulate part morphology can only be attributed to the lack of mechanical pressure among the ovulate parts. Perineal Electric Burn Reconstruction Using Modified Thoraco-Umbilical Flap  [PDF]

Abstract: Perineal reconstruction is an essential component of the overall treatment plan of perineal electric burn, but it is a very difficult and complex job. The modified thoraco-umbilical flap may be a perfect way of repairing perineal area. It is based on the deep inferior epigastric artery and vein and the superior epigastric artery and vein, which look like the “reverse TRAM flap”. The large flap could be fashioned into a perfect perineal area without the need for free flap. It left a satisfactory donor scar, and it avoided the need to change the patient’s position during the operation. Four cases were reconstructed by modified thoraco-umbilical flap after perineal electric burn, and all of them were satisfied with the results. The modified thoraco-umbilical flap has been emerged as a very useful reconstructive tool and is particularly valuable in reconstruction of the perineal electric burn.

Abstract:

Organizational diagnosis is the process of diagnosing an organizational health, finding pathogens if any and finally removing those pathogens through some corrective actions. In order to perform an effective diagnosis, the first step is to identify the organization’s health types. In this paper we propose three basic states of an organization with respect to the health of the organization. These three states in which an organization can be at any point of time are performing, stable and disarranged. Every state has its own characteristics, which can be measured through the extended diagnostic model. Based on those measurements diagnostician can classify an organization to be in one of the states. Finally the diagnostician suggests corrective actions for the stable or disarranged states to move the organization to the performing state.

Abstract:

Organizational diagnosis is an exercise done to check an organization’s current health. A complete diagnosis not only checks the current health, but also suggests corrective measures. Diagnostic models suggested by others were evaluated in this paper including some of the authors’ previous work and shortcoming i.e. lacking the sustainable development focus in these models of organizational health diagnosis was identified. The main focus of this paper is to incorporate sustainability dimension in the organizational diagnostic model. We therefore propose in this paper an alternative, sustainability embedded model for organizational diagnosis. This model can be used by the organizational diagnosticians to perform a comprehensive organizational diagnosis.
