Coil Formation in Multishell Carbon Nanotubes: Competition between Curvature Elasticity and Interlayer Adhesion

Abstract: To study the shape formation process of carbon nanotubes, a string equation describing the possible existing shapes of the axis-curve of multishell carbon tubes (MCTs) is obtained in the continuum limit by minimizing the shape energy, that is the difference between the MCT energy and the energy of the carbonaceous mesophase (CM). It is shown that there exists a threshold relation of the outmost and inmost radii, that gives a parameter regime in which a straight MCT will be bent or twisted. Among the deformed shapes, the regular coiled MCTs are shown being one of the solutions of the string equation. In particular,the optimal ratio of pitch $p$ and radius $r_0$ for such a coil is found to be equal to $2\pi $, which is in good agreement with recent observation of coil formation in MCTs by Zhang et al.

Electronic Conduction in Short DNA Wires

Abstract: A strict method is used to calculate the current-voltage characteristics of a double-stranded DNA. A more reliable model considering the electrostatic potential drop along an individual DNA molecular wire between the contacts is considered and the corresponding Green's Function is obtained analytically using Generating Function method, which avoids difficult numerical evaluations. The obtained results indicate that the electrostatic drop along the wire always increases the conductor beyond the threshold than without considering it, which is in agreement with recent experiments. The present method can also be used to calculate the current-voltage characteristics for other molecular wires of arbitrary length.
Spontaneous polygonization of multi-walled carbon nanotubes: perturbation analysis

Abstract: Spontaneous polygonization for a multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have been observed for about two decades. In present manuscript, this phenomenon is understood by the competition between cohesion energy (with lattice mismatching effect) and curvature elastic energy of tubes inside the MWCNTs. Based on a continuum elastic model and perturbation analysis, the crucial conditions for spontaneous polygonization of MWCNT is expressed by fundamental parameters of MWCNTs, which are in reasonable agreement with all relevant experiments and computer simulations reported in literatures. Present approach can be used in further studies of crossectional geometry-dependent properties of MWCNTs.
Return Predictability and Strategic Trading under Symmetric Information  [PDF]

Abstract: This paper develops a rational equilibrium model of strategic trading under symmetric information in which there is a liquidity provider and a strategic trader. The strategic trader considers the impact of his trades, the liquidity provider sets the stock price competitively, and there is a possibility that the value of the stock payoff will be revealed perfectly before the terminal date. Under certain conditions, we find that a buy (sale)-order by the strategic trader leads to positive (negative) stock returns in the future and that there exists a positive contemporaneous relationship between the stock return and the trades of the strategic trader. Under other conditions, we demonstrate that the stock exhibits positive (negative) returns following buying (selling) by the liquidity provider. We then introduce a trend chaser into the rational model. If trend chasing is weak, we show that the mechanical trend chaser can actually make a profit. If trend chasing is strong, the strategic trader is able to raise the stock prices by buying initially to attract the trend chaser and sells to the trend chaser later for profits.
The efficacy of thymosin alpha 1 for severe sepsis (ETASS): a multicenter, single-blind, randomized and controlled trial

Abstract: We performed a multicenter randomized controlled trial in six tertiary, teaching hospitals in China between May 12, 2008 and Dec 22, 2010. Eligible patients admitted in ICU with severe sepsis were randomly allocated by a central randomization center to the control group or Tα1 group (1:1 ratio). The primary outcome was death from any cause and was assessed 28 days after enrollment. Secondary outcomes included dynamic changes of Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) and monocyte human leukocyte antigen-DR (mHLA-DR) on day 0, 3, 7 in both groups. All analyses were done on an intention-to-treat basis.A total of 361 patients were allocated to either the control group (n = 180) or Tα1 (n = 181) group. The mortalities from any cause within 28 days in the Tα1 group and control group were 26.0% and 35.0% respectively with a marginal P value (nonstratified analysis, P = 0.062; log rank, P = 0.049); the relative risk of death in the Tα1 group as compared to the control group was 0.74 (95% CI 0.54 to 1.02). Greater improvement of mHLA-DR was observed in the Tα1 group on day 3 (mean difference in mHLA-DR changes between the two groups was 3.9%, 95% CI 0.2 to 7.6%, P = 0.037) and day 7 (mean difference in mHLA-DR changes between the two groups was 5.8%, 95% CI 1.0 to 10.5%, P = 0.017) than in the control group. Changes of monocyte human leukocyte antigen-DR expression as a reliable predictor of mortality in severe sepsis

Abstract: In this prospective observational study, mHLA-DR was measured by flow cytometry in peripheral blood from 79 adult patients with severe sepsis. mHLA-DR levels were determined on day 0, 3, 7 after admission to the surgical intensive care unit (SICU) with a diagnosis of severe sepsis. ΔmHLA-DR3 and ΔmHLA-DR7 were defined as the changes in mHLA-DR value on day 3 and day 7 compared to that on day 0. Data were compared between 28-day survivors and non-survivors. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were plotted to measure the performance and discriminating threshold of ΔmHLA-DR3, ΔmHLA-DR7, ΔmHLA-DR7-3, mHLA-DR0, mHLA-DR3 and mHLA-DR7 in predicting mortality of severe sepsis.ROC curve analysis showed that ΔmHLA-DR3 and ΔmHLA-DR7 were reliable indicators of mortality in severe sepsis. A ΔmHLA-DR3 value of 4.8% allowed discrimination between survivors and non-survivors with a sensitivity of 89.0% and a specificity of 93.7%; similarly, ΔmHLA-DR7 value of 9% allowed discrimination between survivors and non-survivors with a sensitivity of 85.7% and a specificity of 90.0%. Patients with ΔmHLA-DR3 ≤4.8% had higher mortality than those with ΔmHLA-DR3 > 4.8% (71.4% vs. 2.0%, OR 125.00, 95% CI 13.93 to 1121.67); patients with ΔmHLA-DR7 ≤9% had higher mortality than those with ΔmHLA-DR7 > 9% (52.9% vs. 2.0%, OR 54.00, 95% CI 5.99 to 486.08). The mean change of mHLA-DR significantly increased in the survivor group with the passage of time; from day 0 to day 3 and day 7, changes were 6.45 and 16.90 (P < 0.05), respectively.The change of mHLA-DR over time may be a reliable predictor for mortality in patients with severe sepsis.Severe sepsis is an important cause of admission to intensive care units (ICUs) throughout the world and is characterized by high mortality in adults [1-4]. Abstract: A unified model is constructed to study the recently observed DNA entropic elasticity, cooperative extensibility, and supercoiling property. With the introduction of a new structural parameter (the folding angle $\phi$), bending deformations of sugar-phosphate backbones, steric effects of nucleotide basepairs, and short-range basestacking interactions are considered. The comprehensive agreement of theoretical results with experimental observations on both torsionally relaxed and negatively supercoiled DNAs strongly indicates that, basestacking interactions, although short-ranged in nature, dominate the elasticity of DNA and hence are of vital biological significance.
Elastic property of single double-stranded DNA molecules: Theoretical study and comparison with experiments

Abstract: This paper aims at a comprehensive understanding on the novel elastic property of double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) discovered very recently through single-molecule manipulation techniques. A general elastic model for double-stranded biopolymers is proposed and a new structural parameter called the folding angle $\phi$ is introduced to characterize their deformations. The mechanical property of long dsDNA molecules is then studied based on this model, where the base-stacking interactions between DNA adjacent nucleotide basepairs, the steric effects of basepairs, and the electrostatic interactions along DNA backbones are taken into account. Quantitative results are obtained by using path integral method, and excellent agreement between theory and the observations reported by five major experimental groups are attained. The strong intensity of the base-stacking interactions ensures the structural stability of DNA, while the short-ranged nature of such interactions makes externally-stimulated large structural fluctuations possible. The entropic elasticity, highly extensibility, and supercoiling property of DNA are all closely related to this account. The present work also suggests the possibility that negative torque can induce structural transitions in highly extended DNA from right-handed B-form to left-handed configurations similar with Z-form configuration. Some formulae concerned with the application of path integral method to polymeric systems are listed in the Appendix.
