Abstract: A measure for the efficiency of a thermoelectric material is the figure of merit defined by ZT = S2T/ρκ, where S, ρ and κ are the electronic transport coefficients, Seebeck coefficient, electrical resistivity and thermal conductiviy, respectively. T is the absolute temperature. Large values for ZT have been realized in nanostructured materials such as superlattices, quantum dots, nanocomposites, and nanowires. In order to achieve further progress, (1) a fundamental understanding of the carrier transport in nanocomposites is necessary, and (2) effective experimental methods for designing, producing and measuring new material compositions with nanocomposite-structures are to be applied. During the last decades, a series of formulas has been derived for calculation of the electronic transport coefficients in composites and disordered alloys. Along the way, some puzzling phenomenons have been solved as why there are simple metals with positive thermopower? and what is the reason for the phenomenon of the Giant Hall effect”? and what is the reason for the fact that amorphous composites can exist at all? Origin of the large anisotropic g-factor of holes in bismuth

Abstract: The ratio of the Zeeman splitting to the cyclotron energy ($M=\Delta E_{\rm Z}/\hbar \omega_{\rm c}$) for hole-like carriers in bismuth has been quantified with a great precision by many experiments performed during the past five decades. It exceeds 2 when the magnetic field is along the trigonal axis and vanishes in the perpendicular configuration. Theoretically, however, $M$ is expected to be isotropic and equal to unity in a two-band Dirac model. We argue that a solution to this half-a-century-old puzzle can be found by extending the $k\cdot p$ theory to multiple bands. Our model not only gives a quantitative account of magnitude and anisotropy of $M$ for hole-like carriers in bismuth, but also explains its contrasting evolution with antimony doping pressure, both probed by new experiments reported here. The present results have important implications for the magnitude and anisotropy of $M$ in other systems with strong spin-orbit coupling.

Abstract: the present paper deals with the links between research, education and practice. after having reminded the criticism to which research in education has been subjected, it points out the specificity of scientific research, its characteristics, its structural components and its functions as a cognitive objectivation process. the issue of distinguishing between methods and methodology is then examined, so as to enhance the need to resort to combined methods to analyse the teaching practices, and to stress the necessity of considering the scientific approach from a four-pole-structure. finally, the relationships between research and practices are explored in regard to teacher education.

Abstract: Using critical theory, this paper first confronts critically the relationship between education and performance in light of globalisation and its underlying neo liberal ideology. This comparison reveals that there is a definite compatibility between them, but it is fully slanted towards efficiency logic and human capital production. Then, adopting a critical attitude, the paper questions this direction, in the name of the emancipation and citizenship prospects, which brought the school system reorganisation by democratic nation states. The current choices have distorted these objectives and have redirected them towards utilitarian learnings and an increasingly therapeutic socialisation. Finally, the paper stresses the inseparability between the performance issue, the social equity issue and the education/teaching effectiveness issue in order to highlight the need for taking into account qualitative dimensions, which stem from the background and the pupils, so as to focus much more on learning processes, rather than on learning outcomes themselves.

Abstract: The family continues imposing itself and generating patterns which structure our vision of the social world, and this is not the effect of anthropological necessity. On the contrary, thanks to the socially predetermined equation between the political and familial categories of perception of the social world and equation which is at the root of this vision—, family structures are recognized to be the natural foundation of all things, perticularly the public thing —[the respublica]: the family appears all the more as the natural foundation of the political order as it is itself perceived according to the categories on the basis of which the political order is built. This circular equation is the result of the ruling classes’ symbolic investment strategy: the impose judgment categories which are advantageous to them, and favor practices susceptible of being assessed in their favor, so that the economic, cultural and political foundations of their domination seem natural. Representations of the family also very directly partake of the strategies which contribute to the reproduction of social structures. La familia continúa imponiendo y generando pautas que estructuran nuestra visión del mundo social, y esto no es el efecto de una necesidad antropológica. Por el contrario, gracias a una ecuación socialmente predeterminada entre las categorías políticas y familiares de percepción del mundo social —una ecuación que está en la raíz de esta visión—, las estructuras familiares están reconocidas como los cimientos naturales de todas las cosas, particularmente de la cosa pública —[la respública]: la familia aparece más aún como el cimiento natural del orden político tal como él mismo es percibido de acuerdo a las categorías sobre las cuales se construye el orden político. Esta ecuación circular es el resultado de la estrategia de inversión simbólica de la clase dirigente: imponen categorías de juicio que les sean ventajosas, y prácticas susceptibles de ser evaluadas en su favor, de manera que las instituciones económicas, culturales y políticas de su dominio parezcan naturales. Representaciones de la familia también toman parte muy directamente en las estrategias que contribuyen a la reproducción de las estructuras sociales.
The Societas Europaea (SE) in Europe A promising start and an option with good prospects

Abstract: Since the coming into force of the respective legislation for the Societas Europaea (the European Company, or SE) in 2004, almost 100 SEs have been formed or are in the process of being formed. But who has formed an SE, how and why? This paper is a shortened form of a rather extensive report submitted by the author to the French Ministry of Justice in 2007, outlining the use of SE in Europe until 2007. The various motives and advantages behind setting up real SEs in practice are discussed. Likewise, the author exposes some of the problems arising from the establishment of this supranational corporate form. In view of the approaching due date for review of the SE Regulation, the paper concludes with various suggestions for improvement.
Practices of Disciplinarity and Interdisciplinarity in Quebec Elementary Schools: Results of Twenty Years of Research

Abstract: This article presents a synthesis of different research projects that have been carried out inthe province of Quebec, Canada over the past 20 years concerning the representations and practices ofelementary teachers regarding the relative importance given to subject matter and the use ofinterdisciplinarity in their teaching practice. The first section will explain the context of the Quebecschool system on a socio-historical and political level and review the emergence of the concept ofinterdisciplinarity in Quebec. The second section will present succinctly the different research projectsthat have been conducted since 1980 and the conceptual framework they were based on. The thirdsection will consider the main results of the various research projects from two angles: first, therepresentations and practices of the teachers regarding interdisciplinarity; secondly, the relativeimportance and role that the teachers give to interdisciplinarity. In the conclusion, we will highlightamong other things the central position teachers give to the role of socialization and their minimalconsideration for the teaching of disciplinary knowledge.
Predicting the variance of a measurement with 1/f noise

Abstract: Measurement devices always add noise to the signal of interest and it is necessary to evaluate the variance of the results. This article focuses on stationary random processes whose Power Spectrum Density is a power law of frequency. For flicker noise, behaving as $1/f$ and which is present in many different phenomena, the usual way to compute the variance leads to infinite values. This article proposes an alternative definition of the variance which takes into account the fact that measurement devises need to be calibrated. This new variance, which depends on the calibration duration, the measurement duration and the duration between the calibration and the measurement, allows avoiding infinite values when computing the variance of a measurement.
A general approach of least squares estimation and optimal filtering

Abstract: The least squares method allows fitting parameters of a mathematical model from experimental data. This article proposes a general approach of this method. After introducing the method and giving a formal definition, the transitivity of the method as well as numerical considerations are discussed. Then two particular cases are considered: the usual least squares method and the Generalized Least Squares method. In both cases, the estimator and its variance are characterized in the time domain and in the Fourier domain. Finally, the equivalence of the Generalized Least Squares method and the optimal filtering technique using a matched filter is established.
