A simple agent-based spatial model of the economy: tools for policy
Bernardo Alves Furtado,Isaque Daniel Rocha Eberhardt
Computer Science , 2015,
Abstract: This study simulates the evolution of artificial economies in order to understand the tax relevance of administrative boundaries in the quality of life of its citizens. The modeling involves the construction of a computational algorithm, which includes citizens, bounded into families; firms and governments; all of them interacting in markets for goods, labor and real estate. The real estate market allows families to move to dwellings with higher quality or lower price when the families capitalize property values. The goods market allows consumers to search on a flexible number of firms choosing by price and proximity. The labor market entails a matching process between firms (location and offered wage) and candidates (qualification). The government may be configured into one, four or seven distinct sub-national governments. The role of government is to collect taxes on the value added of firms in its territory and invest the taxes into higher levels of quality of life for residents. The model does not have a credit market. The results suggest that the configuration of administrative boundaries is relevant to the levels of quality of life arising from the reversal of taxes. The model with seven regions is more dynamic, with higher GDP values, but more unequal and heterogeneous across regions. The simulation with only one region is more homogeneously poor. The study seeks to contribute to a theoretical and methodological framework as well as to describe, operationalize and test computer models of public finance analysis, with explicitly spatial and dynamic emphasis. Several alternatives of expansion of the model for future research are described. Moreover, this study adds to the existing literature in the realm of simple microeconomic computational models, specifying structural relationships between local governments and firms, consumers and dwellings mediated by distance.

Abstract: this paper presents new econometric specifications for the brazilian exports in the period 1995-2009 using data from the quarterly accounts and allowing for nonlinearities. in the cointegrating vector, there is evidence of a level shift, but the elasticities have not changed significantly. the income-elasticity remained close to the unity, and the real exchange rate multiplier was small. in the short-run dynamics, the world income exerts a nonnegligible influence, and the exchange rate is not significant. we estimate the correction of disequilibria occurs within three quarters. in addition, we underscore selected models exhibited a good performance in the out-of-sample one-step-ahead forecast.

Abstract: case reports are an old tradition in medical literature and, until the advent of more sophisticated study designs, they reigned as the one and only type of publication. in spite of their unquestionable qualities, case reports have lost part of their importance and prestige. some outstanding medical journals accept case reports only as letters to the editors or in the electronic version while others simply do not accept them at all. this article critically reviews the pros and cons of case reports and their importance in medical education. even in a medical world where evidence is a must, case reports can still play an important role.

PLOS ONE , 2013, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0082369
Abstract: Habitat loss is the main driver of the current biodiversity crisis, a landscape-scale process that affects the survival of spatially-structured populations. Although it is well-established that species responses to habitat loss can be abrupt, the existence of a biodiversity threshold is still the cause of much controversy in the literature and would require that most species respond similarly to the loss of native vegetation. Here we test the existence of a biodiversity threshold, i.e. an abrupt decline in species richness, with habitat loss. We draw on a spatially-replicated dataset on Atlantic forest small mammals, consisting of 16 sampling sites divided between forests and matrix habitats in each of five 3600-ha landscapes (varying from 5% to 45% forest cover), and on an a priori classification of species into habitat requirement categories (forest specialists, habitat generalists and open-area specialists). Forest specialists declined abruptly below 30% of forest cover, and spillover to the matrix occurred only in more forested landscapes. Generalists responded positively to landscape heterogeneity, peaking at intermediary levels of forest cover. Open area specialists dominated the matrix and did not spillover to forests. As a result of these distinct responses, we observed a biodiversity threshold for the small mammal community below 30% forest cover, and a peak in species richness just above this threshold. Our results highlight that cross habitat spillover may be asymmetrical and contingent on landscape context, occurring mainly from forests to the matrix and only in more forested landscapes. Moreover, they indicate the potential for biodiversity thresholds in human-modified landscapes, and the importance of landscape heterogeneity to biodiversity. Since forest loss affected not only the conservation value of forest patches, but also the potential for biodiversity-mediated services in anthropogenic habitats, our work indicates the importance of proactive measures to avoid human-modified landscapes to cross this threshold.
Indexicals in Virtual Environments  [PDF]
Bernardo Alonso
Open Journal of Philosophy (OJPP) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ojpp.2014.42018

In this paper I explored three well-known cases that seem to cast doubt on the notion that a speaker is always at the place of the utterance when the utterance occurs. I gave a few examples produced in Second Life environment, which cannot be handled correctly by evaluating the expression at issue with respect to the traditional view, i.e., the kaplanian framework—where the agent and the utterer will always be identical, and the referent of “I” will always be the utterer. The same happens to “here” and “now”; in each case the character of the indexical is a function from a contextual parameter to the referent of the expression. An example of logical truth peculiar to indexicals is the sentence “I am here now”, since, according to that view, no utterance can take place in a context whose agent is not in its location in its time. Finally I concluded by claiming that particular kinds of utterances produced in virtual environments (VE) break with the logical truth status of “I am here now”.

Long-term prognostic value of C-reactive protein in unstable angina

Critical Care , 2001, DOI: 10.1186/cc1342
Abstract: To analyze the relationship between CRP levels in patients hospitalized due to unstable angina and major adverse cardiac events during a 2-year follow up.We prospectively studied 22 consecutive patients admitted to our Coronary Care Unit between October 1997 and December 1997, and who had at least two CRP measurements. Admission and highest values were selected for statistical analyses. Follow up was made through phone calls to patients, relatives or assistant physicians, and end-points were death or readmission due to cardiovascular events. Patients were divided in two subgroups according to a CRP level cutoff ≤ 1 mg%. Survival free of events was analyzed by Kaplan-Meyer method, and log-rank test was applied for comparison between curves.See Table.Elevated CRP levels in patients admitted due to unstable angina can predict cardiovascular prognosis during a 2-year follow up. As only highest values correlated with worst outcomes, it seems reasonable that two or more measurements should be done during hospitalization.

Abstract: in 2005, brazilian biology high school textbooks were evaluated as part of the national program for the high school textbook (pnlem). in this paper, we report results of this evaluation. the evaluation criteria and processes are presented in a detailed manner, as well as the main flaws found in the textbooks not recommended to be bought by the ministry of education and the main positive aspects of the approved materials. nine out of 18 textbooks satisfied the minimum quality criteria for approval. seven excluded textbooks showed problems in all classes of evaluation criteria. all nine excluded textbooks exhibited problems related to conceptual correctness and adequacy, and accuracy of basic information. the most frequent qualities of approved textbooks concerned aspects of methodological adequacy and knowledge construction. we found no clear evidence that the frequency of choice of the approved textbooks by the high school teachers reflected the quality of the evaluated items, as established by the team which evaluated the textbooks.
