Pinheiro-Machado, Rosana;
Horizontes Antropológicos , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-71832007000200007
Abstract: in this article, starting with a reflection on change of contemporary china concerning its market and consumption, i discuss the diaspora role in the rediscovering of "traditional" values, especially related to harmony, hard work and saving notions which are based on religious and philosophic confucian heritage. if, on one hand, today we can observe a deep consumerism among the young generations who live in china, on the other hand, the denying of conspicuous consumption appears as a distinctive feature among chinese immigrants who live in ciudad del este (paraguay) and work as importers and distributors of made in china goods. due to these characteristics, i outline a comparison with the calvinist ethic, analyzed by max weber, drawing approaches and differences between protestantism and confucianism regarding conspicuous spending, work ethic and wealth accumulation.

Abstract: the open access movement acceptance by the scientific community has met many barriers. it is argued that understanding the processes of legitimation and legitimacy is essential to the issue. bringing forward some definition by scholars on the subject of legitimation and legitimacy, the article tries to show how the periodical crisis of the 80's triggered the processes of acceptance of the electronic periodical. the open access movement followed, and today it is currently trying to overcome barriers of prejudice and vested interests. it concludes by noting the strengthening of the concept of the necessity of peer review, but also the maturing of the movement, today less utopian and more realistic. it recognizes the role of the publishers and of segments of the scientific communities as the main forces in shaping scientific communication system and allowing advances of the open access channels towards legitimacy.

Pinheiro-Machado, Rosana;
Revista Brasileira de Ciências Sociais , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-69092008000200009
Abstract: in this article, i discuss the notions of informality and illicitness based on an ethnographic study about commercialization of goods made in china, i.e. gadgets and fake goods. i have followed the whole commodity chain: factories in china, importation in paraguay, and brazilian street markets. thus, i seek to show how the commodity statute and the work relations of this system metamorphose themselves between the formal and informal, licit and illicit. i also discuss other questions, such as entrepreneur ethos, outsourcing, relation between the informal sector and state, etc. i outline a comparative approach among the different countries studied: china, paraguay, and brazil.
Copied goods and the informal economy in Brazil and China: outlining a comparison of development models
Pinheiro-Machado, Rosana;
Vibrant: Virtual Brazilian Anthropology , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1809-43412012000100012
Abstract: since the 1980s, china and brazil became increasingly interconnected, based largely on the production, distribution and consumption of cheap chinese products. these countries have different cultural and historical attitudes to copied goods and non-regulated economic activities. however, over the last decade the dominant nations of the world system have been strengthening enforcement against piracy. this means that china and brazil are now supposed to deal with the so-called piracy and their marketplaces. based on ethnographical research of the commodity chain from china to brazil from 1999 to 2009, this paper argues that brazil and china react in different ways to the repression of piracy imposed by major international actors. despite the fact that the informal economy and the market for copies play an important role in both countries, the chinese state views such activities as drivers of its development, while the brazilian state interprets them as obstacles.
