Brazilian Dental Journal , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-64402007000300016
Abstract: the treatment of skeletal disharmonies presents better results when performed during the growth period. the physical changes that occur in every individual express growth, which is ruled by genetic, general and environmental factors. in order to identify such disharmonies and hence concentrate the clinical actions during treatment and influence facial growth, cephalometrics appears as a useful a diagnostic tool for identifying facial growth patterns or growth direction. jarabak's cephalometric analysis is used to assess facial growth pattern of subjects with normal occlusion or malocclusions. the purpose of this study was to obtain mean values for cephalometric measurements from jarabak's cephalometric analyses of black brazilian subjects resident in the city of piracicaba, s?o paulo state, brazil and vicinities, who presented class i molar relationship with normal overjet and overbite, mild or no tooth crowding or spacing, and no history of orthodontic treatment. a sample of 37 stone plaster casts and 37 lateral teleradiographs from both male and female individuals aged 10 to 14 years was evaluated. data were analyzed statistically by student's t-test at 5% significance level. there was no significant differences between genders. the cephalometric measurements obtained in this study were similar to the jarabak's standards, except for s-n mean value in females (66.50 mm ± 3.16), which was significantly lower than the standard.

Química Nova , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-40422011000200025
Abstract: presently glycerol is considered a co-product of biodiesel industry. as the biodiesel production is exponentially increasing, glycerol generated from the transesterification of vegetable oils and fats is also being produced on a large scale, and turned out to be essential seeking for novel alternatives to the consumption of the extra volume, in crude and/or as derivatives high added value. this review mainly deals with chemical and enzymatic transformations of glycerol to obtain chiral building blocks for synthesis of pharmaceuticals and natural products.
Bloqueio do nervo isquiático por abordagem posterior simplificada no ponto médio do sulco glúteo-femoral: estudo com diferentes volumes de lidocaína a 1%
Fonseca, Neuber Martins;Mandim, Beatriz Lemos;Ruzi, Roberto Araújo;Tavares, Fabiana Rosa;
Revista Brasileira de Anestesiologia , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-70942006000300003
Abstract: background and objectives: subgluteus sciatic nerve block has been successfully described in a previous study and is one more option among several possible approaches. the sciatic nerve becomes superficial at inferior gluteus maximus muscle where it is easily located and accessed with minor discomfort and low risk of accidental great vessels puncture. our study aimed at evaluating this simplified sciatic nerve block approach with different 1% lidocaine volumes. methods: participated in this study 40 patients submitted to leg or foot procedures, who were distributed in two groups. patients were placed in the prone position after monitoring and blockade was induced at mid gluteofemoral sulcus with the aid of neurostimulator and with beveled insulated 5 cm needle, with 300 mg (g1) or 200 mg (g2) of 1% plain lidocaine. results: used volumes and concentrations have promoted adequate anesthesia in all patients. blockade time was 8.6 ± 5.7 min (g1) and 5.6 ± 5.7 min (g2). onset time was 5.98 ± 1.4 min (g1) and 6.7 ± 2.9 min (g2). sensory and motor block duration was 243 ± 37 min and 152 ± 30 min (g1), and 235 ± 39 min and 149 ± 59 min (g2), respectively. there were no statistically significant differences between groups. conclusions: this is an effective and easy approach and total anesthetic dose may be decreased without impairing quality.
Anestesia em paciente com síndrome de Marshall-Smith: relato de caso
Mandim, Beatriz Lemos da Silva;Fonseca, Neuber Martins;Ruzi, Roberto Araújo;Temer, Paulo Cezar Silva;
Revista Brasileira de Anestesiologia , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-70942007000400007
Abstract: background and objectives: the marshall-smith syndrome is a rare disease characterized by facial dysmorphism, accelerated osseous maturation, retarded neuropsychomotor development, and abnormalities of the airways. patients with this syndrome have a high risk of developing anesthetic complications, especially concerning the maintenance of the airways. there are very few data in the anesthetic literature regarding this syndrome. the objective of this report was to show the difficulties and anesthetic management in a 28-day old child with this syndrome, who underwent surgery for correction of choanal atresia under general anesthesia. case report: a male child, 28 days old, weighing 2.8 kg, undergoing general anesthesia for surgical correction of choanal atresia. the child presented the typical manifestations of the marshall-smith syndrome, with a narrow thorax, pectus excavatum, large hands and feet, long neck, facial dysmorphism, high and arched palate, and accelerated osseous maturation. anesthetic induction was done with a mask with 100% o2 associated with sevoflurane. due to the possibility of a difficult intubation, tracheal intubation with a fibrobronchoscope was scheduled. after tracheal intubation and assisted manual ventilation, 1.5 mg of rocuronium were administered and, after ten minutes, the patient developed bradycardia (80 bpm), severe hypoxemia (o2 saturation of 30%), and manual ventilation through the tracheal tube became impossible. an urgent tracheostomy was done and the surgical procedure was cancelled. conclusion: in cases of anesthetic-surgical emergencies, in which the child does not ventilate and tracheal intubation is not possible, there is desaturation and bradycardia, requiring fast and appropriate decision making to guarantee adequate pulmonary ventilation. these patients need careful evaluation of the airways to identify upper and lower airways obstruction. during anesthesia, spontaneous ventilation should be maintained during induction unt
Pneumotórax espontaneo num pulm?o vicariante: A spontaneous pneumothorax in a "buffalo chest"
Marinho,Anabela; Lima,Beatriz; Araújo,Idalina; Bastos,Pedro; Marques,J Agostinho; Gomes,Isabel;
Revista Portuguesa de Pneumologia , 2007,
Abstract: spontaneous contralateral pneumothorax after pneumonectomy is a rare condition. a high index of suspicion is required for a correct diagnosis. management can be challenging, as surgical intervention, if necessary, is a very high risk procedure. chemical pleurodesis can be a simple and effective measure in cases with no major air leak. we describe the case of a 21-year-old female with spontaneous pneumothorax in a single lung, which posed several diagnostic and therapeutic problems. the presence of a "buffalo chest" made the initial chest x-ray interpretation difficult. the patient had an important air leak without complete pulmonary expansion and thoracic surgery was considered of risk. accordingly, instillation of talc slurry through one of the thoracic drains was undertaken with eventual resolution. we are convinced that bronco-pleural fistula resolution was facilitated by slurry talc, despite complete lung expansion never having been achieved.

Revista Brasileira em Promo??o da Saúde , 2012,
Abstract: Objective: To investigate the conception of Health Promotion among nurses working in the Family Health Program. Methods: This was a qualitative descriptive study, conducted in five Primary Health Care Units that are connected to the Family Health Program, in the city of Juiz de Fora - MG, Brazil, from March to April, 2010. Subjects were five nurses, one from each participating unit, randomly selected, according to their availability and acceptance to participate in the study. Data collection used semi-structured interview technique. The speeches were analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: From the analysis of the speeches it was evident that nurses misunderstand health promotion and prevention. They unanimously cited the role of educator played by nurses. Conclusion: The nurses were found to have a distorted conception of health promotion and health practices are still developed based on a preventive approach. Concept of health promotion generates questions among the studied group, therefore, it should be more discussed by nurses.
