Abstract: objective: to measure radiologically obtained skull diameters and, based on these data, calculating the cranial index and size to compare with diameter measurements and indices reported in the literature, particularly those reported by haas. materials and methods: the present study evaluated 732 individuals with no cranial disease, whose skull diameters were measured, subsequently, the authors calculated the cranial index and size which demonstrate the different phases of the skull growth by inner-table to inner-table measurements. results: the comparative study of diameters averages by inner-table measurements has demonstrated a clearly progressive skull growth in the first year of life for both genders, and a slower growth as from the second year. overall diameters averages did not present any significant difference between male and female individuals. conclusion: cranial index and size are good skull growth indicators, especially in the first four years of life, a period characterized by an accelerated growth in the first year and a moderate growth until the fourth year. after this age, a slight and stable growth occurs with a decrease in the statistical value. no statistically significant difference was found for both genders. it is recommended that mean diameters are utilized for both genders; and it is suggested that the cranial index is utilized until four years of age, and the cranial size after the age of four, as the ideal parameter for following up the skull growth.

Atelectasia pulmonar em recém-nascidos: etiologia e aspectos radiológicos = Pulmonary atelectasis in newborn infants: etiology and radiological aspects
Alvares, Beatriz Regina et al.
Scientia Medica , 2012,
Aims: To describe the main risk factors and the radiological findings of pulmonary atelectasis in newborns. Source of data: A literature review was conducted for the period of 2010/2011, through books and articles published over the past 30 years, obtained from the databases PubMed, SciELO and BIREME, using the descriptors: pulmonary atelectasis, diagnosis, infant, neonate, newborn. Summary of findings: Radiological signs of pulmonary atelectasis are related to volume loss, with fissural, hilar and mediastinal displacement, and diaphragmatic elevation toward the affected lung lobe or segment. The ribs of the affected hemithorax may have diminished spaces. Compensatory hyperinflation of the lung is present and the collapsed portions show increased radiopacity, with a triangular shape in at least one of radiographic projections. In newborn infants, the main etiological factors are mechanical ventilation with positive pressure, pneumonia, meconium aspiration syndrome, gastroesophageal reflux, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, pleural effusion and pneumothorax. Conclusions: Pres
A cidade simbólica: inscri es no tempo e no espa o
Guimar?es Neto, Regina Beatriz
Estudos Ibero Americanos , 2006,
The central proposal of this article is to analyze the representations about the cities that emerge in the fragments of several reports and records of their inhabitants. In the “reports of the space” men and women codify and distinguish symbolically spaces and places, which are connected to several temporal dimensions. Gathered in a narrative plot, they show cultural practices that are organizers of the spaces and constitutive of the urban configurations.

Abstract: internal motivations associated with the increasing search for aesthetic plastic surgery (aps) have been previously investigated without conclusive results. our objective was to investigate personality traits and body image satisfaction of women seeking aps by individual evaluation of 37 women interested in breast augmentation (mammoplasty) and/or liposuction (group 1), and 41 women not seeking aps (group 2). it was applied the body image satisfaction scale (biss) and comrey personality scales (cps). statistical analysis (student t-test, p < .05) has shown significant difference between groups for factor 1 (satisfaction with self appearance) of biss as well as for cps t (confidence vs. defensive attitude) and m (mascu-linity vs. femininity) scales. it suggests that women in g1 are less satisfied with their body image, have increased defensive attitude and greater affective sensibility.

Abstract: This paper presents the results of a study aimed at describing the treatment given by schools, family, and social group to pregnant adolescents and at examining sex education in the family and school environments. Theoretically, we revisited some approaches concerning gender studies. We show quantitative results obtained from a structured questionnaire applied to a sample of pregnant students at a state-owned elementary school in Novo Hamburgo, state of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil). The results indicate that 87.5% of the adolescents informed they got pregnant because they were reckless about contraceptive methods, which was confirmed when they answered why they ended up pregnant. This association is statistically significant and we understand that, based on the social group to which these adolescents belong, being a teen mother is natural, as the recklessness associated with protection during sexual intercourse is directly related to their desire to get pregnant, a common, easily accepted, and highly value behavior in the social group in which they are inserted. Most pregnant adolescents who drop out of school are not encouraged by schools or their families to go back to studying; adolescents are abject bodies as they are bodies whose lives are not regarded as “lives” and whose materiality is seen as “unimportant” by schools (Butler, 2015). Adolescents seem to understand that their importance and value just exist when they repeat what is reinforced by their social group: girls get pregnant early on.

Objective: With the purpose of subsidizing the nursing care to the growing family, this study aimed to identify the situations the family experiences when they come home with their first child, extending the focus of the binomial mother-child in the puerperal period to the whole family in the household. Materials and Methods: A qualitative study and a descriptive-exploratory method were used. Five families were observed for a certain period of time after childbirth. Results and Data Analysis: The analysis of contents revealed the following categories: family changes; organization of the daily life; the care among family members; the family’s feelings and perceptions; family relations; and family needs. The connection of the family with health professionals, acquired through interaction and trust, is considered to facilitate the educational actions and the continuity of the process of providing health services to the families. Final Considerations: It is recommended that the health services develop actions which consider the families in this stage of the family’s vital cycle and that this reference is included as part of the nurse’s academic training.

Abstract: There is consistent empirical support that demonstrates the relationship between phonological deficits of developmental dyslexics and their reading difficulties. However, the morphological skills—which also play an important role in the development of alphabetic writing—are seldom investigated among children and adolescents with dyslexia. The focus of this study was to analyse reading patterns according to the dual route model and verify the performance of each subtype of dyslexic in tests of morphological awareness. Participants were nine students classified as surface or phonological dyslexics through their performance in an isolated words-reading task. Four tests were applied to the participants to assess their knowledge of derivational morphology, and two tests focused on their knowledge of inflectional morphology. The hypothesis that guided this research was that students with different reading patterns would also present different performances on morphological tests. This hypothesis was confirmed only for derivational morphology, in which a higher performance was observed among participants with phonological dyslexia. It is concluded that metamorphological skills may serve as facilitators of reading in students with developmental dyslexia, and a focus on the development of these skills is suggested as a strategy to promote the reading skills of these students.
