Abstract: background: low-level laser therapy (lllt) has been reported to modulate the healing of wounds by inducing an increase in fibroblast number associated with increased expression of the cytokine transforming growth factor-β2 (tgf-β2). objective: in the present study, the effect of lllt on expression of cox2 at the site of tissue repair was evaluated, using an experimental model with non obese diabetic mice (nod) to study cutaneous wound healing. methods: thirty nod mice were used, of which 14 were diabetic and were divided into two groups: group i (n=7) underwent a surgical procedure of skin wounds and group ii (n=7) underwent a surgical procedure of skin wounds and treated with lllt. group ii was submitted to lllt in the following parameters: 15 mw of power, dose of 3.8 j/cm2 and exposure time of 20 seconds. seven days after surgery and after laser application, animals were euthanized with an overdose of anesthesia and tissue samples were collected for subsequent histological analysis, histomorphometry and immunohistochemistry. results: the lllt has promoted the inhibition of cox2 expression in skin wounds in mice diabetic. taken together the results suggest that lllt modulate the expression of cox2 improved the control of inflammatory reaction in cutaneous wound lesions in nod mice. conclusion: taken together, the results suggested that lllt is able to negatively modulate the expression of cox2 enzyme contributing to the inflammatory response in cutaneous wounds in nod mice.

Revista Brasileira de Ginecologia e Obstetrícia , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-72032012000600005
Abstract: purpose: to evaluate the correlation between maternal waist circumference measured before the 12th week of gestation and serum leptin levels during pregnancy, as well as to compare the leptin levels of women with and without abdominal obesity diagnosed in early pregnancy. methods: prospective study including 40 pregnant women receiving low-risk prenatal care, older than 20 years, nonsmokers, with singleton pregnancies and without chronic disease. waist circumference was measured before the 12th week and serum leptin levels were measured between the 9th and 12th, 25th and 28th and 34th and 37th weeks of gestation. according to waist circumference measurement, the cohort was divided into two groups: with and without abdominal obesity. the mann-whitney and χ2 tests were used to assess the differences between groups. the pearson correlation coeffient was used to assess the association between waist circumference and serum leptin levels during pregnancy. the level of significance was set at p<0.05. results: the mean weight and body mass index of patients with abdominal obesity (74.4±11.0 kg/28.9±4.1) was higher than that of patients without abdominal obesity (55.6±5.9 kg/21.1±2.4) (p=0.001). the mean leptin levels in pregnant patients with abdominal obesity (41.9±3.5 ng/ml) was higher than in patients without abdominal obesity (23.6±2.7 ng/ml) (p<0.0002). a positive correlation was obtained between the waist circumference measured during the same period and the mean serum leptin levels (r=0.7; p<0.0001). conclusions: waist circumference measured before the 12th week of pregnancy is a valid and simple method to predict the serum leptin levels throughout pregnancy. pregnant women with abdominal obesity diagnosed before 12th week have higher mean serum leptin levels during pregnancy than those without abdominal obesity.

Jornal Vascular Brasileiro , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1677-54492007000300009
Abstract: low-level laser therapy is an important method for the treatment of healing processes, and several experimental studies have been carried out in search of a greater understanding of its therapeutic possibilities. the objective of this study was to review pathogenetic aspects of soft tissue repair to better understand skin lesion healing and the role of low-intensity laser in the progression of tissue healing. this study consists of a concise review of scientific literature data on the use of low-level laser and its influence on wound healing. many studies have extensively covered the effects of using laser radiation in tissues, describing its beneficial aspects in tissue healing. however, many unanswered questions demand research on the mechanism of action and on parameters of low-level laser use in different stages of wound repair to clarify how this method acts at a cell level in healing processes.

Abstract: purpose: this study aimed to characterize the effect of bovine hydroxyapatite particles (ha) on the early stages of bone repairing in a rat femur defect model. methods: a non-critical 2 mm diameter bone defect was made in both femurs of 25 male albino wistar rats. the left femurs defects were filled with ha and the right femurs defects were just let to fill with blood. five animals were sacrificed at the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th or 14th post-surgery day and bone tissue sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin for comparison of inflammatory response by light microscopy. histomorphometrical analysis of the newly formed bone was evaluated at the three last periods, using independent t-student test to compare both groups at each period (a=0.05). results: histological analyses showed same standard of bone repair on first and third day; however, from the fifth post-surgery day there was a higher deposit of collagen fibers surrounding the hydroxyapatite particles and a greater thickness of the opposite side periosteum. there was no significant histomorphometrical difference between groups at all periods. conclusion: it can be concluded that hydroxyapatite does not accelerate the early-stage of bone repairing, despite of induction of a higher deposit of collagen fibers.
Down-regulation of transforming growth factor beta-2 expression is associated with the reduction of cyclosporin induced gingival overgrowth in rats treated with roxithromycin: an experimental study

BMC Oral Health , 2009, DOI: 10.1186/1472-6831-9-33
Abstract: In this study, we created an experimental model for assessing the therapeutic effect of roxithromycin in GO and the expression of transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta2) through immunohistochemistry. We used four groups of rats totaling 32 individuals. GO was induced during five weeks and drug treatment was given on the 6th week as follows: group 1 received saline; group 2 received CsA and was treated with saline on the 6th week; group 3 received CsA and, on the 6th week, ampicilin; and group 4 received CsA during 5 weeks and, on the 6th week, was treated with roxithromycin. The results demonstrated that roxithromycin treatment was effective in reducing cyclosporine-induced GO in rats. Both epithelial and connective tissue showed a decrease in thickness and a significant reduction in TGF-beta2 expression, with a lower number of fibroblasts, reduction in fibrotic areas and decrease in inflammatory infiltrate. The present data suggest that the down-regulation of TGF-beta2 expression may be an important mechanism of action by which roxithromycin inhibits GO.Gingival overgrowth (GO) is a common side effect of certain drugs, such as phenytoin, calcium channel blockers and cyclosporin [1,2].Cyclosporine (CsA) has been widely used to prevent organ transplant rejection and to treat various immunodiseases [2]. It selectively suppresses helper T-cell function and modulates the network of inflammatory cytokines. However, CsA is associated with several adverse effects, such as nephrotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, hirsutism and gingival overgrowth (GO) [1,3,4]. The average prevalence of dentate transplant patients who develop cyclosporine induced GO is around 30%, with variation between 10 and 85% [5-9]. When associated with other medication, such as calcium channel blocker antihypertensives, this prevalence increases, as does the gravity of the complication, and, consequently, the risk [10-13].Fibrosis, one of the most important finding in GO, is the result of a variety of biochem

BMC Oral Health , 2008, DOI: 10.1186/1472-6831-8-25
Abstract: In this study, oral mucosa samples of squamous cells carcinoma were analyzed, separated according to their histological classification as well as the phenotypical profile of the cells comprising the peritumoral inflammatory infiltrate was investigated by immunohistochemical method, in addiction, the cell proliferation index via protein Ki67 expression was determinated. The T lymphocytes made up most of this inflammatory infiltrate, and among these cells, there was a predominance of T CD8 lymphocytes relative to the T CD4 lymphocytes. The B lymhocytes were the second most visualized leucocyte cell type followed by macrophages and neutrophils. The immunohistochemical assessment of Ki-67 positive cells revealed a greater expression of this protein in samples of undifferentiated squamous cells carcinoma. The results suggest that the cellular immune response is the main defense mechanism in squamous cells carcinoma of oral mucosa, expressed by the large number of T lymphocytes and macrophages, and that the greatest intensity of local response may be associated with the best prognosis.Malignant neoplasms of the mouth comprise a heterogeneous group of lesions that differ among themselves as to risk factors, clinical aspects, and histologic origin. Among the different tumors of this group, squamous cells carcinoma is the most prevalent histologic type and represents most cases of diagnosed oral cancer [1-4]. Despite prevention campaigns of several governmental health care programs and expansion of the network of specialized professionals who prioritize the diagnosis of premalignant lesions of the mouth in the different health care services currently active, 7% of the world's population is affected by oral cancer, and it is, therefore, a worldwide health concern [4].Squamous cells carcinoma originates in the epithelium that lines the mouth. This fact is extremely important when we consider the constant exposure of the oral cavity to local intrinsic stimuli associated with the

Abstract: Thirty hearts from adult individuals, 15 from male individuals and 15 female individuals, from the Anatomy Institute of Severino Sombra University were used. After a paramedian incision in the sternocostal joint, a careful dissection was performed in order to expose and identify the sinoatrial nodal artery (SAN), a right or left coronary artery branch. The domain was registered as right, if the right coronary branch irrigated the SAN. The same was listed for the left coronary artery. In addition, cases were both arteries irrigated SAN also were listed. All data, including hearts mass according to gender definition, were compared with previous reports through the variance analysis test (One-way ANOVA) and the post-hoc test of Newman-Keuls with p 0.05. Groups were defined as MHL: Hearts from male individuals, data from literature; FHL: Hearts from female individuals, data from literature; MHS: Hearts from male individuals, data obtained from the present study; FHS: Hearts from female individuals, data obtained from the present study. Data from MHL was 22% heavier than FHL group. MHS group was 41% heavier than FHS group. Only FHS was 11% lighter than FHL (p<0.05). Right coronary domain was present in 80% and 100% of the studied cases, male and female, respectively. Only 20% of the hearts from MHS group showed left coronary domain. No cases of irrigation form both arteries were observed in the present study. The present results indicated higher right sinoatrial nodal artery dominance in all cases studied regardless gender and differences on heart weight were similar to those found in literature descriptions.
