Drop Size Measurements in a Laboratory Scale Venturi Scrubber

Abstract: venturi scrubbers are high efficiency gas cleaners in which suspended particles are removed from gas streams by droplets formed by liquid atomisation, usually in the venturi throat. the size of the droplets formed is of fundamental importance to the performance of the equipment, both in terms of pressure drop and collection efficiency. in this study, drop sizes in a cylindrical laboratory scale venturi scrubber were measured using a laser diffraction technique. gas velocity and liquid to gas ratios varied from 50 to 90 m/s and 0.5 to 2.0 l/m3, respectively. water was inserted as perpendicular jets at the beginning of the throat. measurements were performed at three positions: two located along the throat, and the last one at the end of the diffuser. the data presented here are a typical example of pneumatic atomisation and can be relevant to other industrial applications such as combustion and engine technology. finally, results are compared to available correlations and the validity of these equations is discussed.

Abstract: Thermal properties, as well as the dynamic mechanical behavior of recycled polypropylene composites with vegetal leaves contents, were studied by thermal analysis techniques: TG/DTG, DTA, and DMA. Composites made of polypropylene recycled with 1%, 5%, 10%, and 15% ww?1 vegetal leaves were prepared using the melt blending technique. The results revealed that the viscoelastic properties were influenced by fiber content; however, the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the composite did not show significant changes to the fiber content. In the end, the composite with 5% of palm leaves and PP recycled presented the most promising results since this one kept the solid characteristic on the dynamic mechanical properties. This work presents an environmental friendly alternative to manage natural waste, also being a form of reducing polymeric materials waste.
Anestesia em broncofibroscopia: Estudo randomizado comparando o uso tópico da lidocaína ou em associa??o com o propofol, o alfentanil ou o midazolam

Abstract: a broncofibroscopia (bfb) é efectuada geralmente sob anestesia local, com ou sem seda??o. o objectivo deste estudo é escolher o protocolo anestésico utilizado durante a bfb que tenha menos complica??es e seja mais bem tolerado. este estudo prospectivo randomizado analisou 80 doentes que foram submetidos a bfb. os doentes foram randomizados e divididos em quatro grupos de 20 doentes cada, de acordo com a combina??o anestésica utilizada: 200 mg de lidocaína tópica1; 200 mg de lidocaína tópica e propofol, 2 mg/kg2; 200 mg de lidocaína tópica e alfentanil 20 mcg/kg3; ou 200 mg de lidocaína tópica e midazolan 0,005 mg/kg4. durante o exame foram avaliados diversos scores de acordo com diferentes variáveis e, posteriormente, avaliados os scores mais baixos e o respectivo índice de complica??es. os resultados foram avaliados estatisticamente e a análise revelou que a combina??o2 200 mg de lidocaína tópica e propofol, 2 mg/kg, teve uma eficácia superior às outras associa??es.

Abstract: a culture of resistance in the semi-arid, expressed by mentalities and values, goes against the economic potential of sheep and goat raising, considered as an inferior activity when compared to the cattle raising, historically linked to social status and prestige. this paper attempts to shed light on aspects that make possible to clarify the roots of the cognitive apparatus that supports this view, resorting to it to the production of relevant authors dealing with the issue of displacement of colonizer and livestock in the hinterlands. ultimately, it seeks evidence of the influence of the historical process of economic and social organization of space on the present.

Inflection points and asymptotic lines on Lagrangean surfaces

Abstract: We describe the structure of the asymptotic lines near an inflection point of a Lagrangean surface, proving that in the generic situation it corresponds to two of the three possible cases when the discriminant curve has a cusp singularity. Besides being stable in general, inflection points are proved to exist on a compact Lagrangean surface whenever its Euler characteristic does not vanish.

Abstract: Today’s search for alternative sources of energy to reduce the use of fossil fuels is motivated by environmental, socioeconomic and political reasons. The use of agro-industrial and municipal wastes of plant origin for ethanol production appears to be the best option to solve the dilemma of using food sources to produce biofuels, since it adds value to these wastes in eco-efficient processes. This paper highlights the potential of agro-industrial and municipal wastes for cellulosic ethanol production.

Abstract: Curcumin is a natural polyphenol with anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. Its therapeutic potential is substantially hindered by the rather low water solubility and bioavailability, hence the need for suitable carriers. In this study, we show that self-assembled nanogels obtained from hydrophobically modified dextrin are effective curcumin nanocarriers. The stability and loading efficiency of curcumin-loaded nanogel depends on the nanogel/curcumin ratio. Higher stability of the formulation is achieved in water than in PBS buffer, as evaluated by dynamic light scattering and fluorescence measurements. The in vitro release profile, using sink conditions, indicates that dextrin nanogel may perform as a suitable carrier for the controlled release of curcumin. Biological activity of curcumin-loaded nanogel in HeLa cell cultures was assessed using the MTS assay.
