A New Method for Predicting the UL of Circular CFST Columns  [PDF]

Concrete filled steel tube structures have gained booming development in recent decades, especially in China. Simplified methods have been proposed in design codes, such as the Eurocode 4 (EC4) and the China engineering and construction specification (CECS). In EC4, the confinement effect is reasonably related to slenderness and load eccentricity. The CECS method is much straight forward in that the slenderness ratio and load eccentricity are treated as independent reduction factors. To make use of the advantages of both the CECS and the EC4 methods, the CECS method is modified to consider the confinement effect associated with slenderness and load eccentricity. It is shown that the proposed method can predict well the ultimate load capacity of circular section concrete filled steel tube columns.

Current Situation and Associated Factors of Withdrawing or Withholding Life Support to Patients in an Intensive Care Unit of Cancer Center in China

Abstract: Objectives To investigate the current situation and analyze the associated factors of withdrawing or withholding life support in the intensive care unit (ICU) of our cancer center. Methods Three hundred and twenty-two cancer patients in critical status were admitted to our ICU in 2010 and 2011. They were included in the study and were classified into two groups: withdrawing or withholding life support (WWLS), and full life support (FLS). Demographic information and clinical data were collected and compared between the two groups. Factors associated with withdrawing or withholding life support were analyzed with univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results Eighty-two of the 322 cases (25.5% of all) made the decisions to withdraw or withhold life support. Emergency or critical condition at hospital admission, higher scores of Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II) in 12 hours after ICU admission, financial difficulties and humanistic care requirements are important factors associated with withdrawing or withholding life support. Conclusions Withdrawing or withholding life support is not uncommon in critically ill cancer patients in China. Characteristics and associated factors of the decision-making are related to the current medical system, medical resources and traditional culture of the country.

The Early Paleozoic paleogeography of the North China block and the other major blocks of China

Abstract: With the summarization of the Early Paleozoic paleomagnetic data recently obtained from the three major blocks of China, the Early Paleozoic (i.e. Cambrian and Ordovician) paleogeographic positions of the North China, South China and Tarim blocks were discussed in detail. The North China, South China and Tarim blocks were inferred to be located adjacent to East Gondwana in low latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere during the Early Cambrian. During the Early-Middle Ordovician, the South China and Tarim blocks were also located in low latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere with some affinities of the Gondwanaland, whereas the North China block may have episodically separated from the Gondwanaland, and might be sited close to the North America and Siberia. The reestablished paleogeographic configurations are in agreement with the studies on the biogeography, paleoclimate and sedimental facies of the North China and South China blocks.
Reducing Electricity Demand Charge for Data Centers with Partial Execution

Abstract: Data centers consume a large amount of energy and incur substantial electricity cost. In this paper, we study the familiar problem of reducing data center energy cost with two new perspectives. First, we find, through an empirical study of contracts from electric utilities powering Google data centers, that demand charge per kW for the maximum power used is a major component of the total cost. Second, many services such as Web search tolerate partial execution of the requests because the response quality is a concave function of processing time. Data from Microsoft Bing search engine confirms this observation. We propose a simple idea of using partial execution to reduce the peak power demand and energy cost of data centers. We systematically study the problem of scheduling partial execution with stringent SLAs on response quality. For a single data center, we derive an optimal algorithm to solve the workload scheduling problem. In the case of multiple geo-distributed data centers, the demand of each data center is controlled by the request routing algorithm, which makes the problem much more involved. We decouple the two aspects, and develop a distributed optimization algorithm to solve the large-scale request routing problem. Trace-driven simulations show that partial execution reduces cost by $3\%--10.5\%$ for one data center, and by $15.5\%$ for geo-distributed data centers together with request routing.
RepFlow: Minimizing Flow Completion Times with Replicated Flows in Data Centers

Abstract: Short TCP flows that are critical for many interactive applications in data centers are plagued by large flows and head-of-line blocking in switches. Hash-based load balancing schemes such as ECMP aggravate the matter and result in long-tailed flow completion times (FCT). Previous work on reducing FCT usually requires custom switch hardware and/or protocol changes. We propose RepFlow, a simple yet practically effective approach that replicates each short flow to reduce the completion times, without any change to switches or host kernels. With ECMP the original and replicated flows traverse distinct paths with different congestion levels, thereby reducing the probability of having long queueing delay. We develop a simple analytical model to demonstrate the potential improvement of RepFlow. Extensive NS-3 simulations and Mininet implementation show that RepFlow provides 50%--70% speedup in both mean and 99-th percentile FCT for all loads, and offers near-optimal FCT when used with DCTCP.
Spot Transit: Cheaper Internet Transit for Elastic Traffic

Abstract: We advocate to create a \emph{spot} Internet transit market, where transit is sold using the under-utilized backbone capacity at a lower price. The providers can improve profit by capitalizing the perishable capacity, and customers can buy transit on-demand without a minimum commitment level for elastic traffic, and as a result improve its surplus (i.e. utility gains). We conduct a systematic study of the economical benefits of spot transit both theoretically and empirically. We propose a simple analytical framework with a general demand function, and solve the pricing problem of maximizing the expected profit, taking into account the revenue loss of regular transit when spot transit traffic hikes. We rigorously prove the price advantage of spot transit, as well as profit and surplus improvements for tier-1 ISPs and customers, respectively. Using real-world price data and traffic statistics of 6 IXPs with more than 1000 ISPs, we quantitatively evaluate spot transit and show that significant financial benefits can be achieved in both absolute and relative terms, robust to parameter values.

Abstract: This paper reported the enantioseparation of Naproxen, Ketoprofen and Etodolac on tartardiamide-DMB chiral stationary phase (CHI-DMB) and (R,R) –DNB-DPEDA chiral stationary phase,using hexane as the mobile phase with various modifiers. The influence of the mobile phase composition including the type and concentration of the modifiers in hexane and the structures of the analytes on the chiral separation was studied. The results indicated that the steric structure of the solute, especially the environment of the chiral carbon, was the predominant factor for the chiral recognition. The type, the steric structure and the concentration of the modifiers also influence the retention factor and the resolution. The chiral recognition mechanism of the analytes on CHI-DMB and (R,R) –DNB-DPEDA was also discussed. The hydrogen-bonding interaction played an important role on enantioseparation on CHI-DMB, so did the π-π interaction. On (R,R) –DNB-DPEDA the π-π interaction was the key for the solutes retention and enantioseparation, while hydrogen-bonding interaction was not important. Additionally, it has been demonstrated that enantioselectivity and retention was also dependent upon the nature and functional groups on the aromatic ring of solutes and CSP.
