Abstract: colheu-se uma amostra de sangue de um albatroz thalassarche chlororhynchos (gmelin, 1789), recolhido pela polícia do meio ambiente de ubatuba, sp, para análises da bioquímica do soro. o objetivo dessas análises foi o de apontar possíveis altera??es dos parametros bioquímicos, visando facilitar futuras casas para reabilita??o de aves. nenhuma anormalidade foi encontrada e o animal morreu após três dias da captura.

Abstract: in the latest years, the worldwide production of aluminum is increasing and for the companies to keep their competitiveness it is necessary to reduce the average cost of the metal production. one of the alternatives is to increase the refractories working life used in anode baking furnaces and their production capacity. both strategies may result in a higher anode quality and reduction of the furnace maintenance costs. this paper aims to present the thermo-mechanical characterization of the refractory bricks used in anode baking furnaces and their resistance to chemical attack. the results indicated that the selection of the most suitable composition depends on a systemic analysis involving the high temperature properties, chemical resistance and the operational practices of the furnace.

Abstract: finding sustainable applications for the bauxite residue is one of the leading challenges in the aluminium industry. for this purpose, the geopolymerization could become an interesting alternative, because this technique could make use of some of the typical characteristics of the bauxite residue, such as its alkalinity and expressive silicates and aluminates contents, resulting in solid materials with similar properties to usual traditional ceramics. in this work, the properties, processing and possible applications of such materials were analyzed. besides the apparent porosity and the mechanical resistance tests, the obtained samples were also submitted to a leaching test, aiming to a preliminary evaluation of the potential environmental risks of application that a supposed product would represent, and which procedures could favour its passivation. as the main results, it was possible to verify that firing at 800 °c allowed some compositions to reach compression resistance values up to 30 mpa, and a leaching resistance closer to a common pressed clay brick, which makes the building materials a potential area of application for the bauxite residue geopolymers, based on the enormous consumption capacity of this area and its increasing demand for more sustainable products.

Abstract: this study reports the occurrence of learedius learedi price 1934 (digenea, spirorchiidae) in chelonia mydas linnaeus 1758 (testudines, chelonidae) in brazil. eleven animals were included in this study, 54.6 % of them were parasitized. two hundred and fifty five parasite specimens were recovered from heart, liver, spleen, lungs, kidneys, mesenterium, and body wash. results contribute to the knowledge about the helminthofauna of marine chelonian and their geographical distribution. this is the first report of l. learedi in the southwestern atlantic.
Peanut response to lime and molybdenum application in low pH soils

Abstract: liming acid soils is considered to assure the availability of mo in crops. additionally, in peanuts (arachis hypogaea l.) the positive response to liming is associated to a better supply of ca+2, mo for the nitrogenase-complex activity, and other non-nitrogen fixing activities of the crop. this study was thus undertaken to assess the effect of lime, mo, and the lime-mo interaction on peanut crop, on an acid ultisol at the mococa experimental station, instituto agron?mico, s?o paulo state, brazil, from 1987 to 1990. a randomized complete block design with four replications, in a 4 x 4 factorial arrangement, was used in the study. the factors included four lime rates (0, 2, 4, and 6 t ha-1) broadcast and incorporated into the soil, and mo (0, 100, 200, and 300 g ha-1) as (nh4)2moo4 applied as seed dressing. lime was applied once at the beginning of the study while mo was applied at every planting. peanut seed cv 'tatu' was used. significant increase in peanut kernel yield with liming was only evident in the absence of mo, whereas the peanut response to mo was observed in two out of the three harvests. a higher yield response (28 % increase) was found when mo was applied without liming. soil molybdenum availability, as indicated by plant leaf analysis, increased significantly when lime was applied. molybdenum fertilization led to higher leaf n content, which in turn increased peanut yield in treatments with smaller lime doses.

Abstract: the literature shows different tests and techniques for evaluating the thermal shock damage. additionally, it is known that, for certain applications, this type of wear mechanism is one of the main causes of fluid flash calciner refractory degradation. within this context and in order to find the best way to reproduce the refractory lining service conditions, this work was carried out to point out which thermal shock test and damage assessment method are more suitable to evaluate these materials. this analysis was based on a literature review and laboratory experiments, comparing and evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of the most important methods available. finally, with the support of the swot tool it was possible to evaluate whether the method adopted by the authors of this work is appropriated for helping the selection of the refractories for calciners application.
Enhanced Star Formation in Narrow Line Seyfert 1 AGN revealed by Spitzer

Abstract: We present new low resolution Spitzer mid-infrared spectroscopy of a sample of 20 ROSAT selected local Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s). We detect strong AGN continuum in all and clear PAH emission in 70% of the sources. The 6.2 micron PAH luminosity spans three orders of magnitudes, from ~10^(39) erg/s to ~10^(42) erg/s providing strong evidence for intense ongoing star formation in the circumnuclear regions of these sources. Using the IRS/Spitzer archive we gather a large number of additional NLS1s and their broad line counterparts (BLS1s) and constructed NLS1 and BLS1 sub-samples to compare them in various ways. The comparison shows a clear separation according to FWHM(H_beta) such that objects with narrower broad H_beta lines are the strongest PAH emitters. We test this division in various ways trying to remove biases due to luminosity and aperture size. Specifically, we find that star formation activity around NLS1 AGN is larger than around BLS1 of the same AGN luminosity. The above result seems to hold over the entire range of distance and luminosity. Moreover the star formation rate is higher in low black hole mass and high L/L_Edd systems indicating that black hole growth and star formation are occurring simultaneously.
Using scientific evidence to inform public policy on the long distance transportation of animals in South America

Abstract: A brief overview of the transportation of livestock in South America is given, with emphasis on scientific reports produced in Chile. Aspects such as journey distances covered, stocking densities used and general handling characteristics, mainly regarding cattle transport, are discussed in relation to their effects on blood variables related to stress as well as on meat quality. A lot of the results are being transferred through talks, training courses and written material to producers, transporters and slaughterhouse personnel; this has produced awareness of changes that need to be made to improve transport and handling conditions. At government level, scientific evidence has shown that existing regulations, usually based on information from more developed countries, need to be complemented by or adapted to local conditions in each country.
