Solid polymeric electrolyte of poly(ethylene)oxide-50% epoxidized natural rubber-lithium triflate (PEO-ENR50-LiCF3SO3)  [PDF]

Abstract: A solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) films consist-ing of polyethylene oxide (PEO), 50% epoxi-dized natural rubber (ENR50) and LiCF3SO3 with various compositions of PEO-ENR50 and vari-ous weight percentage of LiCF3SO3 were pre-pared by solution casting technique. The poly-mer electrolyte films were characterized using DSC, XRD and AC impedance spectroscopy. The SPE with the PEO-ENR50 composition of 70-30 shows the highest conductivity of 4.2 × 10-5 Scm-1 at the 15 wt.% of LiCF3SO3 compared with the other composition of PEO/ENR50. This composition was then chosen to investigate the effect of LiCF3SO3 on the thermal property, structure and conductivity of the electrolyte. The highest room temperature conductivity of 1.4 × 10-4 Scm-1 was achieved at 20 wt.% of LiCF3SO3. The conductivity result is supported by the DSC and XRD analysis which showed the semi- crystalline nature of PEO turning to amor-phous state due to the increase in LiCF3SO3 content.
Convexity-Preserving Scattered Data Interpolation

Abstract: This study deals with constructing a convexity-preserving bivariate C1 interpolants to scattered data whenever the original data are convex. Sufficient conditions on lower bound of Bezier points are derived in order to ensure that surfaces comprising cubic Bezier triangular patches are always convex and satisfy C1 continuity conditions. Initial gradients at the data sites are estimated and then modified if necessary to ensure that these conditions are satisfied. The construction is local and easy to be implemented. Graphical examples are presented using several test functions.

Abstract: Revisit intention has been highlighted as an important research topic in competitive market of tourism destinations. Despite the considerable number of research on repeat visitors, it remains unclear why people undertake repeat visits and what kind of characteristics hold repeat visitors. This research aims to identify factors influencing repeat visitors to Sabah, Malaysia. The results of this study indicated that “destination image” and “relaxation and recreation” were the most important destination attributes and travel motives for repeat visitors to Sabah. Concerning their perception on destination loyalty, the study revealed that respondents were loyal to Sabah, intent to revisit and recommended Sabah as a holiday destination.

Abstract: Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) was introduced to measure the benefit or cost from physical development to the public and community. In Malaysia, EIA was initiated in 1988 as a mandatory legislative requirement to protect and enhance the quality of the environment through licensing, setting of standards, coordination of research and dissemination of information to the public. Public involvement in assessment period is vital, and this conceptual paper identifies that there are three levels of participation in EIA. However, public participation in EIA in Malaysia, in general, is only instrumental due to weaknesses in regulation, lack of awareness and expertise among the public. This further raises the question of effective EIA implementation when public representation is characterized by pseudo participation and select involvement rather than broad participation of all community members, which is an important prerequisite for effective public participation.

Abstract: human erythropoietin (huepo) is a glycoprotein with important physiological functions, such as erythropoiesis, angiogenesis, and wound healing. a therapeutic protein, huepo is commonly used to treat patients suffering from renal and non-renal anemia. recombinant human erythropoietin (rhuepo) and endogenous huepo are similar with respect to their biological and chemical properties. in this study, we describe the construction of synthetic huepo gene to produce rhuepo. the synthetic huepo gene was constructed by overlapping oligonucleotides assembly and amplified by polymerase chain reaction (pcr). twenty oligonucleotide sets, covering the huepo gene sequence and two newly introduced restriction enzyme sites, were pulled together and amplified using pfu dna polymerase to produce the expected dna products with sizes of ~500bp and ~600bp. the pcr products were ligated into pgem-t plasmid vector to facilitate dna sequencing process of the constructed huepo gene and downstream cloning manipulation. dna sequence analysis showed correctly assembled oligonucleotide sets, representing the huepo gene sequence albeit with minor base mutations. hence, oligonucleotides assembly and pcr amplification provide a convenient and speedy method for the synthesis of huepo gene without depending on mrna isolation and reverse transcription or the need to have a genomic library.

Abstract: Many factors may contribute to students not making the grades of a course. More so daunting if the course(s) of concern are prerequisites to other higher-level courses. The compulsory core Differential Equations EBB1113 course is that hurdle for some first semester engineering undergraduates at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS. These students do not fulfill the minimum passing grade and are required to repeat the entire course. Redoing it means having to attend lectures and tutorials all over again. What could be the best approach to tackle the situation so that these students do not repeat the same mistakes and fail again? The objective of this study is to discuss several steps taken up by the instructor with full support for change from the management that could provide some insights as to the efforts made to manage the challenges faced. Electrocatalytic Reduction of Oxygen at Perovskite (BSCF)-MWCNT Composite Electrodes  [PDF]

Abstract:

A composite paste electrode based on Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-δ (BSCF)—initially synthesized by solgel method—and multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) as a cathode in fuel cells is developed. The composite pastes are prepared by the direct mixing of BSCF:MWCNT at 90:10, 80:20 and 70:30 (% w/W). These electrodes are then characterized by the x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The XRD and SEM confirm the inclusion and the uniform dispersal of the MWCNT within BSCF, respectively. The nitrogen adsorption isotherm study shows that the porosity of the composite paste electrode has been improved by two-fold from the BSCF electrode. The EIS and CV demonstrate that the higher ratios of MWCNT in the composites are critical in improving the electronic conductivity as well as the kinetics. It is also noticeable that the electrode has increased the catalysis of oxygen in 0.1 M KOH (pH 12.0). Cyclic voltammetric studies on the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) suggest that the incorporation of MWCNT is vital in improving the electrode (cathode) properties of a fuel cell.

The Impact of Asian Financial Crisis to Earnings Management and Operating Performance in Malaysia

Abstract: This study is motivated by the emergence of different trend between Cash from Operations (CFO) and net income reported by companies. The objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between the operating performances of top 100 market firms listed on the Main Board of the Bursa Malaysia and the behaviour of net income after Asian financial crisis. Initially the sample firms are divided into 10 portfolios based on relative Cash from Operations (CFO) rankings to test if there are systematic differences in CFO across portfolios. A correlation test and a sign-change ratio test are used to study if operating performances and net income are interrelated. The empirical evidence supports the predictions. It suggests that firms from various industries manage earnings when operating performance is poor. The firms tend to choose income-increasing strategies, specifically when the operating performance is extremely poor. In fact, some firms tend to take a big bath whereas some of the exceptionally well performing firms tend to select income-decreasing strategies.
Distance Learners’ Needs on Interactivity in SMS-based Learning System

Abstract: The literature points to the rise of mobile learning (m-learning) adoption in some higher education institutions in Malaysia. However, the designs of m-learning system in each institution are diverse and may not be carefully designed up to learners’ expectation. Needs on interactivity is one aspect to be considered. This study examined the extent to which interactivity is viewed as a key element in designing an SMS-based m-learning system from the perspectives of distance learners. A purposive sample of 61 responses from distance learners from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) was analyzed. The results attested that in general, interactivity was viewed as important in their learning process. Specifically, interaction between students and lecturer was mostly preferred by the students, not only for learning communication, but also as a support to the SMS (Short Message Service)-based learning system. Findings in this study are of interest to distance educators and course designers interested in exploring the interactive elements of SMS-based learning applications.
SIRS Epidemics on Complex Networks: Concurrence of Exact Markov Chain and Approximated Models

Abstract: We study the SIRS (Susceptible-Infected-Recovered-Susceptible) spreading processes over complex networks, by considering its exact $3^n$-state Markov chain model. The Markov chain model exhibits an interesting connection with its $2n$-state nonlinear "mean-field" approximation and the latter's corresponding linear approximation. We show that under the specific threshold where the disease-free state is a globally stable fixed point of both the linear and nonlinear models, the exact underlying Markov chain has an $O(\log n)$ mixing time, which means the epidemic dies out quickly. In fact, the epidemic eradication condition coincides for all the three models. Furthermore, when the threshold condition is violated, which indicates that the linear model is not stable, we show that there exists a unique second fixed point for the nonlinear model, which corresponds to the endemic state. We also investigate the effect of adding immunization to the SIRS epidemics by introducing two different models, depending on the efficacy of the vaccine. Our results indicate that immunization improves the threshold of epidemic eradication. Furthermore, the common threshold for fast-mixing of the Markov chain and global stability of the disease-free fixed point improves by the same factor for the vaccination-dominant model.
