In silico analysis of Eucalyptus thioredoxins
Barbosa, Aulus Estevo;Marinho, Paulo;
Genetics and Molecular Biology , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-47572005000400008
Abstract: the eucalyptus genome sequencing project (forests), an initiative from the brazilian onsa consortium (organization for nucleotide sequencing and analysis), has achieved the sequencing of 123.889 est clones from 18 different cdna libraries. we have investigated the forests data set to identify est clusters potentially encoding thioredoxins (trx). two types of thioredoxin families described in plants, chloroplastic (trxm/f/x/y) and cytosolic (trxh), have been found in the transcriptome. putative typical trxs have been identified in fifteen clusters, four m-type, seven h-type, two f-type, one cluster for each x/y-types and one putative homologue of the tdx gene from arabidopsis thaliana. one cluster presents an atypical active site wcmps, different from the conserved wcgpc present in the other 15 clusters, and corresponds to a subgroup of cytosolic thioredoxins. except in specific libraries from callus, roots, seedlings and wood tissues, thioredoxin deduced ests are found in all remaining libraries. according to the calculated frequencies of ests, chloroplastic thioredoxins are preferentially present in green tissues such as leaves whilst cytoplasmic thioredoxins are more general but demonstrate elevated frequencies in seedlings and flower tissues. trx frequency patterns in the eucalyptus transcriptome seem to indicate a good coherence with data from arabidopsis thaliana gene expression.

Abstract: objective: to evaluate the cognitive performance of the elderly with psychosis, depression and dementia in a mental health outpatient unit. methods: the mini-mental state examination (mmse) and the cambridge cognitive examination (camcog) were applied to 86 patients above 60 years of age referred for evaluation due to memory complaints. patients were diagnosed according to dsm iv criteria. socio-demographic data were expressed as means (standard deviation); mmse and camcog score of patients with psychosis, dementia and mood disorders were compared using student's t test and anova. results: of the total sample (age: 70.87 (sd=6.61); male=32; female=54; illiterate=41, educated=45; 17 (19.7%) had dementia, 11 (12.8%) psychosis and 58 (67.4%) mood disorders. the mmse of the total sample was 21.07 (sd=6.61) and the camcog = 61.50 (sd=19.78). mmse/camcog of each diagnosis: dementia: 16.76 (sd=6.25)/48(sd=20.49); psychosis: 20.9 (sd=5.87)/60.09 (sd=13.54); mood disorders: 22.36 (sd=5.49)/66.03 (sd=18.88). the mmse and camcog scores of patients with dementia were significantly lower than those of patients with mood disorders (anova p < 0.01). the score of patients with psychosis was not different from scores of those with dementia and mood disorders (p >0.05). conclusion: a brief cognitive evaluation permits a differentiation between dementia and depression but not between psychosis and depression in elderly patients of a psychiatric outpatient unit, who had complained of memory impairment. these data may be useful to develop an easy and low cost protocol to attend the population of public health services.
Shedding Some Light over the Floral Metabolism by Arum Lily (Zantedeschia aethiopica) Spathe De Novo Transcriptome Assembly
Elizabete de Souza Candido, Gabriel da Rocha Fernandes, Sérgio Amorim de Alencar, Marlon Henrique e Silva Cardoso, Stella Maris de Freitas Lima, Vívian de Jesus Miranda, William Farias Porto, Diego Oliveira Nolasco, Nelson Gomes de Oliveira-Júnior, Aulus Estevo Anjos de Deus Barbosa, Robert Edward Pogue, Taia Maria Berto Rezende, Simoni Campos Dias, Octávio Luiz Franco
PLOS ONE , 2014, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0090487
Abstract: Zantedeschia aethiopica is an evergreen perennial plant cultivated worldwide and commonly used for ornamental and medicinal purposes including the treatment of bacterial infections. However, the current understanding of molecular and physiological mechanisms in this plant is limited, in comparison to other non-model plants. In order to improve understanding of the biology of this botanical species, RNA-Seq technology was used for transcriptome assembly and characterization. Following Z. aethiopica spathe tissue RNA extraction, high-throughput RNA sequencing was performed with the aim of obtaining both abundant and rare transcript data. Functional profiling based on KEGG Orthology (KO) analysis highlighted contigs that were involved predominantly in genetic information (37%) and metabolism (34%) processes. Predicted proteins involved in the plant circadian system, hormone signal transduction, secondary metabolism and basal immunity are described here. In silico screening of the transcriptome data set for antimicrobial peptide (AMP) –encoding sequences was also carried out and three lipid transfer proteins (LTP) were identified as potential AMPs involved in plant defense. Spathe predicted protein maps were drawn, and suggested that major plant efforts are expended in guaranteeing the maintenance of cell homeostasis, characterized by high investment in carbohydrate, amino acid and energy metabolism as well as in genetic information.
Fernandes, Estevo Rafael;
Horizontes Antropológicos , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-71832010000200019
Abstract: this work reflects about the notions of conception, substance and personhood among the the shavante indians (and between the gê indians, in general) and its perception of the other. what i try to demonstrate is that such notions, although it seems to, are not static, but extremely dynamic - being that such dynamism reflects an ideology of inclusive perception of this "other", beyond bodiness, but also in its mythology, history and in the contact with the whites.
Low-cost microprocessed instrument for evaluating soil temperature profile
CRUVINEL, PAULO ESTEVO;
Pesquisa Agropecuária Brasileira , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-204X2000001100020
Abstract: this paper describes a low-cost microprocessed instrument for in situ evaluating soil temperature profile ranging from -20.0°c to 99.9°c, and recording soil temperature data at eight depths from 2 to 128 cm. of great importance in agriculture, soil temperature affects plant growth directly, and nutrient uptake as well as indirectly in soil water and gas flow, soil structure and nutrient availability. the developed instrument has potential applications in the soil science, when temperature monitoring is required. results show that the instrument with its individual sensors guarantees ±0.25°c accuracy and 0.1°c resolution, making possible localized management changes within decision support systems. the instrument, based on complementary metal oxide semiconductor devices as well as thermocouples, operates in either automatic or non-automatic mode.
Fiat voluntas tua! Vício e pecado na ética de Abelardo
Estevo, José Carlos;
Trans/Form/A??o , 1989, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-31731989000100007

Martins, Estevo de Rezende;
Revista Brasileira de Política Internacional , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-73292001000200001
Abstract: the international relations began to reflect more intensively since the 1990s the requirement of moralization of the public sphere. the theme of ethics - often present on the internal political agendas - gets into the action programs of multilateral organizations and becomes strongly requested from public agents. on the internal and external field as well the contemporary ethical agenda takes the human rights as its substantial reference, as the leading values for a valuable private and public behavior, including the international organizations. for such a historical trend some examples may be mentioned: the internal and external brazilian policy on human rights, the organizing tendency of the regional blocks, as the european union, and the "social clause" considered as indispensable to the economic, commercial and financial relations.
O alargamento da Uni?o Européia e a América Latina
Martins, Estevo de Rezende;
Revista Brasileira de Política Internacional , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-73292004000200001
Abstract: the european union's expansion in 2004 owing to the unprecedented adhesion of ten countries simultaneously signaled a movement toward endogenous concentration based on intra-european means and efforts. this expansion entails further difficulties for eu's external relations, including those with latin america. the cultural legacy partially shared by europe and countries such as the latin american countries is insufficient to change current economic and trade relations. a further obstacle is the political and conceptual inconsistency of a "latin america" that is neither an interlocutor nor a natural partner. the eu's political initiatives and their possible outcome do not go beyond affable rhetoric and good intentions or are restricted to development aid. owing to their competing interests in bilateral or multilateral relations, the european union and its member countries prefer to deal with similar blocs, such as mercosur or the andean community, which have a more clearly defined profile.
The categorical recourse to the notion of structure, in its many relations, can be methodologically useful in elaborating a historical explanation, but does allow us to deduce that history itself (as the sum of all human acts actually practiced) would solidify itself in a single (or more than one) structure, even if only a discursive on.
