Discourse and Communication for Sustainable Education , 2011, DOI: 10.2478/v10230-011-0001-7
Abstract: This study relates the experience of educational action research with pre-service teachers aimed at exploring their views on ecological identity, which is considered the basis for a person's life activity, and its orientation towards inclusion in or exclusion from the global community of life. Through gradual opening of communicative space and participation in critical discourse, research participants became involved in the cycles of reflection on their experiences of interaction with the social and natural world to reveal the features of individual and collective ecological identity that they consider most characteristic for themselves and their community. The present study describes how, through exploration of ecological identity which was found to have four dimensions (cognitive, affective, axiological and conative) as well as a clearly perceived orientation towards apprehended belonging to the community of life and its support system, the participants of educational action research engaged in the process of generating ecological wisdom of insight for sustainability (person's inclusion in the living world based on inclusive interrelations with the global community of life and its support system). We argue that it is a wisdom that pre-service teachers need so as to be able to help their pupils become responsible members of the community of life and actors of change for a sustainable future.
NMR Spectroscopy, Hammett Correlations and Biological Activity of Some Schiff Bases Derived from Piperonal
Echevarria, Aurea;Nascimento, Maria da Gra?a;Ger?nimo, Vanilde;Miller, Joseph;Giesbrecht, Astréa;
Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-50531999000100010
Abstract: a series of eleven schiff bases have been synthesized. they were obtained by condensation of piperonal (3,4-methylenedioxybenzaldehyde) with the corresponding aromatic primary amines. their 1h and 13c-nmr spectra have been obtained and the hammett correlations including chemical shifts and the subsitutent constants (sp, sr e si) were studied. linear and bilinear significant correlations were observed for iminic carbon (c-a) and c-1?, showing a more significant ressonance effect on chemical shifts. the chemical shifts for c-4? were highly affected by substituent effects, especially for halogens in the expected direction. their biological activity against microorganisms has also been measured and significant activity was showed against epidermophyton floccosum. the biological activity did not give a reasonable relationship with electronic effects.

Abstract: titdrop ii, a practice low-cost titrator based on drop counting is proposed. a microcomputer counts drops in an opto-switch and it receives ph values from a commercial phmeter with rs-232 serial port. the volume of drops must kept constant and the amount of base in each drop is obtained by standardization in the titrator. a linear behavior between height of reservoir of titrant and drop frequency was observed, but there is no influence of low height on drop volume. acetic acidity in samples of vinager was compared with volumetric titration, and deviation between -2.6 to 3.9% was observed.

Abstract: that is a descriptive qualitative research that aimed to analyze the implications of the psychiatric disorders in the mother-child relationship, according to the maternal perception. data were collected though semi-structured interview with ten women, selected by the diagnosis of mental disorders in the postpartum period. the collected data were discussed through the content analysis technique. the results pointed difficulties of the mothers to feel themselves sick, due to cultural and social factors that act in the presence of biological factors in the definition of the diagnosis and treatment of the disorders; determining impairment in the prognosis and, causing damages in the mother-child relationship. one concluded that, although the incidence and gravity of psychiatric disorders in the gestational cycle, the professionals and health services still need to be provoked for the implementation of preventive actions to minimize the psychic suffering of the women affected.

Química Nova , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-40422009000500010
Abstract: the adsorption of ethidium bromide on xad-7 resin was studied. the freundlich model was the most representative isotherm model to describe the sorption behavior. a solid-liquid equilibrium model was proposed to explain the resin mass influence on the sorption. the equilibrium constant value estimated was 2.31. the results showed an ethidium bromide ion-pair physical adsorption, with adsorption enthalpy equals to -19.33 kj/mol. a pk2 value equals to 4.69 ± 0.01 was estimated by two distinct methods. the results will be applied to the ethidium bromide preconcentration aiming its decomposition.
TitGer: uma planilha eletr?nica para simula??o de titula??o de mistura de compostos polipróticos
Oliveira, André Fernando;Silva, Astréa F. de Souza;Tenan, Mário A.;Olivo, Sérgio Lineu;
Química Nova , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-40422007000100036
Abstract: the aim of this paper is to present a simple way of treating the general equation for acid-base titrations based on the concept of degree of dissociation, and to propose a new spreadsheet approach for simulating the titration of mixtures of polyprotic compounds. the general expression, without any approximation, is calculated a simple iteration method, making number manipulation easy and painless. the user-friendly spreadsheet was developed by using ms-excel and visual-basic-for-excel. several graphs are drawn for helping visualizing the titration behavior. a monte carlo function for error simulation was also implemented. two examples for titration of alkalinity and mcilvaine buffer are presented.

Abstract: the molar single ion activity coefficient (yf) of fluoride ions was determined at 25 °c and ionic strengths between 0.100 and 3.00 mol l-1 naclo4 using an ion-selective electrode. the activity coefficient dependency on ionic strength was determined to be φf = log yf = 0.2315i - 0.041i2. the function φf(i), combined with functions obtained in previous work for copper (φcu) and hydrogen (φh), allowed us to make the estimation of the stoichiometric and thermodynamic protonation constants of some halides and pseudo-halides as well as the formation constants of some pseudo-halides and fluoride 1:1 bivalent cation complexes. the calculation procedure proposed in this paper is consistent with critically-selected experimental data. it was demonstrated that it is possible to use φf(i) for predicting the thermodynamic equilibrium parameters independently of pearson's hardness of acids and bases.
Minimal Repair Redundancy for Coherent Systemin its Signatures Representation  [PDF]

American Journal of Operations Research (AJOR) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/ajor.2011.11002
Abstract: In this paper we discuss how to maintain the signature representation of a coherent system through a minimal repair redundancy. In a martingale framework we use compensator transforms to identify how the components minimal repairs affect the order statistics in the signature representation.
