Schwannoma of the Brachial Plexus Presented as a Neck Mass: A Case Report and Review of the Literature  [PDF]

Abstract: Schwannomas of the head and neck as well as brachial plexus primary tumors are both uncommon entities, and combination of these conditions is quite rare. Schwannomas of the brachial plexus are usually asymptomatic and they present as slowly enlarging masses in the supra- or infraclavicular regions. Although imaging plays a routine role in the detection of these neoplasms, identification of the nerve origin is not often feasible until the time of surgery. Definitive diagnosis is based on histopathological features with presence of spindle-shaped Schwann cells. We report a case of a middle aged woman with left lateral mid-neck mass, which based on the clinical findings, was provisionally diagnosed as a painless lymphadenopathy. Ensuing excisional biopsy revealed the brachial plexus as the origin of a tumor, which subsequently was confirmed to be a schwannoma with microscopic evaluation. The course of disease was complicated with upper brachial plexus injury which was recovered by sural nerve graft.
Porous high-density polyethylene in facial reconstruction and revision rhinoplasty: a prospective cohort study

Abstract: This study was a prospective cohort study. Surgical techniques included using Medpor? in reconstruction of lamina papiracea (LP) (15 patients), frontal bone (15 patients), orbital rim (18 patients) and open rhinoplasty (8 patients). All interventions on LP were performed by endoscopic procedures. All frontal operations were carried out by bicoronal incision. In orbital defects, we used subciliary incision.From all 56 patients, 1 case had primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) of maxillary sinus. In that case, reconstruction of inferior orbital rim was not successful and extrusion was occurred after radiotherapy. In rhinoplasty and other experiences no extrusion or infection were detected within the next 1 to 3?years of follow up. There were not any palpable and visible irregularities under the skin in our experiences.In this study the patients did not experience any complications during the follow up periods and the satisfaction was remarkable. Gathering these data gives rise to future review studies which can provide more organized evidences for replacing classic reconstructive methods by the presented material.Loss of tissue caused by trauma, cancer or surgery usually needs some materials for reconstruction. An epidemiologic study of factors associated with nasal septum deviation by computed tomography scan: a cross sectional study

Abstract: Background Sinusitis is an inflammation of the paranasal sinuses that can be caused by anatomic variations of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. In this study we aimed to find the relationship between sinusitis and septal deviation (SeD) and concha bullosa. Methods Two trained resident of ENT evaluated sinus CT scans of 463 cases presenting with nasal obstruction or chronic sinusitis symptoms from April 2011 to December 2011. CT scans were checked for the presence of conchae bullosa and the degree of septal deviation. The severity of sinusitis was evaluated according to the Lund Mackay criteria. The frequency of patients with different degrees of SeD and different grades of chronic sinusitis were studied. Results Of 463 cases, 47% had septal deviation. Concha bullosa was seen in 16.8% of the patients in the left side and 27.6% of them in the right side. There was no significant relationship between the presence of concha bullosa and the severity of sinusitis. Also the P value of analytical tests between the severity of sinusitis, osteomeatal involvement and the degree of septal deviation was not significant. Analysis of the relationship between the presence of SeD (either to right or left) and the severity of sinusitis in different sinuses revealed no significant P value. Conclusions By this study, the relationship between concha bullosa in osteomeatal complex and the severity of sinusitis was not cleared. No relationship was found between the severity of sinusitis, osteomeatal involvement and the degree of septal deviation. Also SeD (either to right or left) was not found to be associated with the severity of sinusitis in different sinuses.
Modified Technique for Internal Ureteroileal Stenting in Orthotopic Neobladders  [PDF]

Abstract: We introduce a modified surgical technique for internal ureteroileal stenting to improve cosmesis in patients undergoing ileal neobladder. Internal ureteric stents are secured to the tip of the urethral catheter with nonabsorbable suture facilitating removal of the stents postoperatively 2-3 weeks along with the urethral catheter. This surgical modification was applied to 21 patients of whom no significant surgical or infectious complication due to single urethral catheter was observed. Internal ureteral stenting is simple, safe and inexpensive alternative to conventional methods to support ureteroileal anastomosis in patients undergoing orthotopic bladder substitution.

This paper investigates the effect of the Van-Ercis, Turkey, (Mw: 7.2)earthquake occurring on 23rd of October, 2011 on the transportation networks in the region. The basic incentivefor this research is to conceptualise the reliability and performance of the networks after the earthquake through the operational and topological analysis of the system. The demand and composition of the traffic along with the behaviour of the pedestrians were taken into account to evaluate the performance of the networks. In addition, the general structure of the cities and towns, as far as planning is concerned, is also paid attention and regarded as one of the main elements for the appraisal. The outcomes obtained are thought very important to be guidance for the expected Istanbul earthquake in the near future.

Detection of helicobacter pylori in benign laryngeal lesions by polymerase chain reaction: a cross sectional study

Abstract: The samples were taken from 55 patients with benign laryngeal lesions and frozen in ?20°C. One milliliter (ml) of lysis buffer was added to 100 mg (mg) of each sample and the tube was placed in 56°C overnight. Then DNA extraction was carried out.To find HP DNA, in-house PCR was performed that revealed 5 positive results among 55 patients with benign laryngeal lesions. Of them, 3 were polyp, 1 was nodule and 1 was papilloma.Although the number of positive results was not a lot in this study, it was in contrast with previous studies which could not find any HP tracks in benign laryngeal lesions by other methods. More studies about the prevalence of HP in benign laryngeal lesions improve judging about the effect of this infection on benign laryngeal lesions.
Influence of Ferric and Ferrous Iron on Chemical and Bacterial Leaching of Copper Flotation Concentrates  [PDF]

Abstract: The effects of ferrous and ferric iron as well as redox potential on copper and iron extraction from the copper flotation concentrate of Sarcheshmeh, Kerman, Iran, were evaluated using shake flask leaching examinations. Experiments were carried out in the presence and absence of a mixed culture of moderately thermophile microorganisms at 50?C. Chemical leaching experiments were performed in the absence and presence of 0.15 M iron (ferric added medium, ferrous added medium and a mixture medium regulated at 420 mV, Pt. vs. Ag/AgCl). In addition, bioleaching experiments were carried out in the presence and absence of 0.1 M iron (ferric and ferrous added mediua) at pulp density 10% (w/v), inoculated bacteria 20% (v/v), initial pH 1.6, nutrient medium Norris and yeast extract addition 0.02% (w/w). Abiotic leaching tests showed that the addition of iron at low solution redox potentials significantly increased the rate and extent of copper dissolution but when ferric iron was added, despite a higher initial rate of copper dissolution, leaching process stopped. Addition of both ferrous and ferric iron to the bioleaching medium levelled off the copper extraction and had an inhibitory effect which decreased the final redox potential. The monitoring of ferrous iron, ferric iron and copper extraction in leach solutions gave helpful results to understand the behaviour of iron cations during chemical and bacterial leaching processes.

Abstract: We analyze the temperature dependence of the Raman intensity using the experimental data according to a power-law formula close to the order-disorder transition (Tc = 549 K) in NaNO 3. From this analysis, we extract the value of β = 0.26 as the critical exponent for the order parameter, which indicates a tricritical phase transition in this crystalline system. Using the temperature dependence of the order parameter, the Raman bandwidth is calculated at various temperatures in NaNO3. Our calculated bandwidths describe adequately the observed behaviour of the order-disorder transition in this crystal.

Abstract: Embedded systems used in real-time applications require low power, less area and high computation speed. For digital signal processing, image processing and communication applications, data are often received at a continuously high rate. The type of necessary arithmetic functions and matrix operations may vary greatly among different applications. The RTL-based design and verification of one or more of these functions could be time-consuming. Some High Level Synthesis tools reduce this design and verification time but may not be optimal or suitable for low power applications. The design tool proposed in this paper can improve the design time and reduce the verification process. The design tool offers a fast design and verification platform for important matrix operations. These operations range from simple addition to more complex matrix operations such as LU and QR factorizations. The proposed platform can improve design time by reducing verification cycle. This tool generates Verilog code and its testbench that can be realized in FPGA and VLSI systems. The designed system uses MATLAB-based verification and reporting.
