The effect of H. pylori eradication on meal-associated changes in plasma ghrelin and leptin
Fritz Francois, Jatin Roper, Neal Joseph, Zhiheng Pei, Aditi Chhada, Joshua R Shak, Asalia de Perez, Guillermo I Perez-Perez, Martin J Blaser
BMC Gastroenterology , 2011, DOI: 10.1186/1471-230x-11-37
Abstract: Veterans referred for upper GI endoscopy were evaluated at baseline and ≥8 weeks after endoscopy, and H. pylori status and body weight were ascertained. During the first visit in all subjects, and during subsequent visits in the initially H. pylori-positive subjects and controls, blood was collected after an overnight fast and 1 h after a standard high protein meal, and levels of eight hormones determined.Of 92 enrolled subjects, 38 were H. pylori-negative, 44 H. pylori-positive, and 10 were indeterminate. Among 23 H. pylori-positive subjects who completed evaluation after treatment, 21 were eradicated, and 2 failed eradication. After a median of seven months following eradication, six hormones related to energy homeostasis showed no significant differences, but post-prandial acylated ghrelin levels were nearly six-fold higher than pre-eradication (p = 0.005), and median integrated leptin levels also increased (20%) significantly (p < 0.001). BMI significantly increased (5 ± 2%; p = 0.008) over 18 months in the initially H. pylori-positive individuals, but was not significantly changed in those who were H. pylori-negative or indeterminant at baseline.Circulating meal-associated leptin and ghrelin levels and BMI changed significantly after H. pylori eradication, providing direct evidence that H. pylori colonization is involved in ghrelin and leptin regulation, with consequent effects on body morphometry.The healthful regulation of energy homeostasis in humans, depends on centrally-acting hormones such as ghrelin and leptin [1,2]. Serum ghrelin concentrations increase during fasting, and decrease after eating [3]; ghrelin decreases energy expenditure and promotes weight gain [4]. In contrast, leptin produced primarily by adipocytes, reduces appetite and increases energy utilization [5]. The gastric epithelium expresses both ghrelin and leptin (and their receptors) [6,7]; inflammation can modify their production [8,9].Helicobacter pylori, which colonizes the human stom
On the Ricci tensor of real hypersurfaces of quaternionic projective space

International Journal of Mathematics and Mathematical Sciences , 1996, DOI: 10.1155/s0161171296000270
Abstract: We study some conditions on the Ricci tensor of real hypersurfaces of quaternionic projective space obtaining among other results an improvement of the main theorem in [9].

Search for Very High Energy Gamma Rays from an X-ray Selected Blazar Sample
I. de la Calle Perez
Physics , 2003,
Abstract: In recent years, blazar surveys at radio and X-ray energies have greatly increased our understanding of this type of active galaxy. The combination of multi-wavelength data has shown that blazars follow a well defined sequence in terms of their broad band spectral properties. Together with increasingly detailed emission models, this information has provided not only tools with which to identify potential sources of TeV emission but also predictions of their gamma-ray flux. A list of such candidates has been used in this work to investigate the best targets for TeV observations. Observations reported here have resulted in upper limits which do not conflict with the latest model predictions.
Gest?o do trabalho docente: o "dramático" uso de si
Moura, Eliana Perez Gon?alves de;

Abstract: this study discusses the collective processes adopted by teachers to produce themselves as subjects of work and engendered at a dimension of work experience that escapes the logic of work organization and school management practices. in-service training models are discussed in that they are conceived as strategies of control and standardization of teaching practices. teaching should be managed as an action inherent to experience, which depends on choices made from a series of hierarchically ranked acts, objective and values, as well as on the dramatic tension between the use of self "for oneself" and "for others".
Imagens em 2D e 3D geradas pela TC Cone-Beam e radiografias convencionais: qual a mais confiável?

Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S2176-94512010000500007
Abstract: objective: to compare the reliability of two different methods used for viewing and identifying cephalometric landmarks, i.e., (a) using conventional cephalometric radiographs, and (b) using 2d and 3d images generated by cone-beam computed tomography. methods: the material consisted of lateral view 2d and 3d images obtained by cone-beam computed tomography printed on photo paper, and lateral cephalometric radiographs, taken in the same radiology clinic and on the same day, of two patients selected from the archives of the specialization program in orthodontics, at the school of dentistry, fluminense federal university (uff). ten students from the specialization program in orthodontics at uff identified landmarks on transparent acetate paper and measurements were made of the following cephalometric variables: anb, fmia, impa, fma, interincisal angle, 1-na (mm) and ˉ1 -nb (mm). arithmetic means were then calculated, standard deviations and coefficients of variance of each variable for both patients. results and conclusions: the values of the measurements taken from 3d images showed less dispersion, suggesting greater reliability when identifying some cephalometric landmarks. however, since the printed 3d images used in this study did not allow us to view intracranial landmarks, the development of specific software is required before this type of examination can be used in routine orthodontic practice.
Extra??o e comercializa??o de folhagens ornamentais da Mata Atlantica: o caso da verdes (Rumohra adiantiformis) no RS
Ribas, Rafael Perez;Miguel, Lovois de Andrade;
Revista de Economia e Sociologia Rural , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-20032004000400003
Abstract: this work shows the results of research on the leather fern (rumohra adiantiformis (g. forst.) ching) trade that it's extracted at the atlantic slope region of rio grande do sul. besides being considered one of the greatest fern producing regions of brazil, a significant number of local family farmers have in the extraction of this species their main income source. the results of this study allowed us to verify the existence of a very differentiated compensation in different agents involved, emphasizing the predominance of precarious and informal commercial relations, and the inexistence of representation and organization of the involved players. this situation is a consequence of the illegal and clandestine character of this activity, in view of the effective environmental legislation in rio grande do sul state.
El inmunoensayo enzimático (ELISA) en el diagnóstico serológico de Plasmodium vivax
Perez, Hilda A.;De La Rosa, Mercedes;
Revista do Instituto de Medicina Tropical de S?o Paulo , 1990, DOI: 10.1590/S0036-46651990000300008
Abstract: elisa was evaluated for the serodiagnosis of plasmodium vivax using homologous antigen. this was a crude fraction obtained after detergent (np-40) lysis of human parasitized red blood cells. antibodies of the classes igm, igg, iga were determined in a pool of eleven sera from patients with p. vivax malaria. the protein a was introduced as secondary probe to screen p. vivax antibodies in 30 sera of patients harbouring a first episode of p. vivax malaria. there was a correlation of 93% with the parasitological diagnosis and the test resulted specific and reproducible.
