Hybrid Algorithmic Structure for Linear Programming Problems

Abstract: Linear Programming Problems are mathematical models used to represent real life situations in the form of linear objective function and constraints various methods are available to solve linear programming problems. When formulating an LP model, systems analysts and researchers often include all possible constraints although some of them may not be binding at the optimal solution. The presence of redundant constraints does not alter the optimum solution(s), but may consume extra computational effort. Redundant constraints identification methods are applied for reducing computational effort in LP problems. But accuracy of the LP problems goes down due to this reduction of loops and constraints. To achieve optimality in accuracy and also in computational effort, we propose an algorithm, called, hybrid algorithm, it trains the constraint and parameter before applying the formal methodology.
CAG and GGN Repeat Length Polymorphisms of Androgen Receptor Gene in Women with Breast Cancer: A Case-Control Study from South India  [PDF]

Abstract: Aim: The Androgen Receptor (AR) is a ligand-dependent transcriptional activator and the AR gene contains a highly polymorphic trinucleotide repeat CAG and GGN in the first exon. Given the lack of information AR-CAG and GGN repeat polymorphism and its potential correlation with breast cancer in South Indian women, we conducted a case-control study to observe the effects of CAG & GGN repeat length polymorphism and risk of breast cancer. Methods: Polymorphisms for AR-CAG and GGN repeat length was detected by Gene Scan analysis in the genomic DNA from cases with breast cancer and controls. Results: Association between AR genotype was calculated by categorising alleles as short (S) and long (L) and taking median value as the cut-off. LL genotype of CAG repeat was found to be associated with breast cancer (OR, 4.58; 95% CI, 10.61-1.98; p—0.0004). GGN repeat having ≥21 was found in most of the cases and none of the cases showed 20 repeats thus indicate that alleles having homozygous repeat 20 may be protective towards breast cancer. Also, SS genotype was observed in 56.84% of cases and in 73.03% of controls (OR, 0.48; 95% CI, 0.26-0.89; p value, 0.02). Conclusion: Our results indicate that longer CAG and GGN repeat may be associated with breast cancer whereas, the shorter GGN repeat length genotype of AR are protective.
Efficacy of intraoperative vancomycin in irrigating solutions on aqueous contamination during phacoemulsification

Abstract: Purpose: To study the efficacy of adding vancomycin in irrigating solutions, in comparison to topical antibiotic given preoperatively for a day, during phacoemulsification, in reducing the anterior chamber (AC) contamination. Settings and Design: This was a prospective, interventional, hospital-based study. Materials and Methods: This was a study involving 400 eyes of 400 paitens, undergoing routine phacoemulsification between January 2004 and June 2006. The patients were non-randomly assigned to two groups: Group 1 included 180 patients, who received topical ciprofloxacin eye-drops (four-hourly) for a day preoperatively and Group 2 included 220 patients, who underwent phacoemulsification with vancomycin (20 μg/ml) in the irrigating solution. Anterior chamber aspirate obtained at the end of the surgery was sent for microbial workup. The number of positive cultures in both the groups was determined. Statistical analysis: This was performed using Chi-square test. Results: Aqueous samples showed microbial growth in 38 (21.1%) out of 180 eyes in Group 1 and in 17 (7.7%) out of 220 eyes in Group 2 ( P = 0.001). Coagulase-negative staphylococcus was the most common organism in both the groups. Aqueous samples from four eyes in group 1 showed multiple organisms, while none of the sample from group 2 showed more than one organism. None of the eyes in either group showed fungal contamination. One patient in Group 1 developed endophthalmitis, and the causative organism was Alcaligenes faecalis. All patients were followed up for a minimum of six months (range: 6 to 14 months and mean: 9.3 months). Conclusion: Addition of vancomycin in irrigating solutions is more efficacious in reducing AC contamination in comparison to topical antibiotic administered a day preoperatively.
Lenz microphthalmic syndrome in an Indian patient

Abstract: A case of Lenz microphthalmia syndrome in a seven-month-old male child having features of unilateral anophthalmia, microcephaly, external ear and finger abnormalities, hydrocele and hypospadias is being reported. The unilateral involvement and anophthalmia is rare in Lenz syndrome. The manifestation of hydrocele in association with this syndrome has not been seen in earlier cases. This is the first documented case from India.
A Laboratory Scale Synthesis of Geopolymer from Locally Available Coal Fly Ash from Brick Industry

Abstract: In this work, geopolymers have been synthesized from coal fly ash (CFA) using KOH and Na2SiO3 as activators. Some parameters such as alkali concentration, amount of Na 2 SiO 3 and curing time have been varied in order to improve the quality of geopolymeric product. The geopolymerization process was carried out using 3-8 M KOH solutions, Na 2 SiO 3 to CFA mass ratio of 0.25-2.00 and curing time variation from 6-28 days. The curing temperature was fixed at 40°C in all the cases. During the variation of KOH concentration, the maximum compressive strength of 6.62 MPa was obtained with CFA treated with 7 M KOH solution. Similarly, with the variation of the mass ratio of Na 2 SiO 3 to CFA, the maximum compressive strength of 28.1 MPa was obtained with Na 2 SiO 3 to CFA mass ratio of 1.75. Furthermore, the compressive strength was found to be increased with increasing curing time and 41.9 MPa was achieved with 28 days of curing time.? U(2) invariant squeezing properties of pair coherent states

Abstract: The U(2) invariant approach is delineated for the pair coherent states to explore their squeezing properties. This approach is useful for a complete analysis of the squeezing properties of these two-mode states. We use the maximally compact subgroup U(2) of Sp(4,R) to mix the modes, thus allowing us to search over all possible quadratures for squeezing. The variance matrix for the pair coherent states turns out to be analytically diagonalisable, giving us a handle over its least eigenvalue, through which we are able to pin down the squeezing properties of these states. In order to explicitly demonstrate the role played by U(2) transformations, we connect our results to the previous analysis of squeezing for the pair coherent states.
Quantum Entanglement and Quantum Computational Algorithms

Abstract: The existence of entangled quantum states gives extra power to quantum computers over their classical counterparts. Quantum entanglement shows up qualitatively at the level of two qubits. We show that if no entanglement is envolved then whatever one can do with qubits can also be done with classical optical systems. We demonstrate that the one- and the two-bit Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm does not require entanglement and can be mapped onto a classical optical scheme. It is only for three and more input bits that the DJ algorithm requires the implementation of entangling transformations and in these cases it is impossible to implement this algorithm classically.

Abstract: Binder's Syndrome also known as Maxillo-Nasal Dysplasia is a developmental disorder primarily affecting the anterior part of the maxilla and nasal complex (nose and jaw). It is a rare disorder and the causes are unclear. It is an uncommon condition characterized by a retruded mid-face with an extremely flat nose. Hereditary factors and vitamin D deficiency during embryonic growth have been researched as possible causes. Morphological characteristics of the syndrome are of fundamental importance for the correct diagnosis and treatment planning of these patients. We hereby report to you a rare case of Binder's syndrome with clinical, radiographic features and discussed the treatment options.
Co-Occurence of Florid Cemento-Osseous Dysplasia and Simple Bone Cyst: a Case Report

Abstract: Background: The purpose of this report is to present a rare case of co-occurrence of florid cemento-osseous dysplasia with simple bone cyst in a middle aged Asian woman. Most of the reported cases are isolated cases of simple bone cyst or florid cemento-osseous dysplasia, but co-occurrence of these two entities is extremely rare.Methods: The authors report a 41 year old female patient with co-occurrence of mandibular florid cemento-osseous dysplasia with simple bone cyst. A thorough clinical and radiological examination was carried out.Results: It was diagnosed mandibular cyst with possible co-occurrence of florid cemento-osseous dysplasia. Surgical exploration of the multilocular lesion was applied. Since, the patient was symptomatic at the time of presentation utmost caution was taken during the surgical procedure as florid cemento-osseous dysplasia is associated with hypo-vascularity of the affected bone. Based on histopathological, as well as supporting clinico-radiological findings a confirmative diagnosis of florid cemento-osseous dysplasia co-occurring with simple bone cyst was made. Patient was followed-up for a period of six months and was reported to be asymptomatic.Conclusions: Timely diagnosis and well planned treatment is important to obtain a good prognosis when a rare co-occurrence of two or more bone lesions affects the jaws.
Structure, Composition and Diversity of Horticulture Trees and Agricultural Crops Productivity under Traditional Agri-Horticulture System in Mid Hill Situation of Garhwal Himalaya, India  [PDF]

Abstract: Productivity of agricultural crops under traditional agri-hortculture system alongwith structure, composition and diversity of fruit trees and shrub species in mid hill situation of Garhwal Himalaya, India between 1000 to 2000 m asl during summer and winter seasons on northern and southern aspect were studied. The tree density, composition and diversity in the system varied depending upon aspect, landholding and requirements of the farmers. A total of 12 fruit tree species were recorded in agri-horticulture system; of which 4 trees were common in northern and southern aspect and 6 trees were only noticed in northern aspect while 2 in the southern. The apple tree (Malus domestica) was recorded to be dominant fruit tree species with highest IVI values on both northern and southern aspect with prime preference by the farmers for high additional economic return in agri-horticulture system. Among the shrubs, the 6 shrub species were recorded on the northern aspect whereas there number was 16 on southern aspect. The agricultural crop diversity was higher on the northern aspect in summer and winter season. The average annual productivity of grain under agri-horticulture system recorded 1106 kg·ha–1·year–1 on northern aspect and 1122 kg·ha–1·year–1 on southern with a reduction of 34.56% and 38.29% compared to the sole agriculture crops. The aspect and season also played significantly role in grain, straw and biological productivity of agricultural crops present in agri-horticulture and sole cropping systems. In general there was reduction in yield of agricultural crops under fruit trees but this reduction is supplemented by fruit production which support and sustain the rural community of this hilly region.
