Alcohol Consumption Is Associated with Hypogonadism and Decreased Sexual Function in Ghanaian Diabetics  [PDF]

Abstract: Introduction: Alcohol usage has largely been seen as a risk factor for the development of sexual dysfunction as well as erectile dysfunction. Others have reported that prolonged alcohol usage and abuse is compatible with normal sexual function in the absence of endocrinological problems as well as hepatic dysfunction. About seventy five (75) percent of alcoholics have various sexual difficulties with improvements in sexual functions occurring after treatment of alcoholism and psychosexual therapy. It is evident from the various reports over the years that mild and occasional alcohol usage is not as much implicated in the causation of SD and its other forms as heavy, addictive or dependent alcohol usage. Alcohol usage has also long been linked to hypogonadism, testicular atrophy as well as leydig cell toxicity. Alcohol induced hypogonadism has been reported to resolve after withdrawal of alcohol use. Since both diabetes and alcohol usage have been strongly associated with both hypogonadism and sexual dysfunction, it is logical to expect that diabetics who frequently consume alcohol will have a worsened hypogonadal state and sexual function. This research therefore seeks to provide evidence of an association between alcohol consumption in diabetics and a worsened sexual dysfunction in comparison to diabetics who did not consume alcohol. Methods: Type II diabetic patients attending the Diabetic Clinic at the Maamobi General Hospital between the periods of January 2010 and March 2011 were consecutively recruited for this study. Diabetics with other known endocrinological diseases and physical disabilities were excluded from the study. Sexual function was assessed using the GRISS-M. Early morning fasting samples were used in lipid and testosterone profile assays. Results: Study participants who consumed alcohol recorded higher levels of triglycerides and LDL-Cholesterol. They also recorded significantly lower levels of bioavailable testosterone. Furthermore they also recorded higher scores for impotence, premature ejaculation, non-sensuality and infrequency but lower scores for avoidance and were about six times more likely to be infrequent in their sexual activity in comparison with those who did not consume alcohol. Conclusion: Alcohol consumption among diabetic males is associated with hypogonadism and has an impact on several domains of male sexual function. Abstract: Green’s function technique is used to obtain the solution of Shredinger equation for impurity states in a quantum well (QW) under the magnetic field. Binding energy of impurity states is defined as poles of the wave function. We studied effects of the magnetic field magnitude and impurity position on the binding energy. The calculations were performed for both ground and excited states. The dependences of binding energies versus impurity position and magnetic field are presented for GaAs/Al0.3Ga0.7As QW.

Abstract: Recent interest in culture stems from its power to explain corporate and organizational failures. Such failures are both internal and external: accounting fraud, management misconduct, harassment and bullying in the workplace, racism, sexism, environmental issues, and health and safety concerns. Current theory holds that these failures are to be explained partly by the particular, poor organizational culture and unhealthy climate, poor leadership, and by the misdeeds of a few bad apples. When economic conditions are negative, organizations look to legislation, regulations, and codes, to reform their culture, and manage the risks of organizational failure. Both the compliance strategy, demanding obedience to laws, regulations and codes, and the integrity or values strategy, focusing on ethics training, education, tone at the top, and the hiring of employees with integrity and values, are the mainstay of recent legislation and regulations in North America and the European Union. We criticize the reliance on legislation, regulations and codes, the focus of a compliance solution which we find inadequate, ineffective, and unenforceable. We suggest reliance on a front-end, proactive and preventive program of best, precautionary practices, will better meet the challenge, in prosperity or poverty, of setting corporate culture on the right track.

Abstract: Study objective: To establish the safety and efficacy of small-gel particle hyaluronic acid (SGP-HA; Restylane®, Medicis Aesthetics Inc., Scottsdale, AZ) for lip augmentation. Study design: This was a Phase 3, prospective, open-label, evaluator-blinded, single-center pilot study of SGP-HA use in lip augmentation. The primary efficacy objectives were to investigate the efficacy of SGP-HA in lip augmentation and to assess subject satisfaction with the procedure 12 weeks after treatment. Secondary efficacy objectives were to validate 3D imaging to measure lip augmentation, identify subject satisfaction at all points in time, and identify the duration of lip augmentation and palpability of SGP-HA in the lips. The primary safety objective was to assess the incidence, duration, and severity of all adverse experiences. Results: All 20 subjects and the treating investigator indicated improvement in the appearance of subjects’ lips at weeks 2, 6, and 12. SGP-HA administered for augmentation was well tolerated. Four (20%) subjects treated with SGP-HA experienced 7 treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs). Conclusions: Results of this study show promising efficacy and an absence of safety issues with the use of SGP-HA in lip augmentation.

Spin-wave structures whose current-voltage characteristics are controlled at room temperatures by magnetic field were produced with industrial technological methods using a spintronic europium-monoxide-based thin-film composite as an emitter and monocrystalline semiconductor n-GaAs as a collector. This shows that spin current transport actually exists and that a high-temperature spin transistor was produced with the use of the magnetic semiconductor/nonmagnetic semiconductor contact.

Until recently, the effects of all injectable filling agents were temporary and very rarely associated with permanent problems. In the past, the permanent injectable silicone had been used but had been so problematic that the Justice Department filed injunctions against certain physicians on behalf of the FDA. After 2000 a dangerous pattern grew in the corridors of Washington DC, where politics and money changed the face of America and the field of aesthetics to the detriment of the faces of the consumers. Industry has accomplished the approval of synthetic agents that should have never reached the market. Once injected under skin, the body cannot digest these agents and the immune system walls them off with resultant formation of nodules, which at times require surgical removal.

Propagation of electromagnetic wave (EW) through multilayer structure consisting anisotropic layers with gradient refractive index material is studied theoretically. Analytical solution for linear dependence of refractive index profile is examined. The structure consist the forbidden gaps, which are sensitive to parameters of refractive index profile.

Abstract: Predicting the outcome of treatment among TB patients is a big concern of the Department of Health. Data mining in health care system can be used for decision making. The most widely used for data exploration is decision tree based on divide and conquer technique. The objectives of this article are to create a predictive data mining model for TB patient category to find the relapse treatment and to classify the factors influencing the relapse treatment to provide assistance, guidance, and appropriate warning to TB patients who are at risk. The dataset of TB patient records is verified and applied in CHAID classification tree algorithm using SPSS Statistics 17.0. The classification tree model identified the set of two statistically significant independent variables (DSSM Result, Age) as predictors of patient category.

Abstract: In these lectures, I will attempt a pedagogical and qualitative introduction to the theory of equilibrium and thermalization of quark-gluon plasmas. I assume only that the reader is familiar with quantum field theory at zero temperature and with QCD as the theory of the strong interactions. I focus on the limit of small alpha_s, which in principle should be relevant at extremely high temperature because of asymptotic freedom, and in any case provides a clean theoretical context in which to discuss a variety of phenomena. Topics discussed include the basic equilibrium formalism for finite-temperature quantum field theory, Debye screening, electric deconfinement, magnetic confinement, dimensional reduction, plasma waves, kinetic theory, hydrodynamic properties such as viscosity, the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect, thermalization in (arbitrarily high energy) heavy ion collisions, and QCD plasma instabilities.
