Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27492011000500014
Abstract: the aim of this report is to describe a case of age-related macular degeneration with juxtafoveal subretinal neovascular membrane, initially treated with intravitreal bevacizumab (avastin?) and afterwards with focal photocoagulation laser therapy. the efficacy of the initial and complementary treatment was evaluated through the visual acuity measurement and complementary exams (fluorescein angiography and optical coherence tomography). after three bevacizumab intravitreal injections , it has occurred the eccentric reduction of the neovascular subretinal membrane, changing its classification to extrafoveal, what allowed the subsequent treatment with focal photocoagulation laser therapy.

The aim of this paper is to show some possible contributions of Distance Education in a new perspective of teaching/learning processes of a Foreign Language supported by technology. The resources offered by technology are very important and they make it possible to amplify new learning opportunities for those students who, for many reasons, cannot continue their learning process through the presence mode. The use of technology, more specifically the Internet, allows the access to information which may help the students to build their knowledge and become themselves active in their learning process.

Abstract: objective: the assessment of water quality and phytoplankton community in recreational environments allows to setting management programs aiming at preventing potential harm to human health. the purpose of the present study was to describe phytoplankton seasonal changes in a freshwater system and their relation to water quality. methods: the recreational fishing lake is located in the southern area of the city of s?o paulo, brazil. water samples were collected in three previously selected sites in the lake throughout a year and analyzed regarding floristic composition and physical and chemical parameters. results: the phytoplankton qualitative analysis revealed 91 taxa distributed among eight classes: chlorophyceae, cyanophyceae, euglenophyceae, zygnemaphyceae, bacillariophyceae, xantophyceae, dinophyceae, and chrysophyceae. some physical and chemical parameters seemed to influence phytoplankton community behavior. chlorophyceae development was favored by local conditions. among the species of cyanobacteria identified, microcystis paniformis, cylindrospermopsis raciborskii, and anabaena species were the most important due to their ability to produce toxins, posing a high risk to public health. conclusions: some physical and chemical parameters had an impact on the structure of phytoplankton community. the presence of microcystis paniformis, cylindrospermopsis raciborskii and anabaena species indicates toxic potential and likelihood of public health problems unless there is constant monitoring. further studies are recommended to prevent hazardous effects to the environment and public health.

Quantum Metrology Triangle Experiments: A Status Review
Hansj?rg Scherer,Benedetta Camarota
Physics , 2012, DOI: 10.1088/0957-0233/23/12/124010
Abstract: Quantum Metrology Triangle experiments combine three quantum electrical effects (the Josephson effect, the quantum Hall effect and the single-electron transport effect) used in metrology. These experiments allow important fundamental consistency tests on the validity of commonly assumed relations between fundamental constants of nature and the quantum electrical effects. This paper reviews the history, results and the present status and perspectives of Quantum Metrology Triangle experiments. It also reflects on the possible implications of results for the knowledge on fundamental constants and the quantum electrical effects.
White Dwarf based evaluation of the GALEX absolute calibration
L Camarota,J B Holberg
Physics , 2013, DOI: 10.1093/mnras/stt2422
Abstract: This paper describes a revised photometric calibration of the \emph{Galaxy Evolution Explorer} magnitudes, based on measurements of DA white dwarfs. The photometric magnitudes of white dwarfs measured by \emph{GALEX} are compared to predicted magnitudes based on independent spectroscopic data (108 stars) and alternately to \emph{IUE} UV fluxes of the white dwarfs (218 stars). The results demonstrate a significant non-linear correlation and small offset between archived \emph{GALEX} fluxes and observed and predicted UV fluxes for our sample. The primary source of non-linearity may be due to detector dead time corrections for brighter stars, but it should be noted that there was a predicted non-linearity in the fainter stars as well. Sample expressions are derived which 'correct' observed \emph{GALEX} magnitudes to an absolute magnitude scale that is linear with respect, and directly related, to the \emph{Hubble Space Telescope} photometric scale. These corrections should be valid for stars dimmer than magnitudes 9.3 and 10.5 in the NUV and FUV respectively, and brighter than magnitude 17.5 in both
Designing novel Sn-Bi, Si-C and Ge-C nanostructures, using simple theoretical chemical similarities
Zdetsis Aristides
Nanoscale Research Letters , 2011,
Abstract: A framework of simple, transparent and powerful concepts is presented which is based on isoelectronic (or isovalent) principles, analogies, regularities and similarities. These analogies could be considered as conceptual extensions of the periodical table of the elements, assuming that two atoms or molecules having the same number of valence electrons would be expected to have similar or homologous properties. In addition, such similar moieties should be able, in principle, to replace each other in more complex structures and nanocomposites. This is only partly true and only occurs under certain conditions which are investigated and reviewed here. When successful, these concepts are very powerful and transparent, leading to a large variety of nanomaterials based on Si and other group 14 elements, similar to well known and well studied analogous materials based on boron and carbon. Such nanomaterias designed in silico include, among many others, Si-C, Sn-Bi, Si-C and Ge-C clusters, rings, nanowheels, nanorodes, nanocages and multidecker sandwiches, as well as silicon planar rings and fullerenes similar to the analogous sp2 bonding carbon structures. It is shown that this pedagogically simple and transparent framework can lead to an endless variety of novel and functional nanomaterials with important potential applications in nanotechnology, nanomedicine and nanobiology. Some of the so called predicted structures have been already synthesized, not necessarily with the same rational and motivation. Finally, it is anticipated that such powerful and transparent rules and analogies, in addition to their predictive power, could also lead to far-reaching interpretations and a deeper understanding of already known results and information.

Espa?o Jurídico : Journal of Law , 2010,
Democracia. Separa o dos Poderes. Direitos Fundamentais.
