Pereira, Antonio Vander;Mittelmann, Andréa;Ledo, Francisco José da Silva;Souza Sobrinho, Fausto de;Auad, Alexander Machado;Oliveira, Jackson Silva e;
Ciência e Agrotecnologia , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-70542008000200034
Abstract: in the southeast region of brazil, the winter season is characterized by poor quality and low availability of the pastures. in that region the annual ryegrass is one of the most recommended winter forage to be used for dairy cattle diets. the objective of this study was to evaluate the behavior of ryegrass populations under the mata atlantica environment. from the 30 evaluated populations, 22 were collected and eight belong to embrapa's collection. a randomized blocks design with three replications was used, and seven cuts were done. plant height, percent and dry matter production, regrowth, days to flowering and seed production were recorded. for all these parameters there were differences between populations. total dry matter production varied from 3654 kg/ha (le 284) to 8544 kg/ha (cnpgl 164 population). the results showed that collected ryegrass populations have high potential for forage production and some of them can be recommended for southeast region during the winter season.
Meiotic and mitotic behaviour of B chromosomes of ryegrass
Techio, Vania Helena;Mittelmann, Andréa;Marció, Simone;Pereira, Ant?nio Vander;
Ciência Rural , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-84782009005000234
Abstract: mitotic and meiotic analyses using conventional and fluorescent stains were employed in plants (accession etbaz 055 - origin: cap?o do le?o, rio grande do sul state, brazil) from the germplasm active bank of ryegrass (banco ativo de germoplasma de azevém) of embrapa, for observing the behaviour of b chromosomes. in several meiotic stages, there were observed up to two b chromosomes, which have presented an unstable behaviour regarding their precocious ascension to metaphase i or delays during anaphase i. at the end of the process, the bs showed predominantly segregation for the nuclei under formation in order to guarantee their propagation. concerning the cells that comprise the anther tapetum and the root meristems, the b chromosomes have presented a more stable behaviour.
Sobre apariencia y realidad en Aristóteles: La interpretación de Marcelo Boeri
Mittelmann, Jorge;
Diánoia , 2009,
Abstract: in his recent work on the concepts of appearance and reality in ancient greek thought, marcelo boeri offers a detailed account of the role aristotle assigns to the phantasiai, both in our moral and cognitive assessments. in the light of this somewhat unitary account of moral and epistemic mistakes, this paper takes further some of boeri's suggestions, which seem to point in the direction of an inchoate aristotelian "criteriology". the virtuous person provides the "canon and measurement" of the morally trustworthy appearances; in much the same way, the joint exercise (and suitable training) of our sensory and intellectual discriminatory abilities assures the reliability of perceptible appearances. a brief account of the aristotelian "dissolution strategy" against radical skepticism closes this paper.
Alejandro y Aristóteles en torno de la causalidad motriz del alma
Mittelmann,Jorge;
Estudios de Filosofía , 2009,
Abstract: this essay holds that one of the most compelling challenges that a psychology which is peripatetic in inspiration must face is to keep the causal relevance of the soul within the three orders of physical change (movement, alteration, and growth) without turning the soul into an inner 'mover' that displaces the organism on account of being in contact with it. if this hindrance is not solved, such a psychology could not assert that the soul is both an unextense and impassive item, but (at best) a subtle body displacing another baser body. this paper suggests a combined reading of alexander's and aristotle's treatise on the soul for the sake of presenting alexander's strategy as a successful manner of facing that plain difficulty. according to mittelman, alexander would find in aristotle's 'dispositional states' the proper paradigm they satisfy a double condition, which neither the platonic forms nor the subtle bodies can satisfy: on the one hand, their incorporeal character does not make them (separate) substances, on the other hand, their inseparable character does not turn them into bodies displacing other bodies on account of being in touch with them. in this fashion, the aristotelian ?ξει? would gather all the explanatory advantages both of the platonic ε?δη and of the stoic πνε?μα, avoiding at the same time their own inconveniences.
Sobre apariencia y realidad en Aristóteles: La interpretación de Marcelo Boeri On Appearance and Reality in Aristotle: Marcelo Boeri's Interpretation
Jorge Mittelmann
High accuracy semidefinite programming bounds for kissing numbers
Hans D. Mittelmann,Frank Vallentin
Mathematics , 2009,
Abstract: The kissing number in n-dimensional Euclidean space is the maximal number of non-overlapping unit spheres which simultaneously can touch a central unit sphere. Bachoc and Vallentin developed a method to find upper bounds for the kissing number based on semidefinite programming. This paper is a report on high accuracy calculations of these upper bounds for n <= 24. The bound for n = 16 implies a conjecture of Conway and Sloane: There is no 16-dimensional periodic point set with average theta series 1 + 7680q^3 + 4320q^4 + 276480q^5 + 61440q^6 + ...

Ferreira, Reinaldo de Paula;Botrel, Milton de Andrade;Pereira, Antonio Vander;Cruz, Cosme Dami?o;
Pesquisa Agropecuária Brasileira , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-204X1999000600010
Abstract: the objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of 42 cultivars of alfalfa (medicago sativa l.) and to estimate the repeatability coefficient for dry matter production, leaf and stem protein content and disease tolerance features during the dry (april to september) and rainy (october to march) seasons with six cuts. dry matter yield and leaf protein content presented significant variation in both seasons, although stem protein content and tolerance to diseases were different only during the dry season. cultivars crioula and cibola had the best performance in most features. in general, the repeatability coefficient showed a low magnitude estimate (below 0,40). regarding dry matter production, the cultivars showed similar behavior in both seasons, with repeatability coefficient ranging from 0.3195 to 0.4270, genotypic determination around 65% and the possibility to predict the real value after seven to nine cuts.
Variáveis de acidez em fun??o da mineralogia da fra??o argila do solo

Revista Brasileira de Ciência do Solo , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-06832008000200010
Abstract: the soil acidity and associated variables are very important on soil management, especially at tropical and subtropical regions. in order to study some soil acidity variables and verify the influence of clay mineralogy on the relationship between ph and base saturation degree (v%), soil samples were collected from b and c horizons of different soil classes in paraná state: acric red-yellow latossol (lbw-1), dystric red-yellow latossol (lbw-2), dusky red latosol (lvdf), alumic cambisol (cxa) and dystric cambisol (chd). the clay fraction was studied by x-ray diffraction, thermal differential, thermal gravimetric and chemical analysis. soil samples were incubated for 60 days, after treatment with increasing calcium oxide rates, in order to reach determined degrees of base saturation (native, 25, 45, 60, 70, 125, and 150 %). then, the exchangeable base contents and ph in h2o and cacl2 0.01 mol l-1 were determined. results indicated the following clay mineralogy composition in the soils: smectite/vermiculite - cxa; fe oxide - lvdf, al oxide - lbw1; kaolinite with low contents of fe and al oxide - chd and lbw2. this diversity in clay mineralogy was important for the cacl2 ph with base saturation (v%) relationship. the curves show that this relationship is non-linear, meaning that buffer capacity varies in the evaluated ph range. a convex curve represents a more oxidic soil, while a concave curve represents a kaolinitic soil with 2:1 clay. the convex curve shape was result of the negative charge formation and preferential h+ dissociation at high ph (above ph 5), since fe-oh and al-oh act as weak acid (high pzc). the concave shape was attributed to the presence of permanent charges and high dissociation capacity of h+ at low ph (below ph 5), since the si-oh acts as strong acid (low pzc). for the same ph in cacl2 the following sequence of v % values were observed as a function of clay mineralogy: soil with predominance of fe and al oxide < soil with predominance of kaolinite

Abstract: The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of doses of organic matter and single superphosphate on the production of yellow passion fruit (Passiflora edulis Sims f. flavicarpa Deg) seedlings. An experiment was carried out in a screen nursery at 50% shading, at the Agricultural Production Sector , Universidade Estadual do Mato Grosso do Sul, Cassilandia (UUC), Brazil. Four doses of single superphosphate (0.0 kg.m-3; 2.5 kg.m-3; 5.0 kg.m-3; and 10.0 kg.m-3 of substratum), and three doses of organic matter (0%; 20%, and 40%) of the total volume of the substratum were tested. The organic matter was applied as poultry litter. A randomized block design with a 4 x 3 factorial scheme was used, with four replications and seven plants per plot. It was observed that the single superphosphate application at 7.7 kg.m-3 and 40% of organic matter per 1.0 m3 of substratum, provided more vigorous yellow passion fruit seedlings. KEY-WORDS: Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa; nutrition; propagation. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa; nutri o; propaga o.
Modals in Brazilian Advanced EFL Learners’ Compositions: A Corpus-Based Investigation1
Viana,Vander;
Profile Issues in Teachers` Professional Development , 2006,
Abstract: corpus linguistics has become a major trend in applied linguistics since the second half of the 20th century due to computing facilities. nowadays teachers can research and assess their students’ production by means of compiling learner corpora. this article describes how this technique was used to investigate the usage of modals in the writing of advanced efl learners studying at private language schools in brazil. when the research corpus is compared to the academic prose register studied by biber et al. (1999), the divergence becomes apparent. the findings, thus, suggest that subjects write in a non-proficient way, which runs counter to previous expectations.
