Straioto, Fabiana Gouveia;Ricomini Filho, Antonio Pedro;Fernandes Neto, Alfredo Júlio;Del Bel Cury, Altair Antoninha;
Brazilian Dental Journal , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-64402010000100009
Abstract: the addition of different polymers, such as polytetrafluorethylene (ptfe), to denture base resins could be an option to modify acrylic resin mechanical properties. this study evaluated the surface hardness, impact and flexural strength, flexural modulus and peak load of 2 acrylic resins, one subjected to a long and another subjected to a short polymerization cycle, which were prepared with or without the addition of 2% ptfe. four groups were formed according to the polymerization cycle and addition or not of ptfe. forty specimens were prepared for each test (10 per group) with the following dimensions: hardness (30 mm diameter x 5 mm thick), impact strength (50 x 6 x 4 mm) and flexural strength (64 x 10 x 3.3 mm) test. the results of the flexural strength test allowed calculating flexural modulus and peak of load values. all tests were performed in accordance with the iso 1567:1999 standard. data were analyzed statistically by anova and tukey's test with the level of significance set at 5%. no statistically significant differences (p>0.05) were found for surface hardness. flexural strength, impact strength and peak load were significantly higher (p<0.05) for resins without added ptfe. the flexural modulus of the acrylic resin with incorporated 2% ptfe polymerized by long cycle was significantly higher (p<0.05) than that of the other resins. within the limits of this study, it may be concluded that the addition of ptfe did not improve the mechanical properties of the evaluated acrylic resins.

Oliveira, Antonio Martins;Oliva Neto, Pedro de;
Brazilian Archives of Biology and Technology , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-89132011000500019
Abstract: the optimization of autolysis of saccharomyces cerevisiae from brewery was studied aiming at the maximum ribonucleic acid extraction and yeast extract production. the best conditions for yeast autolysis was 55.2oc, ph= 5.1 and 9.8% nacl for 24h of processing, without the nh3 use. in these conditions, the rna yield was 89.7%, resulting in 51.3% of dehydrated yeast extract with 57.9% protein. the use of 12.2% nh3 at 60oc after autolysis (8h) and plasmolysis (8h) was not viable due to the reduction in the rna yield from 89.7to78.4%. on the other hand, the thermal shock at 60oc for 15 minutes prior to autolysis provided an increase in the yield from 89.7 to 91.4%. the autolysis, including nacl plasmolysis in the optimized conditions was efficient, economic and with short time, thus usable for industrial purpose to obtain more valuable products such as yeast extract enriched in rna and/or protein, for different applications.

Outcrossing rate between 'Haden' and 'Tommy Atkins' mangoes estimated using microsatellite and AFLP markers
Santos, Carlos Antonio Fernandes;Lima Neto, Francisco Pinheiro;
Pesquisa Agropecuária Brasileira , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-204X2011000800016
Abstract: the objective of this work was to estimate outcrossing rates between haden and tommy atkins mango cultivars, using aflp and microsatellite markers. progenies of an isolated 'haden' plant, identified in a 'tommy atkins' commercial orchard, in petrolina, pe, brazil, were analyzed. total dna was isolated from the progeny leaves and used for aflp and microsatellite reactions. multilocus outcrossing rates (tm) were estimated by direct count of aflp or microsatellite markers and by the mltr software. outcrossing rates ranged from 0.85 to 0.87 with the analysis based on seven aflp markers, and from 0.83 to 0.91 based on three microsatellite primers. no unexpected band patterns were observed for 'haden' and 'tommy atkins'. the estimates obtained with the mltr software were close to those obtained by direct aflp and microsatellite allele counting, which indicates that the multilocus model was appropriate for this kind of study. the microsatellites mmicir005, mmicir030, and mmicir036 can be used to elucidate the origin of 'haden' and 'tommy atkins' seedlings.

International Journal of Clinical Medicine (IJCM) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ijcm.2014.512088

Objective: To demonstrate the feasibility of inguinal hernia repair with local anesthesia in an out-patient regime, with safety, efficacy and short learning curve. Methods: We prospectively evaluated 1186 patients undergoing inguinal hernia repair under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis between November 2004 and March 2014. Of the total number of hernias surgically treated in this period, 755 were operated on the right, 394 on the left and 37 bilateral. We used clinical, surgical and psychosocial criteria for inclusion in the procedure. The parameters for exclusion were complex, irreducible or recurrent hernia, obesity (BMI greater than 30 kg/m2), patient’s refusal and psychiatric disorder. All patients underwent elective surgery and were analyzed regarding surgical outcome, complications and hospital stay. Results: All operations were completed successfully. In no case there was a need to change the anesthetic method. Surgical time was similar to that conducted with other methods of anesthesia and there were no cases of adverse effects of local anesthetics. Intra-operative complications amounted to approximately 2.64%. There was no need for hospital admissions greater than 24 hours. Conclusion: The procedure is feasible and causes no perioperative significant pain, is safe, can be performed by residents under supervision, has satisfactory patient acceptance and complications similar to those observed in a conventional herniorrhaphy, allowing lower time and cost of hospitalization and faster access to treatment.

Melo, Pedro N.;Gimenes, Miriam;Oliveira Neto, Antonio;
Zoologia (Curitiba) , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1984-46702009000200002
Abstract: several studies have been conducted with bees of the subtribe euglossina using odor baits as attractants. the objective of this study was to analyze the daily activity pattern of visits by males of four species of eulaema - eulaema nigrita lepeletier, 1841, eulaema flavescens (friese, 1899), eulaema cingulata (fabricius, 1804) and eulaema bombiformis (packard, 1869) - to vanillin and benzyl acetate baits, and their relationship with climatic and environmental factors throughout the day in different months of the year in a tropical forest fragment in bahia. eulaema nigrita was the most frequent species on vanillin baits and e. flavescens was the most frequent species on benzyl acetate baits. the highest frequency of visits was observed in february and december. activities started between 5:00 and 9:00 h. in february and november, visits of e. nigrita to the bait were observed daily, following a bimodal pattern. the same activity pattern was observed for e. bombiformis in december. males of four species of eulaema occurred in all remaining months in a unimodal daily activity pattern, with a higher frequency before 9:30 h. the correlation between the visiting activity to odor baits and climatic factors was low. this result can be due to bee flight activity occurring within a range of adequate climatic variation, particularly temperature, which in our study ranged from 23 to 32oc. daily activity patterns of euglossina males on odor baits can represent patterns of flower fragrance collection under natural conditions, with visits usually at the time of highest production.
